Live Poll: The Many Faces of Belmondo (R.I.P)

As they say in French, a 'sacred monster' left us...

He was one of the last embodiments of a certain idea of French masculinity... his charisma was effortless, his charm incomparable, his over-the-top tirades irresistible, his big smile infectious and his love interests beautifully cast...

Over the span of his sixty-year career, he threw punches like he meant business, delivered one-liners with that delightful French 'tchatche', he also played a few serious characters but never took himself too seriously... and he always insisted on doing his own stunts.

Quentin Tarantino called him "the coolest man" but for French audiences, he was the 'perfect pal', even his rival (and friend) Alain Delon admitted that his edge on him was that 'joie de vivre' that made him so accessible, badass without being too intimidating, sexy without looking too perfect.

The great JEAN-PAUL BELMONDO died today, September 6, and as a modest tribute to his talent, here are 15 pictures from some of his most famous movies. Which one is your favorite?

I haven't seen enough of his films. For now, my vote goes to his role in Breathless.

Oh, you just have to vote for his coolest-looking picture, I don't expect many users to have seen more than 2 or 3 films with him...

@Breumaster

Welcome.

But did IMDb announce his death? I looked for the news on the front page but couldn't find it...

No. 3 is beautiful.

Belmondo is one of the rare actors whose death caused me to immediately contact my father to share the news.

I didn't know he insisted on doing his own stunts. Makes him even cooler. The comparison to Delon is inevitable although there seems to be no face-off poll between the two yet - maybe I'll get around doing that one as another tribute. (And as a private tribute, I'll make haste to finally see L'Aîne des Ferchaux)

He went a bit too far with the stunts, many times he could have broken his neck but yeah, he was the same devil-may-care easygoing guy in real life as he was in the movies, which brings a certain amount of sincerity in his roles.

Delon is known for his big ego but he was certainly Belmondo's biggest fan, he knew he could never garner the same amount of sympathy as "Bebel", Delon had the cold beauty that made him look inaccessible, Belmondo was the pal, the mentor, the reliable figure...

I think a little Melville marathon is overdue, still have a few films to watch from this great director and two of them feature Bébel...
