Live Poll: Scenes or Sequences Where Characters Accept Their Death

Intro:

In some movies characters agree to be killed or kill themselves because of his/her/* reasons, which force them to do so. No matter which kind of reason it is, the death is free chosen at the end. To make sequences like these authentically, it needs quiet good acting.

Which of these sequences was done best by all involved actors? (The descriptions are covered with spoiler bars for not spoiling you.)

Discuss here.

If you think of suicide, please find medical help. Live is too short to waste.

Suggestions:

Characters like in my examples that make clear it's ok to die here and now. Movies, no tv-series. Animated ok, no documentations. No real-life, just fictitious caracters. No plain self-murderers, they must be forced by circumstances like being hunt, or irreversible and painful deseases like cancer or war injuries. Something that puts them into a place they can't quit. Please give me an IMDb-Link to the movie, to the character and a description for the option. Better not below a rating of 6/10. In special cases I do amens to that.

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls088354198/

Poll: TBD

Changed the title to make it more versatile for suggestions.

I think it looks good, just needs some more options. I'm aiming for 25, but I think 20 would be good enough.

It seems there are no more suggestions. I would say this one is ready to go.

Still open about typos or grammar, formulation - thing like that.

Thank you, very good suggestions. I've put them on the list. If someone else has suggestions, I'm still open, also for typos and edits.  25 is the limit for this list. If no one else suggests, it's ready to go. 19 is also a good number.

FYC:

Aliens: Mortally injured Private Vasquez and Lieutenant Gorman sacrifice themselves while taking out a few xenomorphs and slowing down others rather than be captured by the Xenomorphs for impregnation.

Black Panther: Wounded Erik Killmonger would rather die than live the remainder of his life locked up in a Wakandan prison.

The sacrifice of Gorman and Vasquez is an excellent example of what my idea is about. So I've put it on the list. Thank you.

Erik's death is also on the list. T'Challa offered him to help him. On this aspect, his situation wasn't really inevitable deadly. But it wasn't clear, if the Wakandians can save his live, so I take it. It is still better than the example in 'Awake'. I've put 'Awake' off the list for 25 options.

Ok, 25 options reached. I keep it for 25 options, that's far enough facing the fact that this poll is much to read for the users. I only take suggestions, if they are definitely much better than other options on the list.

If there are no thing like typo's or edits for better formulation, I would say it's ready to go.

Hi, Otter. I saw that movies a few years ago, but must admit that I'm not so into it and don't remember the circumstaces proper. I know about Dumbledore sacrificed himself for Harry. Can you tell me little about it to refresh my memory? I know it's a big franchise and has a pretty heavy meaning for many people, so I surely won't ignore it. But there are still many other good examples on the list and I want to keep it to 25 options. I think 25 options is a good count, specially when there is much to read for the users. Thank you for the suggestion, anyway.

Dumbledore had been injured destroying a horcrux. Snape told him the curse would spread from his hand and eventually kill him.

Dumbledore knew Voldemort had assigned his assassination to Draco Malfoy, but wanted Snape to kill him if Draco failed.

Just before Snape kills Dumbledore, Dumbledore looks at Snape and says "Severus, please."

Thank you, riverotter.

I think I slightly remember. I've put your suggestion on the list and deleted "187" instead.

FYC: In Johnny Got his Gun, Joe Bonham is severely injured in WWI. He has lost his eyes, ears, nose, mouth, arms, and legs. Doctors think he is brain dead, but keep his body alive for scientific/medical purposes. Towards the end of the movie, he uses his head to bang out morse code on his pillow to say "Kill me" over and over.

That's an awfully bad story. This guy's begging is totally understandable. I'll short the text a little, but I will put it there instead of 'Armageddon'. Thank you for suggesting.

I tried to shorten it, but it doesn't read good. I think you did your best to keep it short. Thank you.

Hi, riverotter.

I just saw the movie to know what I'm talking about and I was tied to the screen. It's a great movie in it's own way. When I look at it and resume the time it was made, there were seldom movies that show up what it means to be invalid in such a clear and empathic way. It is one of the best movies on the list and may get my vote. A very excellent example! And the criteria are clearly fulfilled.

Thank you for correcting. :)

#12: expect, accidentally wrote except. So accept would be wrong, too. Sorry for that. My bad. He didn't expect, they planned to kill him.

#20: Copy and paste-error.

All done.

Please tone down the references to suicide. You can make a poll about movie characters without referring to real people considering suicide.

I think it is more triggering than helpful. But please feel free to reference the law you mention.

If the content of the poll makes you feel that a suicide warning is necessary, please change the content of the poll.

Good intention, but I think you are right. I thought on Americas justice, where people sue companies for drying (and killing) their poodle in the microwave. But maybe that's just a prejudice of me. I deleted the line. Ready, if there are no more corrections.

Also:

the death is freely chosen

it needs quiet good acting (I think you mean "quite good", but it's really better without it)

Hi Breu,

May I suggest a few edits? (in bold below)

Title: Characters Who Accept Their Deaths or Even Beg To Be Killed

Quote: "... Good poll, btw! : )"

There were many people helping with good suggestions and corrections. I'm glad about that.

Mostly a poll is made from the activity of many people.  I just claim the idea. This one seems to be unique, even though there may be similar suggestions in the past done by other users. I got several elements to build a suggestion. This one is about a very special kind of situation, mostly shown in drama-, anti war-, or crime movies. I thought that these sequences are mostly pretty strong emotional sequences. So many people will remember them.

I was reading the thread between Peter and Ravi and I think that both of their suggestions could be used and balanced. I think that the revised intro, according to Peter's suggestions, is better but I think Ravi made a really good suggestion about adding a line like ""If you are considering suicide, please seek medical help."

You could even add a link; perhaps something like this at the end of the intro would work:

"If you are considering suicide, please seek medical help or call a crisis hotline: click here for hotlines that can help."
