Live Poll: Scariest Found Footage Horror Movie

Found Footage Horror movies are a sub-genre of movies, based on the discovery of a lost film, videotape or digital mini-cam recording and it's mysterious contents. The found footage is either presented as raw and complete or the original footage is edited interlaced with a narrative element by those who found it. However, sometimes the footage was not lost but is simply recorded footage shot by the movie's characters for a variety of reasons.

Which horror film makes best use of the found footage technique and incorporates it's footage into the final movie for the scariest effect?
* limit one movie per franchise with sequels noted, plot devices used to insert the found footage and the extent it is used varies

The list is not public! I have some FYC that were likely not featured, but I can't be sure before the list goes live.

You missed 'Willow Creek'.

I saw the movie and it was purposefully omitted. While, I found it interesting, it was really in the next tier of movies below the cut line. The three strikes against for making the cut were the low viewership (most on the poll had at least 20k IMDb votes), its IMDb rating (5.1 IMDb rated) and a minimal box office take. Those coupled with creative incorporation of the found footage and scariness of the film were the big factors in determining the movies that were listed as answer options. While, a movie could conceivably overcome one or two of these drawbacks, it hard to overcome three. Thanks for the suggestion, I DO AGREE it should have been in the conversation and be at least listed on the honorable mention section.

It's good to see a classic Peeping Tom (1960) there. It is not entirely found footage or slasher, but is pivotal for both genres and is an overall masterpiece. Moreover, if it is featured then some of my FYC are not deprived of a solid chance.

FYC:
Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1992) begins as a dark comedy but soon transforms into a snowball of drama and very genuinely felt horror of how depraved a world could be. Arguably it leaves a more lasting impression then Cannibal Holocaust which is an achievement in itself. Also happens to be one of my all-time favorite movies.

This House Has People in It (2016) - even if shorts are not eligible, this one might be an exception to make the cut: firstly it actually has a whole hidden layer of footage which is hidden online and overall fairs more then an hour. Secondly, in my humble opinion it is a modern masterpiece and is a prime example that found footage genre, if done right and/or inventive enough, is far from tired. It certainly changed my perspective on genre, I can tell you that. If you haven't seen it, it is officially available on YouTube (although aired originally on Adult Swim) and is highly recommended. Alan Resnick and the whole AB Video Solutions/Wham City Comedy group are names to look out: they already have cult following, but one day they will definitely hit it so big, residual ringing will be everywhere.

I was on the fence about both Peeping Tom (1960) and Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1992). I haven't seem either and opted to remove Man Bites Dog from the list. I wanted to allow for creative and non-traditional uses of the found footage to achieve the desired effect, but didn't want to go outside of what could justifiably labeled, Found Footage Horror. I liked how The Shallows (2016) used the found footage technique as it was being shot rather than after to increase plot suspense. I added Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1992) back in based on your support that it belongs. I will check out This House Has People in It (2016)

I  checked out This House Has People in It (2016) and I don't see it as good fit for the answer pool, likewise I removed Man Bites Dog (C'est arrivé près de chez vous) (1992) for its fit in the Horror genre.

urbanemovies,

Your poll is on the IMDb Home Page. It's effectively IMDb's "Official" Halloween 2018 Poll.

Not really found footage in the conventional sense, but the original Japanese version of The Ring still creeps me out.
