i would have to say 'star wars' simply because it was the first to make us really consider the 'trilogy' as a regularity...before that, 'sequels' were mostly looked upon as always inferior...

however, i'm curious that you left out the james bond franchise, the only one truly given history, continuity, and gravitas, without being a single storyline, but a thread, holding the entire canon of films together...

Of course they avoid comic book franchises.  Stuck up and lame.  Comic book writers and artists are more brilliant that some of the directors, movie writers and original story writers from list above.

I choose The Lord of the Rings.
