LIVE POLL: Oscars Face-Off: Producers - Spielberg vs Rudin vs Kennedy

In January 2023, Steven Spielberg bested himself in the Oscar Best Picture category by securing a record twelfth lifetime producing nomination for his latest film, The Fabelmans (2022). The Best Picture category is the de facto Oscar category for recognizing producers. Oscar-nominated producers, Scott Rudin and Kathleen Kennedy know how to marshal the right mix of talent and resources to make the Oscar-caliber movies too and are part of the same elite producing tier that Spielberg leads. But, the two trailing producers are younger and time might favor them in their quest to surpass him for the all-time record.

You might be right, Spielberg (114) has about thirty more productions on his resume and a more saleable and recognizable name in the business. Kennedy's (85) resume is impressive too and is one of the most well known producers in Hollywood and is the lead producer on all the Star Wars final trilogy and stand-alone movies. Muddling the issue is that were long time collaborators, so their resumes are as much the same as different. It should be closer than it probably will be.

Unfortunately, people tend not to like to read and also tend to vote on name-recognition alone., so Spielberg would probably win by a landslide. Otherwise, it would probably be very close.

I agree with you on how people tend to vote. On past credentials alone, I think Spielberg wins. But I thought her succeeding George Lucas as the head of LucasFilm for Disney might sway some votes. As she will be the executive producer of the highest grossing film each year for the foreseeable future with a Star Wars installment coming out every year. Her box office hits' like the last three Star Wars movies might close the gap in a close race.

I meant "produced"... Spielberg didn't direct them, but you see it's an interesting slip of tongue because as a kid, I thought he was directing these films, since his name was the first to pop out lol. No I really meant producer.

Regardless, I could see how it could be misinterpreted. Maybe, I should change it to be more specific? Plus, the question is an Oscar Face-Off, so it should relate back to an Oscar tie-in. The two jobs although related are different skill sets to some degree.

I would base it on their entire producing repertoire, that is why I included the producing only hyperlinks to make an informed decision.The Oscar-nominated lists are posted for informational reasons and as career highlights for those who don't want to bother considering their entire producing filmography. Ultimately, it is up to the poll taker what they base their choice on.

Allegations of abusive behavior[edit]

Rudin is widely considered to be one of the most abusive bosses in the entertainment industry.[43] He has been called "Hollywood's biggest a-hole" (the New York Post's "Page Six"),[44] "the most feared man in town" (The Hollywood Reporter),[12] and notoriously hot-tempered.[45] Rudin acknowledged having "a temper" in a 2008 interview, but said he has "grown up".[46] Hugh Wilson admitted in a 2015 interview that he had negative experiences working with Rudin during the making of The First Wives Club.[47]

On April 7, 2021, Rudin was accused, by numerous employees speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, of demonstrating a long-standing pattern of abusive behavior towards his employees, including physical abuse, such as throwing objects at his assistants, and in one instance breaking an assistant's hand with a computer monitor.[6] In that article, he was also accused of having victims sign non-disparagement agreements and having the victims' film credits increased or retroactively decreased after quitting.[6]

On April 14, 2021, Karen Olivo announced that they would not return to Moulin Rouge! once it reopens in protest of the industry's silence on the allegations against Rudin. In an Instagram video, Olivo stated, "I want a theatre industry that matches my integrity."[48] As a result of the allegations, Sutton Foster, who was slated to star alongside Hugh Jackman in Rudin's upcoming Broadway production of The Music Man, reportedly vowed to leave the show if Rudin did not "take a seat".[49] On April 17, 2021, the Actors' Equity Association called on Rudin to release employees from any ongoing nondisclosure agreements and for actions from employers, in order to create "truly safe and harassment-free theatrical workplaces on Broadway and beyond."[50] Members of the union have pushed for Rudin to be added to a Do Not Work list.[51]

On April 17, Rudin released a statement apologizing for "the pain my behavior caused to individuals, directly and indirectly" and said he would "step back" from active work on his Broadway productions.[52] On April 20, he announced he would do the same for his "film and streaming" projects.[8]

On August 13, it was reported that Rudin was no longer an executive producer for the upcoming third season of the What We Do in the Shadows.[53] This was confirmed when the first episode premiered and his name was not listed in the credits.

In a September 2021 interview with Vanity Fair, Aaron Sorkin was asked about Rudin being fired from To Kill a Mockingbird, after an 18-month hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and said, "I think Scott got what he deserves."[54]

@Tsarstepan Thanks, I think is important to disclose. It seems like it is a well-known fact within the industry. Yet, I wasn't aware of it.

I think of the three, he inserted himself into the conversion with his track record over the past two decades, while Spielberg and Kennedy accrued most of their noms some time ago. His forced pull back will likely impact his ability to add to his totals.

I hate to say it, but his success is probably the reason his behavior was tolerated or why people choose to work with him, knowing in advance his reputation.

Spielberg seems like a shoo-in to extend his nomination lead over the others again in 2023 with an almost certain Oscar Best Picture nomination next week for The Fabelmans (2022).
