A few weeks ago, coincidentally during National Poetry Month (April) in the United States, a film about poet Emily Dickinson, 'A Quiet Passion', was released. (The famous Emily Dickinson is widely considered to be one of the best, and most influential, poets ever.)

Imagine that you are stranded on an island, literal or, because we're talking about poetry, metaphorical, and you are given only two representatives of the arts and entertainment: one poem by Emily Dickinson and one film. being a poet myself, i so appreciated your passionate connection to a story and a simple verse...

and it is so hard to choose, but...i have to say the one that truly struck me (along with the photo chosen), was american beauty 'in this short life'...

Ok, first I realized that we have similar taste in music, via Jen's "what are you listening to?" thread. Then that we both love the movie, The Paper. Now... you're a poet, too! I should have guessed, lol.

By the way, IMDb is keeping me sane this weekend as I cram to meet a submission deadline, which I do all too often -- the cramming part, I mean. I don't do the submitting thing often enough.

The deadline, which is tomorrow, is for the Agnes Lynch Starret First Book Award from the University of Pittsburgh Press. The manuscript I'm submitting has been complete for almost three years but I'm going through it with a fine-tooth comb and debating whether or not to make any more of several ideas for small revisions. I'm also submitting individual poems (well, you know, groups of three - five) to some literary journals that accept submission only through tomorrow until they open again in the late summer. I usually find submitting to be tedious and boring. (Yawn.) 'Good thing so many of them have deadlines or I'd procrastinate forever, 'you know? :-)

i feel your passionate apathy...but...as you know, it's not something you can rush...

these things come in spurts...you stare at a blank page, then the next thing you know, you can't stop till it's four a.m. and you've run out of paper and the ribbon on your typewriter looks like a pasta dish you ate the night before...

i never personally thought about writing actual 'books' myself, though my whole life has been songwriting, poetry, and the like...but now, 28 published books later (both poetry and novels), and i'm still trying to figure out how (and why) it happened...

I like the concept behind your poll suggestion. I will have to review and think about Emily Dickenson's before I can offer any suggestion.

That reminds me: for "Because I could not stop for death," I'm not sure what movie to use. I was thinking maybe Edge of Tomorrow, which I didn't see so I might be totally off there, or maybe In Bruges, but nothing's really clicking.

ElMo, did you write that? It's lovely! One of several impressive things is its meter. I don't write meter well at all.

I've never seen Children of Paradise, which is embarrassing for a few reasons, including that it's poetic realism cinema. It's on my "to see" list and, after seeing your post, I moved it up.

Well, I didn't pay much attention to the meters, maybe I have a natural ear for it because I love poetry (though I exclusively write in French language)

But you should really watch the film, it's the French "Gone With the Wind", and contains some of the finest lines of dialogues you'll ever hear (it was Oscar-nominated for Best Screenplay). One of my favorite is:

"Not only you're rich, but you want to be loved like a poor"
