Nice pick Peter, thanks for the vote!

I feel like the problem here is that his other two films are both better.  It isn't that it isn't a great film or isn't comparable to the other films in merit, I just don't see it as a one hit wonder.

I vehemently protest Michael Curtiz being on this list.

And I question these:
Michael Gondry
The Wachowskis
Neill Blomkamp
John Singleton

FYC:
Rawson Marshall Thurber - Dodgeball

You're right about Curtiz; I have since removed him.

But the other ones, in my opinion, I really couldn't justify removing. Looking at each of their respective filmographies, in terms of iconic stature and 'masterpiece status', none of their other films have even come close to:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) - (Gondry)

The Matrix (1999) - (The Wachowskis)

District 9 (2009) - (Blomkamp)

Boyz n the Hood (1991) - (Singleton)

With respect to Thurber, I consider We're the Millers (2013) to be as popular and successful a film as Dodgeball. I'm not sure about adding him.

As I tried to explain to Deshpande above, by no means am I saying the other films of these directors are bad or even mediocre. The point is to emphasize the 'hit' part of the title, where hit means "classic" or "masterpiece". And IMO, these directors were hard-pressed to match the success of those films with their others. In fact, when I think of these directors, these films all immediately come to mind as their best and most accomplished piece of work and make it difficult to immediately think of their others. That's how I'm trying to devise this poll.

I would agree, one-hit wonder implies that you had a flash of genius and never did anything else or had anything close. A couple of these directors had decent careers or films that I would call great, but not exceptional. I would question how you define hit, the list seems very suspect.

V for Vendetta and  The Lives of Others

Thanks for the feed back Jess!

I actually change the entire intro now altogether. Hopefully it works a little better now.

List Parameters UPATE:

I have added the following parameter in this list to clarify further a distinction between what is and isn't a 'wonder' of a film:

[...] Films must also have a minimum 7.4 rating.

For me definitely The Lives of Others.
One a the very few really good german movies. At least from the year 2000+.

Thanks for the vote Hyker! The Lives of Others was indeed a fantastic film - would love to see more like it in the future...

I've seen exactly half, and would either vote Night of the Hunter or Empire Strikes Back.

Great picks. I think those two are the most impressive given their situations (NOTH being Laughton's only film, and a film-noir masterpiece that was while Empire was a juggernaut of a film for Keshner and was almost the archetype for the 'one-hit wonder' I'm going for here.)

Thanks for the votes.

Kyle, To say that Jacques Becker is a ONE-HIT WONDER is blasphemy ! Here is a GREAT French director with a filmography that can put many American directors to shame. I understand that LE TROU is about the only one recently released in the USA but that is not my problem. I live in Canada, precisely in the Province of Québec where all his films were shown in theatres, Cinémathèque and television... I also saw them in Paris where they were filmed. A great director with many ARTISTIC HITS and COMMERCIAL HITS ! Discover him with imdb's list and see the other films of his.

'Fun poll. I disagree with John Singleton but I can see how his inclusion could make sense but I can't see the rational for Shyamalan, except for that he made a lot of disappointing films after seeming to be so promising. He has not, however, had only one hit: 'Unbreakable' has almost 280,000 votes and a 7.2 rating, and 'Split' has a 7.3 rating with over 210,000 votes. (Both films also have positive Metacritic scores.) With a minimum rating for a film's inclusion at 7.4, he has two other movies that are just a hair below the ratings of some of the movies on this list and with more votes. I'm not a big fan of his or anything but he just doesn't seem to fit for any reason other than that he's prolific and his first film is considered to be such a masterpiece that a lot of later films were disappointing compared to The Sixth Sense. He's actually had at least six films that could be considered to be "hits" in terms of IMDb ratings, box office results, critical reception, general audience reception, etc.

Of course, that's what makes lists fun: a lot of discussion and debate. :)

Thanks Ruby! I think it was a good idea but I too am struggling to determine the parameters - do you think any changes should be made to exclude/include anyone? I'm so unsure with this one ...

M. Night Shyamalan.isn't a one hit wonder by any stretch.
Signs (2002) and his recent The Visit and Split.  Both movies were produced for less than $10m each and were pretty successful box office wise.
