Live Poll: Most Hated Movie on IMDb

IMDB's movie ratings are weighted averages of the votes given by individual users. It gives a fair view of the true rating of a movie (*).

Only 17 movies on IMDb have received the lowest rating of 1/10 from more than 20,000 voters (**). Although their weighted average rating may still be high, they are in a way the most hated movies on IMDb (***) .

Which movie in this list deserves this title most?

List: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls025806694/
Poll: http://www.imdb.com/poll/ZL4PlP4tQ6w/

(*) Various filters are applied to the raw data in order to eliminate and reduce attempts at 'vote stuffing'.
(**) People might give the lowest score to a movie for various reasons: for example because they dislike its current popularity, because they disagree with a movie's moral values or because they believe the movie is just plain bad.
(***) Fictional movies. Movies with controversial (political) content excluded.

A "1" rating doesn't mean that the movie is hated, it just means that some fanboys are pushing it down so their favorite movie can get higher on the rating, that's why both "The Godfather" and "The Dark Knight" are supposedly 'hated', I wouldn't be surprised if more than 80% of these 'hate' votes were done in 2008 when the face of IMDb Top 5 movies was changed forever.

So maybe you should add a parameter of "love" in your "hating" criteria. If there are more users who voted it a 10 than 1, I don't think we can consider that a movie is hated.

If you want to make it more complex, pick all the votes from 1 to 4 and the votes from 7 to 10, if the first category has more users then the movie is eligible.

Now, I know that even popular classics have their share of detractors, there's a guy who loathes "The Godfather" and will probably jump at my post saying that I'm just sad because my 'darling' is on the list, but you can't really have indisputable classics listed among movies that are clearly unpopular. In the best case, the classics are 'divisive' but not 'hated'.

You're absolutely right about the dubious reasons why some users give a "1" to a popular movie, ElMo. That's why I included the footnote (**).

However a poll with just the lowest rated movies doesn't make any sense. There are lots of crappy B-movies that fully deserve their low rating. There needs to be an element of volume as well , like "lowest rated movies with at least 20,000 votes" or something similar. I tried this but it gives a strange result. Most of the movies which fall in this category are completely unknown to most people. That's why I came up with the idea of movies that collected the most "1" ratings, even if it's an extremely popular one that's generally accepted as a masterpiece by most film lovers.

But I'm open to all suggestions on how this poll could be finetuned, so thanks for your comments.

No problem, I was just making a point, not THE point :)

That said, The Godfather, The Dark Knight or Pulp Fiction belong to that breed of classics where when they're hated, they're really hated.

Some classics seem immune to hatred like Singin' in the Rain or Back to the Future. That's why they're more than popular, they're 'beloved'

While that is what happened, I think the "1/10" ratings are, at least somewhat, honest. Dark Knight fans decided to rock the ship, and they succeeded, and continue to "hate" Godfather to bolster their love of Dark Knight. It's stupid, but so are some people. I never bother to throw a fit over an IMDb ranking, but I'm not everyone. So long as I can love Good Bad Weird the most, I won't throw a fit, even with it off the IMDb top 250. It's not my list, so it's rather pointless for me to get mad at it.

"There are lots of crappy B-movies that fully deserve their low rating."

I don't get it. I never hated B-movies. Low-budget or not, they often feature tour de force performances by underrated actors, have clever scripts, witty dialogue, and great soundtracks.

It is usually the overblown A-movies, cheesy dramas, and Oscar-bait cookie-cutter drivel which annoy me. Their premises lack in originality, they employ overused tropes, the scripts have enough plot holes to serve as parking spaces, their dialogues are laughable, and soundtracks are at best forgettable. And yet they never fail to win one award or the other. Honestly, I lost faith in awards as a teenager and don't considered them a measure of quality. More of industry-related politics.

The Godfather "1" ratings was done by rabid Dark Knight fanboys who campaigned to get it to the No.1 spot. I've read about it a lot on the IMDb boards. It doesn't belong on such a list

As for my choice here,Fifty shades of grey

Thanks for the vote. I agree it is difficult to hate a movie like "The Godfather", but on the other hand it proves that some people just don't like one movie's popularity because they would like to see another movie on the top spot.

"it is difficult to hate a movie like "The Godfather" "

Personally I love the film, and both of its sequels. But I have come across several negative reviews, by people who feel that it glorifies violence and organized crime. Personally one of the things that I like is that it gave the standards of the (by then defunct) Motion Picture Code the proverbial finger.

Note that I first watched the original film when 13-years-old, because I had a friend with a big video tape collection who tried to collect any film remotely connected to Robert DeNiro (his favorite actor) and Al Pacino (the runner up). I have fond memories of it, and viewing it as an adult it still satisfies me,

While I don't typically like gangster films, except for Korean ones, I'd have to vote for Fantastic Four. There's hardly anything good about this movie, except a few bits. I actually don't mind the Twilight movies, and I'm surprised to see the Lord of the Rings films here.

You are surprised to see people who hate fantasy films? You must not read many reviews. Many people feel that fantasy, science fiction, and horror are "frivolous" or "inferior genres, good only for "escapism".

I don't share the mentality, these are my favorite genres, but it is common place.

As for "Twilight", I am rather indifferent. I typically love vampire films, but I was not impressed with the premise of the series. The acting was decent, but the script was not my cup of tea. I don't get why people loved it, and I don't get why they hated it.

Of the movies on the list that I've seen, Titanic. I thought it was pretty bad. 'Great poll.

Why? Great spectacle and visuals, a script that humanizes the victims of the tragedy (people rather than statistics), decent acting, great soundtrack. It could a few more shades of grey in characterization, but otherwise great.

A film that tried to do the same with another tragedy was "Pearl Harbor" (2001), but this time the characters were flat and anachronisms much more obvious. I felt it was much inferior to "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (1970).
