In 2024, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) celebrates the 100th anniversary of its founding on April 17, 1924. MGM was formed by combining three existing studios: Metro Pictures, Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures into one major studio. Louis B. Mayer was tapped to lead the newly formed MGM, with 24-year-old wunderkind Irving Thalberg appointed as its head of production. This information differs from what is posted elsewhere. But, I would suppose MGM largely financed the production and after its initial release the other co-production companies fully tranfered their stake and rights in the movie and franchise to MGM. The entire Stargate media franchise, including the SG-1 TV series has been owned by MGM for nearly thirty years. The three other co-production companies were playing the short game and were in it for the profits from the initial release.
