I have such a strong feeling that this has been done, but I can't find anything. My stupid brain... I suggest you take out some of these categories - there are just far too many to squeeze down into 35 options. Or make it multiple films. I mean, you could make one with just the fine artists... I'm thinking maybe cut out actresses and musicians, since those have had tons of polls about them.

Jen, I think you are talking about this poll: Portraying the author - http://www.imdb.com/poll/1IzwZp-ZoJI/ There is too much difference between the two polls. Benu's poll is highlighting only the women characters, plus the existing poll is about only Authors.

No, that is not what I was referring to. But I *do* feel that movies about actresses and musicians have been covered many times over.

Thanks, Jen. I would agree with both your observations. There seem to be twice as many choices in the Artist segment than any other Women's History segment (Leaders, Trailblazers, Humanitarian, or Athletes). As a result, the Artist category could be further split and certain aspects have been already covered in other polls, due to popularity of this type of biopic. I am still refining the answer list and would like to see where the boundaries should be based on a final number and mix of biopics. I am still open to modifying it. However, I think I can best address your concerns by leaving the scope and boundaries as is for the following reasons. 1. The question is about inspirational women and their stories from within the context of Women's History and being female. While how talented they were still comes into play still, How much they were trailblazers for other women or the additional hardships they had endure to prove themselves does too. I think this implied context adds a new twist on the topic. While you may have a favorite artist, and another that you think was the most talented. You may have a third different answer for the one who had to overcome the most or did more to advance the women's movement. 2. Answer options list will be more of a Best of List with likely five or so artists from each sub-segment: Writers, Actresses, Singers, Musicians, Painters, Dancers, Entertainers, Etc. So, I don't think a handful of actresses will make it feel like another actress poll. Both, because of the limited overlap and because on most polls women are generally lucky to represented in 20% of the answer options on any given poll anyways. 3. The cross comparison with other types of artists gives a unique feel to this poll suggestion. Comparing actresses vs. sculptors, singers vs. writers, and musicians vs. painters on a common factor is unique. It is hard to usually compare these very different talents. It is however much easier when done within the context of inspirational women, their stories and their impact on the women's movement or in general. 4. I don't want to double the emphasis on artists by splitting it and creating two polls just because there are more viable options. I think it sends the wrong implied message as this an area women can succeed in, but the other areas they not as likely too. Keeping the Artists on equal footing with Leaders,Trailblazers, Humanitarians, Athletes, I think sends the right implied message. 5. In the end, I think even this poll had the same twenty-five answer options as another poll, the completely different context of the topic changes everything. I think most poll takers will look at it as a women's history poll first, a female poll second and an artist poll third. If they look at as actress or musician poll at all, it will be much further down the list.

I always do women't history month polls, in addition to women-centered polls at other times of the year, but mine have been a bit different.

FYC: Camille Claudel (1988) Sylvia (2003) (I think any list of important, influential artists, especially women artists, has to include poet Sylvia Plath, considered to be one of the best English-language poets ever, as well as being important to fields such as women's studies, feminist studies, and social and clinical psychology. 'Changed the face of 20th Century poetry, as well as writing one of the most infuential American novels.) I'm not sure that Hours could be considered a biopic, but if so, Virginia Woolfe was hugely important to literature and the culture at large. Bravo, again, for doing this series of polls. 'Especially great for Women's History Month.

FYC: A Quiet Passion (2017) (about arguably the most important American poet, Emily Dickinson) Maudie (2017) (about Canadian painter, Maud Lewis) Camille Claudel (1988) (about French sculptor) Sylvia (2003) (Canonical American poet, who also wrote a seminal feminist novel, Sylvia Plath; I wrote a bit about her a few posts above) I would definitely take 'Lovelace' and 'Gia' off the list: The last thing women't history month aims to do is to further encourage the objectification of women. Even if the films don't objectify them, and I certainly think 'Gia' did not, the industries which made them famous certainly did and I don't see how their careers could fit into the category of artists.

Ruby, Thanks for the suggestions. I added your suggestions I now have 64 female ARTISTS biopics and counting that include Novelist, Writers, Poets, Journalists, Singers, Musicians, Stage Entertainers, Actresses, Comediennes, Dancers, Painters, Sculptors, Photographers, other Fine Artists, Culinary Artists Etc. http://www.imdb.com/list/ls064675403/ I thinks category is best served by grouping like artists together to get fifteen or so solid options and doing separate poll suggestion for each. If you or anyone else have interest in further developing one of these or the whole category for Woman's History Month, please let me know. Novelist, Writers, Poets, Journalists, Singers, Musicians, Stage Entertainers, Dancers, Etc. Actresses, Comediennes Painters, Sculptors, Photographers, Other Fine Artists

Performing arts are a form of art in which artists use their voices, bodies or inanimate objects to convey artistic expression. It is different from visual arts, which is when artists use paint, canvas or various materials to create physical or static art objects. Performing arts include a range of disciplines which are performed in front of a live audience.WRITERS (split off from ARTISTS) Authors, Non-Fiction Writers, Novelists, Poets, Journalists, Screenwriters, Biographers, Editors, Etc.See the COMPANION partial list of inspirational female writers and their MOVIE BIOPICS list here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls046118223/SINGERS/MUSICIANS (split off from ARTISTS) Singers, Musicians, Composers, Songwriters, Promoters, Etc.See the COMPANION partial list of inspirational female musically-inclined artists and their MOVIE BIOPICS list here:https://www.imdb.com/list/ls046931868/VISUAL ARTISTS (stub off from ARTISTS) Painters, Sculptors, Architects, Photographers, Filmmakers, Culinary Artists, Fashion Designers, Etc.See the COMPANION partial list of inspirational female visual artists and their MOVIE BIOPICS list here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls064675403/PERFORMERS (split off from ARTISTS) Actresses, Dancers, Comedians, Circus Performers, Vaudeville/Theater Performers, Models, Entertainers, Etc.See the COMPANION partial list of inspirational female performing artists and their MOVIE BIOPICS list here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls046955352/

I narrowed the focus of this poll suggestion to visual artists of all types. The visual arts are art forms such as ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, filmmaking, and architecture. Many artistic disciplines (performing arts, conceptual art, textile arts) involve aspects of the visual arts as well as arts of other types. Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.Which of these female visual artists* inspires you the most, or alternatively their biopic? * Painters, Sculptors, Architects, Landscape Architects, Photographers, Filmmakers, Fashion Designers, Interior Designers, Etc.See the partial lists of inspirational female visual artists and their MOVIE BIOPIC list here: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls064675403/ANY FEMALE VISUAL ARTIST BIOPIC SUGGESTIONS ???? Women artistsThe answer pool needs some more options, I have think there are more movies given the breadth of the types of artists this poll suggestion covers.
