In earlier times:

Adventures like Zak McCracken, Maniac Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island.

Even Earlier:

Pac Man, Mario Bros, Donkey Kong, Boulder Dash, Locomotion.

Later:

Die Siedler, Turrican, Quake, Unreal, Diablo, Diablo II, Diablo III.

Now:

Gems of War (didn't expect that I will fall in love with games that hard again today - perfect game concept! A mix like of Yu-Go-Oh (card game) and Heroes of Might and Magic. No pay-wall, commercials - but just if you want them. Pure strategy fun.)

@Breumaster thank you, all suggestions included and sorted out by ratings.

Adventures like Zak McCracken,

I played some pure text-based adventures at my TRS-80 (The Radio Shack) computer. Green phosphor display, resolution 64x16 characters, I guess.

 Boulder Dash,

I played a little bit of Mr. Do at the arcades, but the game is too difficult. I'd rather

played shoot'em'ups like 1942.

Locomotion.

Very difficult puzzle game.

 Quake,

My favorite Doom/Duke Nukem-like game was Shadow Warrior.

@mariojacobs

The problem with those games is, that they are mostly always the same. I was tired of them, so I stopped to play in general until very later I started again to play more positive games. (@3D-shooters).

Civilization III

Civilization IV

Tomb Raider II

Tomb Raider III

GTA: San Andreas

If online/flash games count, I'd replace Civ IV with Daymare Town 4. The games by Mateusz Skutnik are so eerie and artistically creative.

@Tsarstepan I enjoy Walking Simulators, too. I finished Firewatch on Steam. I liked What Remains of Edith Finch a lot.

I own What Remains (Steam as well) but never gotten around to play it and since my home computer is dead (money issues). No real way to even start it. Also have the  Life is Strange sequels (unplayed).

I'm not into video games very much, though I will occasionally play Solitaire online and sometimes do crossword puzzles online.

Interesting. You're describing computerized versions of board/card games besides the role-playing variety.

@jeorj_euler I play Microsoft Solitaire every day.

@Tsarstepan I installed the desktop version and played the daily challenges. I did the same for Minesweeper/Treasure Hunt and Mahjong. I usually reached the diamond badge of the month (all daily challenges completed).

Some of the Assassin's Creed video games what are referred to as mini games (checkers, fanorona and nine men's Morris), which, as classic games, can be amusing to play. (Note: Out of the three, I only know how to play checkers, as I've known how for decades.) Quite a number of video games loosely based upon the role-playing genre have classic little games like those.

@jeorj_euler I don't care for role playing games.  I tried Dungeons and Dragons back in the 70's and found it a waste of time.  I don't care for computerized versions of these either and I tried them with my own kids many years ago.  My grandkids play them now, but I'm still not interested.

I like so many video games, it would be somewhat hard to identify a favorite. However, it would seem that of all the ones I've spent many hours irregularly enjoying with fellow players, Grand Theft Auto Online (on the seventh generation consoles) is at the top, maybe followed closely by the multiplayer modes of Max Payne 3. (I've lost count how many times I've participated in  the heists of Prison Break, Humane Labs Raid, Series A Funding and Pacific Standard.) Some older games that I revisit every decade or half decade include The Sims Bustin' Out and Sonic & Knuckles.

I feel like I failed to nominate Halo 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Some "AAA" games are are cult classic material.
