I've thought about this for a while, and I keep coming back to a certain novel written by George Orwell and which has two movie adaptation.

How you are cataloguing and by extension which movies start with an A is a bit flawed. While, I agree eliminating articles is standard practice. I think you should use the movies worldwide English title as the default. Plus, it will display the English title in the poll and be a lot less confusing.This is how it would be done in a library or a retail store, I would use the Library of Congress or Dewey Decimal system DVD catalogue standards. I think expecting people to know the original foreign title, let alone which foreign words are articles is unrealistic. This is evident in your example,  'Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain' which starts with the letter F not L. Plus, the Library of Congress or Dewey Decimal system DVD catalogue standard would use a single language.

★ "Please also note that the movies are picked by their original title. For example, 'Amélie' does not qualify for this list because its original title is 'Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amélie Poulain' which starts with the letter L".

@urbanemovies

Hi,

Although you make some valid points like I totally forgot about the articles in other languages, I still have a few doubts.

First, I'd like to say that, no, a poll will display the title based on your content settings.

Second, what about movies that don't have any English titles?

And what about movies with Literal translation? (Yes, there are some movies which don't have an official title for the English language, they are just translated word-by-word by people that might not always have the same meaning as the original.)

Fair point, I didn't think of that. I guess those film's with no English title would use its original title (ie Amores Perros (2000) IMDb lists its World-wide (English title) as Love's a Bitch???, although I never heard it used or seen any marketing with that in the USA). I think any system is going to be flawed a little bit. I think the focus should be to use one that is logical, fair and will draw the least criticism for omissions. Partly, why I suggested using the an established system, like the Library of Congress, that has worked all those kinks already.

P.S. You can remove 'Aliens' as my pick, I prefer to let someone else nominate it. I will either re-nominate it, if it hasn't been selected or go with another favorite that I like doesn't get the recognition it deserves.
