Live Poll: I Would Walk 500 Miles and I Would Walk 500 More...

The Proclaimers song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" was prominently featured in the '90s dramedy Benny and Joon after actress Mary Stuart Masterson requested it be included in the film. The song refers to the challenging task of walking 1,000 miles (500 + 500) just in order to be with your love. Movies can be great showcases of grand gestures performed to express love between characters.

Which of these ambitious acts would you most like to see your loved one do for you? Which would melt your heart and cause you to move them forever?

Thank you. Do you have any suggestions? Really hard to look for... I know Say Anything could qualify but I was really going for much grander acts of love...I donno.

"Which would melt your heart and cause you to move them forever?" I guess that should say "love".

I really like this idea, too. I'll put on my thinking cap and see if I can think of any suggestions. Oh, one off the top of my head but I don't know if it would fit because -- well, I won't mention one thing because it's a spoiler but the other is that it's a disturbing film... Anyway, The Vanishing
(Rex searches for Saskia for years and then faces great fear and danger by trying to find her through the man who abducted her.)

Your last two suggestions don't seem that daring or grand to me.

I don't think I want to include animation... And I'm torn about including Titanic - since Jack died...seems like his actions were in vain? Thanks for the rest.

What does "took crime on his name to protect her" mean?

Isn't that the point? That he died for her. There are many  jokes around  that said Jack could have lived if ever Rose would share that raft with him, because it seemed big enough for two. But he gave it for her alone and died instead.

Daisy ran over someone and killed her. But Gatsby let Daisy and her husband told everyone that he drove the car and kill the woman to protect her, later that made him killed by the victim's husband while Daisy got away with it.

I like this idea, it reminds me of that quote that there is no love, but only proofs of love.

I have a few comments here, not sure how to put it correctly but I think I know why you don't want to include animation and this is why I believe you shouldn't include "Fantasy" movies either. They all generally involve stories where proving one's love or one's worth is a must-show in the narrative, and it always consists of acts of generosity or courage, fighting someone or giving up something, plus they exist in a universe where the hero's life is hardly at stakes, we know he'll make it, he's got to survive to make the story worth it, even Phil Connors knew he couldn't die so he had to give his immortality a meaning.

They sure are proofs of love but we can't seriously expect to see our loved one do them for us, not that I took your question too literally but maybe a 'realistic' approach to the poll would be more interesting..So I'm not sure about Lord of the Rings, Princess Bride, Groundhog Day or City of Angels.

Also, the Love Actually one is pretty much a stalker like Ben Braddock in The Graduate, so I'm not sure he took that many risks to reach her, it was a smart move actually, a romantic way to say "I'm watching you".

As for Slumdog Millionnaire, I thought he wanted to get in the show to become a millionnaire or rich enough so Latika would "accept" him, he didn't know then that she didn't care about the money. He couldn't rely his whole plan on the possibility that she would watch the show. What if she didn't and he lost at the first question? Also, it wasn't a daring move, he had nothing to lose and everything to win.

FYC:

Dog Day Afternoon: Sonny robs a bank to pay his wife Leon's sex-change operation, he ends up in jail.

The Graduate: Elaine Robinson runs away in her wedding dress with Ben, abandoning the premise of a steady life with a rich, young and handsome man for... a dorky immature kid in some bus trip where she started wondering whether she made the right choice.

Roxanne: CD. Bales was so in love with Roxanne that he became the 'ghost writer' to the handsome man she was in love with. In fact, you could include the original; Cyrano de Bergerac, it's possibly the most romantic play after Romeo and Juliet.

In the American President, there was a subplot about some environmental Law President Michael Douglas was going to implement jeopardizing his own political future out of love for Miss Wade (Annette Bening's character) more than personal convictions: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HKTqS4bXugg

Life is Beautiful: the mother went to a Concentration Camp although she wasn't Jewish, of course it was out of motherly love but she loved her husband too.

I get your points but I don't agree with them. I have added your suggestions that I agreed with.

Jamal specifically tells the Millionaire host that the only reason he came on the show was to try to get back with Latika - he didn't care about the money, which was why he didn't walk on the last question even though he didn't know the answer. And when they get back together:

Jamal Malik: I knew you'd be watching.

Latika: I thought we would meet only in death.

Jamal Malik: This is our destiny.

Latika: Kiss me.

---Edit---

I haven't seen Life is Beautiful but it sounds like you're saying the son would have had to go to a camp because he was Jewish and the mother wasn't. But Jews believe the religion follows the mother, so in Nazi's eyes, even though he had a Jewish father, he was not Jewish if his mother wasn't.

My "fantasy" point was just because the question was addressed to us in a sort of personal way, so I though it would have fitted the spirit of the questions to suggest proofs of love that cover an area of "feasibility". Arwen's gesture is magnificent but I can't relate to it, I can only 'admire' it from the position of a viewer.

Now, the options can work on a 'what if' level of course.

Your comment about Slumdog Millionnaire made me hate the ending even more, he used the show to get Latika, not for the money and yet he had to win the money, that double-win was totally unnecessary. But I've covered that topic more than once and I'll sound like a broken record.

For Life is Beautiful, I don't think it mattered from an evil racialist perspective, I guess for the Nazis who arrested Guido and his son, even if they knew about the mother (they probably did since she wasn't arrested), the son was still a "half-breed" for them.
