LIVE POLL: Favorite Oscar-Nominated Best Picture Sequel?
In January 2023, Top Gun: Maverick (2022) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) secured Oscar Best Picture nominations for the 95th Academy Awards. In doing so, they became the eighth and ninth films to secure a nomination as an "official" sequel to a prior franchise movie. While not "official" sequels, two other films, The Silence of the Lambs (1991) and Letters from Iwo Jima (2006) have strong ties to a preceding film and, if included in the group, would bring the total to eleven best picture nominees with sequel, prequel, or companion distinctions.
Which of these selected Best Picture Oscar-nominated sequel, prequel or companion movies, that are either directly or indirectly connected to the story line of a previous movie, is your favorite?
For the purpose of this poll, a sequel is a film that continues the story of, or expands upon, some earlier film. A sequel movie portrays events set in the same fictional universe as an earlier movie, usually chronologically, but not always, following the events of a previous film.

(TOP 50) 2020 Oscar Predictions: Gold Derby Predicts the 92nd Academy Awards
Joker 2019 | Movie 8.7 (555,212)
Prequel Movie Series: Batman: The Movie (1966), Batman (1989), Batman Begins (2005), Batman: Year One (2011), and The Batman (2021)
Avengers: Endgame
2019 | Movie 8.5 (628,752)
Sequel Movie: The Avengers (2012)
Toy Story 4
2019 | Movie 7.9 (140,392)
Sequel Movie: Toy Story (1995)
Doctor Sleep 2019 | Movie 7.5 (45,370)
Sequel Movie: The Shining (1980)
A Best Picture nomination for Joker (2019), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Toy Story 4 (2019) or Doctor Sleep (2019) in the Oscars 2020 Best Picture category would bring the total of Best Picture follow-up movies to just under a dozen. A notable mark for an award ceremony that over ninety-two years prizes originality and has demonstrated an aversion to movie series with prequels, sequels or concurrent movies in its nominations.

No 2021 or 2022 Oscar Best Picture Nominees are prequels or sequels.

You mention sequels that aren't official, but it seems odd to list The Sound of Music as a prequel because it was based on a musical which was based on a book which was previously adapted into another movie, which had a sequel.
I noticed Wikipedia moved the paragraph which mentioned The Sound of Music out of the section on sequels. You cite Wikipedia as the source of the list, but Wikipedia says nine sequels were nominated.

FYI, I ran across these two media franchises, Bourne and Cloverfield, with "official" and "unofficial" titles. I think they are examples of the disconnect between what is promoted as a sequel, but usually comes with the caveat of being called an "indirect", rather than a " direct" sequel, and those that are a clear story continuation. Anyways, I think both are examples of being more about being from the same producers, rather than directly continuing the same storyline. To be clear, I am not against being creative in where a sequel is taken, only in excluding those that are obvious continuations of the same story. Plus, there are franchises that make even more egregious sequel claims than these.
