Live Poll: Favorite Movie Heroine of 2018

Although women fill less than one third of speaking roles and represent less than one third of named characters in movies, several strong and memorable female protagonists have come to life throughout cinematic history. To celebrate the emergence of more bold, brave, and colorful women and girls, which of these heroines from 2018 is your favorite?

*Suggestions very welcome* (Inclusion criteria: feature film, released in 2018 and not on last year's poll, with an IMDb rating of at least 6.0 or a Metacritic rating of at least 60; women must not be portrayed in a stereotypical, objectifying, or misogynist way) Thank you.

Maybe the cast of Widows could be included though I didn't like the film that much, but it does fit the criteria. That point you made about female roles made me think of a poll I wanted to suggest once but I couldn't find many examples...

You can make a poll about female heroines, about female villains, about strong female characters, but think about that: can you make a poll about female losers? I mean "losers" in the likable and cinematically appealing meaning of the word, losers like the Dude Lebowski, like Dumb and Dumber, like Travis Bickle... I'll try to make a list right now but all I can think of are Gena Rowlands in A Woman Under the Influence, Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream, Margot Robbie in I, Tonya... well maybe we can work it out...

Maybe Lee Remmick in 'Days of Wine and Roses?' Hmm, I feel like a whole bunch of their names are on the tip of my tongue but I can't quite think of them right now, I like that idea, though. I wonder if we could coin a term, lol. Not anti-heroes but... hmmm... maybe "likable losers" like you said but I was trying to think of something new or "cinematic," lol.

Thanks for the Widows suggestion: I'll add them later when I have some time again.

Please Note: Very few movies from India or subcontinents get Metascore rating. Among these 4 FYCs, only #1 has got a 60+ Metascore. But, it'll be great if you add these. These are the most notable female performances from India in 2018.

Suggestion:
The girl from "Rampage."  (Can't remember her name!)  If it wasn't for her, there would've been no anecdote for the animals.

Sadly, your State of the Movie Heroine for 2018 is right on the money. But, I have been noticing the number of roles has been on a slight upswing. Plus, the type and depth of roles have improved a bit too the past few years.

I do think you could easily fill the answer pool though with both popular and well-regarded heroines. I listed some additional options that should be at least in the discussion. I might limit Black Panther to one or two options and  Avengers: Infinity War to one or none, as there are too many strong leading options.

FYC
High Profile Heroines
Holly Hunter Incredibles 2 Helen Parr / Elastigirl (voice)
Bryce Dallas Howard  Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom Claire Dearing
Zazie Beetz  Deadpool 2 Domino (supporting)
Evangeline Lilly Ant-Man and the Wasp. Hope Van Dyne / Wasp
Emilia Clarke Solo: A Star Wars Story Qi'ra
Olivia Cooke  Ready Player One Art3mis / Samantha
Emily Blunt A Quiet Place Evelyn Abbott

Lower Profile Heroines
Jennifer Garner  Peppermint Riley North
Constance Wu  Crazy Rich Asians Rachel Chu
Florence Pugh Outlaw King Elizabeth Burgh (supporting)
Bella Thorne  Midnight Sun Katie Price
Claire Foy  The Girl in the Spider's Web: A New Dragon Tattoo Story Lisbeth Salander Amandla Stenberg The Darkest Minds  Ruby Daly
Thomasin McKenzie Leave No Trace Tom

Supporting Role Heroine (All-Star Movie)
Scarlett Johansson  Avengers: Infinity War Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (supporting)
Elizabeth Olsen Avengers: Infinity War Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (supporting)
Zoe Saldana Avengers: Infinity War Gamora (supporting)

???? (Not Viewed Yet) Possibles
Sandra Bullock .Bird Box  Malorie
Hailee Steinfeld  Bumblebee Charlie
Amber Heard Aquaman Mera

Ditto තරිඳු ධනංජය/Thorin FYC
Jennifer Lawrence  Red Sparrow Dominika Egorova
Ditto Dibyayan Chakravorty,FYC
Deepika Padukone Padmaavat Queen Padmavati [Biopic]

My two cents, A balanced poll with blockbuster and indies, heavy weight heroines and underdog heroines, rising stars and established ones to me feels right. You have some tough choices to make on who to cut and who to add. I would now least support these supporting heroines and one leading heroine due to space considerations.

Supporting Role Heroines
Scarlett Johansson  Avengers: Infinity War Natasha Romanoff / Black Widow (supporting)
Elizabeth Olsen Avengers: Infinity War Wanda Maximoff / Scarlet Witch (supporting)
Zoe Saldana Avengers: Infinity War Gamora (supporting)
Zazie Beetz  Deadpool 2 Domino (supporting)
Florence Pugh Outlaw King Elizabeth Burgh (supporting)

Amandla Stenberg The Darkest Minds Ruby Daly

My under-the radar dark horse candidate, I would lobby for is Bella Thorne  Midnight Sun as Katie Price, a heroic teen who is fighting a rare disease. I best like Holly Hunter Incredibles 2 Helen Parr / Elastigirl (voice) for fictional characters and Felicity Jones On the Basis of Sex Ruth Bader Ginsburg for real-life characters.

Since 'Infinity War' was such a big hit, it seems like I should try to include at least one of them if they really fit the criteria, unless they're more minor than some supporting roles that are as central as the lead role, or practically so. In case I don't find a photo with all of them, how "supporting" are they and are any more central than others?

Thank you, so very much, for all your help.

This list has each characters screen time. Maybe It will help. :D
BTW, Gamora will be the first choice unless you want to add Thanos to this. :/

Your welcome.

As for 'Infinity War' I think the roles are too minor over so many leads with five times as much screen time. I can understand a token spot (one spot each) allocated since either that or Black Panther were the most viewed films of the year. Holly Hunter Incredibles 2 Helen Parr / Elastigirl (voice) is more deserving for example when she goes off to fight crime and be the "breadwinner", while  Craig T. Nelson ... Bob Parr / Mr. Incredible (voice) stays at home to take care of the household. Bella Thorne  Midnight Sun,  Jennifer Lawrence  Red Sparrow Dominika Egorova and Sandra Bullock .Bird Box  Malorie, all these leads beat out the 'Infinity War' or 'Black Panther' supporting cast roles, in my opinion.

I added Helen from Incredibles 2. Thanks for the information and suggestion.  I meant to add Bella from 'Midnight Sun;' if I have time, I'll add her.

I very well may do a "part two" and will add more of your suggestions there. I wish I would have had more time and certain information because I would have split up the characters from the 'Avengers' movie and 'Black Panther' and put half on the second part of the poll.

Anyway, thanks for all the suggestions.

The biggest ones that seem to be missing to me are:
Natalie Portman in Ahhihilation as Lena
Charlize Theron in Tully as Marlo
Tessa Thompson in Sorry to Bother You as Detroit
Toni Collette in Hereditary as Annie.

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria in addition to what is stated above in original post (feature film, released in 2018 and not on last year's poll, with an IMDb rating of at least 6.0 or a Metacritic rating of at least 60; women must not be portrayed in a stereotypical, objectifying, or misogynist way):

1.) The movie must have been been released in the United States by 15 December, 2018. (For example: 'On the Basis of Sex' (released 11 January, 2019) and 'If Beale Street Could Talk' (released in some U.S. cities 25 December, 2018) are, therefore, not included but will be in next year's poll.

2.)  If a character was included in the 2017 poll, it will not be included in this year's poll, regardless of release date.

3.) No animated characters.

Has anyone seen Ocean's 8? I haven't so I can't judge well. I don't even know if any of them could be considered heroes and I certainly can't assess whether they're portrayed in "a stereotypical, objectifying, or misogynist way:" The movie is f-rated but some of the plot keywords give me pause -- they're out of context so I have no idea, though.

Also, if anyone has seen any of 2018's superhero movies or blockbusters, more feedback would be helpful: I rarely see either and although I've gotten some great feedback, 'the more perspectives the better.

Thank you!

I have a rhetorical question here.
Would this poll be less interesting without the preconceived notion in the head-strings:
Although women fill less than one third of speaking roles and represent less than one third of named characters in movies...
?
No matter whether the above is a pro-male assert, or a hidden suffragistic slogan to act against such a situation... Cinematography is mostly beloved for its close-to-real perfomances, so I feel as if a half of all women all over the world become dead in a moment after that statement.
