I haven't seen the film, but from what I have read Sean Penn's character in This Must Be the Place is referred to as male. Should he be on the list?

Kurt Russell in Tango & Cash is only a brief drag appearance, so I'm not sure he should be on the list either, but there is a picture here:

No. Penn shouldn't be.

Paok-Kilkis, I'm a little unclear on the criteria. Is it one or more of these (the use of male/female here are just for examples and could be switched and mean the same; similarly TV show/movie could be substituted for film)?

- When an actor straight-out plays someone of the opposite sex. A female actor plays a male character. As far as anyone in the film knows, that person is a male - for example Adam Sandler in Jack and Jill, Tyler Perry in the Madea movies

- When a character lives as the opposite sex. A character the audience knows is a male dresses/acts as a female to convince the other characters in the film he is a female - the three characters in To Wong Foo

- When an actor plays a character who is transgender. A character was born as one sex, then became another sex, often because they feel they were born in the wrong body - the other characters may or may not be aware of this - John Lithgow in Garp, Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club

- When a character dresses/acts as the opposite gender as an act of subterfuge as part of the story - the other characters may or may not be aware of this - Robin Williams in Mrs. Doubtfire, the boys from Some Like It Hot

- An actor briefly dresses/acts as the opposite sex aiming to accomplish a specific purpose - Gwyneth Paltrow in Shakespeare in Love, Julie Andrews in Victor Victoria

So should the list specifically contain one or more of these? All of them? Hope that makes sense.

I understand what you are saying. The list contains all of them. No matter if they dress like woman for a purpose or if they do it because they think they were born in the wrong body.

I'm not sure that this fits the criteria but it's a case like Tootsie so perhaps it does:

So, we're not bothering to differentiate between actors portraying characters impersonating the opposite sex and actors portraying characters belonging to the sex opposite of those actors?
