@Pencho15 Little Miss Sunshine and Juno were both on lists of the greatest American art films that both Rolling Stone and Empire published. I suggested those lists to Brijesh via this poll of mine: https://www.imdb.com/poll/jF-TDQJ_Y98/results?ref_=po_sr

Oops, I'm sorry: the lists from Rolling Stone and Empire aren't of greatest art films but of greatest independent films. There are certainly many films generally considered art films on those lists but not all of the movies are. I apologize for the confusion. 

I just looked at the magazine articles. Rolling Stone does describe all of the films of "going against the grain" and having "irritated the mainstream" but it doesn't actually use the phrase "art films" in the introduction, anyway. 

Empire's intro gets at the trouble of what makes an "indie" that is also applicable to the problem of defining an "art film," although they don't mention the phrase "art film" in the introduction, either. I think this quote from them is pretty funny: "Our criteria is aesthetic rather than financial: if it feels like an indie, it's in; if it's The Phantom Menace, it's not."

I have made some changes to the list:

Removed those 3 that Pencho mentioned. Removed Pulp Fiction because that will likely be a run away winner and it is now a cult that makes it appealing to larger audiences.

Removed 1 of Yimou Zhang movie before the list had 3 of his movies. 

New entrants inspired from Pancho's suggestions and Rotton Totamotes list.

It looks better to me now. :)
