Added the first 3. I will add the other 2, if I get enough to create a separate list.

Thanks for suggestions!

FYC for 1960s:

Don't Look Back

Fahrenheit 451

Ivan's Childhood

Knife in the Water

Repulsion

Belle du Jour

Faces

Easy Rider

(all of the above have more than 5,000 votes)

Here's a poll that you can mine for other films for the 1970s onward: https://www.imdb.com/poll/jF-TDQJ_Y98/results?ref_=po_sr

There are links in the intro to longer lists in Rolling Stone and Empire that you can also check for more movies if you'd like. : )

(The poll and the lists only include American films so they're limited sources but still good ones.)

Thank you for all suggestions. Now, 60s and 70-80s list is full. I will finish other(s) later. Probably will make 2 instead for the last one.

May I suggest two small edits to the intro? ('Good intro, btw)

An art film is typically an independent film aimed at a niche market rather than a mass market audience.

During the 1960s, the term "art film" began to be much more widely used in the United States than in Europe.

Here are some of the best art films made in the 1960s. Which of these movies do you think is the most artistic?

There's probably no need to include six Bergman films if you can have some more variety.

FYC:

Woman in the Dunes (1964)

When you start adding Bergman films, you don't feel like leaving any of them. :D

Now, it has a bit more variety.

Hi Brijesh, I was just looking at your 70s-80s list and noticed that you're missing a period after the second paragraph of the intro:

philosophical and ethical issues.

'Another good list! : )

I don't know if Crash, Little Miss Sunshine or Juno can be considered art films, they were certainly made to appeal to wider audiences.

FYC:

In the Mood for Love

Ulysses's Gaze

Brokeback Mountain

@Pencho15 Little Miss Sunshine and Juno were both on lists of the greatest American art films that both Rolling Stone and Empire published. I suggested those lists to Brijesh via this poll of mine: https://www.imdb.com/poll/jF-TDQJ_Y98/results?ref_=po_sr

Oops, I'm sorry: the lists from Rolling Stone and Empire aren't of greatest art films but of greatest independent films. There are certainly many films generally considered art films on those lists but not all of the movies are. I apologize for the confusion.

I just looked at the magazine articles. Rolling Stone does describe all of the films of "going against the grain" and having "irritated the mainstream" but it doesn't actually use the phrase "art films" in the introduction, anyway.

Empire's intro gets at the trouble of what makes an "indie" that is also applicable to the problem of defining an "art film," although they don't mention the phrase "art film" in the introduction, either. I think this quote from them is pretty funny: "Our criteria is aesthetic rather than financial: if it feels like an indie, it's in; if it's The Phantom Menace, it's not."

I have made some changes to the list:

Removed those 3 that Pencho mentioned. Removed Pulp Fiction because that will likely be a run away winner and it is now a cult that makes it appealing to larger audiences.

Removed 1 of Yimou Zhang movie before the list had 3 of his movies.

New entrants inspired from Pancho's suggestions and Rotton Totamotes list.

It looks better to me now. :)
