Wrong IMDB rating of movie "The Kashmir Files"

Inspite of very high ratings of the movie "The Kashmir Files" you are decreasing the ratings yourself. I just want you to know 99% of people in India are liking this movie and finds it extraordinary. Why you are biased with India? The reality is you can not see any movie of our country have highest ratings in the World.

Hello All -

Thank you for your comments to IMDb regarding the user rating for the film “The Kashmir Files.”

IMDb allows all registered users to cast a vote from 1 to 10 on any movie or television show after it has been released. These votes are aggregated into a single user rating, based on a weighted average method which takes into consideration multiple factors, in addition to the numerical value of each individual vote (including a complex formula designed to detect and defeat attempts to influence and skew the results).

When unusual voting activity is detected (e.g. voting patterns whose volume, distribution and/or velocity are consistent with an organized intent to influence the rating) our system employs an additional methodology for calculating the aggregate rating. We use this alternate method of ratings calculation only when a title has been the focus of unusual voting behavior; it is not based on the title’s topic, origin or any other external considerations.

To highlight when the rating is calculated via this alternative method, the following notification is displayed on the title’s vote distribution page: “NOTE: Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied.”

More information about IMDb ratings can be found here:
https://help.imdb.com/article/imdb/track-movies-tv/ratings-faq/G67Y87TFYYP6TWAV

Thank you again for your interest in IMDb.

@Michelle I think you have not understood the major issue. We are intelligent enough to understand that there are instances when because of  a bias, a group voting happens with all voting 10 ( I am not sure whether converse is true ie 1 rating). And there has to be a corrective action. This is well explained in your FAQ. We are not interested because this action is required.
But we are talking about a movie which touched an emotional center in Indian minds. From somewhere around 100000 to the current 450000 voted your rating is stuck at 8.3.  So we feel insulted.
The action should have been, withhold display of rating and all data, and may be after a predetermined period, if you continue to see the surge, as it has been in this case, restore the rating to the original mode.
Else if the rating shows 8.3 even if 10 ratings reach infinity, why have a rating for the movie. At least you can save us the insult. Since 99% of these voters are first time, they will not be able to understand your algo, feel insulted, and you will start facing ban. 50% of your ratings run on Indian feedback.
Now, the viewership of the movies is more than 100 times the raters here, and the movie is on the way to create unprecedented record in Indian history, that too without promotion from bigwigs. So my request is remove it from your lists so that we do not feel insulted.
And do not give the above reply, which we already know, and may be write it better. Thanks for being insensitive.

This title currently has 63,155 ratings of which 60,050 are 10 stars.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10811166/

These are not legitimate ratings at all, here's a post with comments of a bunch of people bragging about leaving fake 10-star reviews on it:

https://www.reddit.com/r/Chodi/comments/tcn1yj/i_am_doing_my_part/

How is this monitored or dealt with? It's this kind of thing that completely undermines the whole point of movies having a weighted score.

You just admitted you are from Pakistan - clearly you are not biased. There are millions of documents and video evidence this movie is based on - every scene has been methodically documented. Also, nearly 500k people in the world are named Vivek:

So, instead of sitting here criticizing a movie that you CANNOT even watch in Pakistan, I believe you should go criticize your own Pakistani movies or simply look for a job instead of being part of China and Pakistan's cyber troll army

@Bethanny Thanks for looking into this. The current fascist government of India is currently planning a genocide by rewriting history which they try to do through films like these. As you can see in the comments, how they hire trolls to harass anyone speaking up is astonishing. Taking action against such activities could help avoid even wars. Thank you very much once again for standing for the truth.

India also known as Bharat was one whole country which was broken by political leaders for their own vetted interest. I suggest you learn the history before you spew such comments. There was no division of India until the greed of men thought to divide n conquer. Truth will always come out which is why there is a lot of evidence against the perpetrators. You believe in God, even that same god will be ashamed of the actions of the perpetrators of hurting innocent and killing people with such brutality and barbaric ways.

The Kashmir Files, a film based on Kashmiri Hindu Genocide in 1990 has been relegatedon IMDb and the rating has curtailed to 8.3/10.

The arithmetic mean is 9.6 while the median is 10 and more than 90% people voted 10 for the movie (as on 14/03/2022). But an abrupt plunge in the rating is preposterous and seems politically motivated. The reason stated "Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied" is unreasonable and implausible. The people who watched the movie are able to connect to it and voted good for it. So what's 'unusual' in it? Why the same system isn't applied to all the movies who are rated above 9? The reliability of your rating system is more contentious after this act.

The Kashmir Files (2022) - User ratings - IMDb

"Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied."

I can very well understand the need for such correction, as in the case of bogus/biased voting.

The Kashmir Files:

The nearest movie I can think of is the "Schinder's list".

The referred movie is based on real events which happened in the genocide of Kashmir Pundits in 1990, under the eyes of Government. No social media on those days. And no one can explain as to how such a horrific event went unnoticed in other parts of India. Gradually facts came to be known but without details. This movie has been a genuine attempt with years of research on the issue. It was released on 11 Mar 2022, with no advertisement, no promotion and without "blessings" of Bollywood. So the Indians have taken up the cause, through social media and word of mouth. The response has been unbelievable with full houses. The screens have increased. Some theaters show this movie on a 24 hour schedule. Will be showing somewhere near you also. The movie has deeply affected the viewers for two reasons, the real events, secndly, the unawareness of happening of such an event in a country like India, So IMDB ratings have been nearly 10 from each of them.

Whosoever sees this movie will rate this either 10 or 0 (binary) - you can see the ratings. Now Normal will be 10, But those who did not want these facts to be known will rate it 0 (about 5% as it stands now).
Pl assume that I may be  biased about this movie. Now my query.

The algorithm will see within a short span 95% voting 10, no spread, 5% 0 - The alternate weightage mechanism kicks in, as it should be. But I have an issue, once in a blue moon, such movies do happen. If over the next few days, the trend continues in this fashion and from the current poll of 100 thou to say 10 million, and ratings continue 95% 10, Then what happens?
Will the system takes it as a genuine trend and revert back to nearly 10, or continue as it is?

Hope someone will read this and answer me.
The IMDB ratings will not affect the viewership, Thank God. But I have an issue. This movie could be Oscar material, and I do not want IMDB ratings to contradict. Of course, one is through a panel and the other is viewership. But still...

I recently watched and rated The Kashmir files, but I noticed even though the user ratings are above 9 IMDb is showing it to be 8.3 with a note which says IMDb noted some unusual voting activity due to which they had to choose an alternate weightage criteria.

I wanted to understand why/what and how does it works, or is it just IMDb trying to monopolies the movie ratings by not considering user ratings?

Indians are gone crazy to watch this masterpiece. I think IMDB never saw this much 10/10 ratings before. Thats why IMDB thought its bot.

IMDB must understand that most of the ratings are given by people of the country of world's second largest population.

13 million = 0.01% of India's population. So, less than 0.001% of population voted till now. It will be higher in future.

IMDB must take some action to prevent problem in rating calculation.

The Indian Movie titled, "The Kashmir Files" is one of the best movies ever to have been made in India. We have waited for years for the release of this movie and almost every Indian has cried after watching this movie. It has got to do with the history of our country. Because every Indian loved it do much, everyone jad rated it a 10/10 on your IMDB rating app. Your team has suddenly lowered the rating of the movie giving a vague reason. This is not fair. This movie is a revolution in Indian Cinema nad you all have just lowered its rating because you all believe the voting is not fair. This is not done by your side. Do you all have any proof of fraudulent voting. Is this being done because you all don't want an Indian movie to land up on the IMDB top 10. Please reconsider this decision of yours to lpwer the rating of the movie. Please don't be biased against Indian Cinema. Watch this movie by yourseld and you will realise why it jas been rated so high. This movie is going to have the highest box office collection in India. Sorry if I was rude but please reconsider this decision of using an alternative method to lower the ratings.

The weighted mechanism applied to " the kashmir file" is not understable. With over 138k reting it's not on the popular list while junk movies with 500 rating are in the list, that shows how much money is channeled to your system, it's not reliable at all. You discriminate against eastern movies and biased toward western movies is unbearable and pathetic.

How you can show the avg weightage rating as 8.3 !? Most of the audiences have votes 10/10 we can clearly see that.. So it will get automatically more than 9/10...is that any computer error or you are making the rating less by knowingly!?

The culprit according to me is the excess weightage of just 3 voters (in top 1000 voters category) who have all rated it as 1. Even your US/NonUS users have rated it above 9.3. Time you disabled the alternate weightage algorithm, for this movie. Else you are insulting the genuine raters who have rated it 10. This film will have only 2 choices 10 (normal) or 1 (Haters). Just go and watch this movie in your circle, with some Kashmiri pandit friends (many would have settled near your location), and I will rest my case. My bet is that you wish you had a rating option of  10+.

P.S: Most of these reviewers are first time voters, so your algo is likely to give least weightage or even consider them as BOTs. I cannot think of any other reason for the plunge in rating.

Non-US Users

9.6

Fully supporting your follow up on it.

All ratings are genuine.

Please let me know if they are listening , else expose them. We will go to court and Government to make sure that they are banned in the act which is against the country by blocking the true ratings and not keeping this movie in popular list.

Hi harrykrishn-

In IMDb we don't use the arithmetic mean when calculating the ratings, we use a weighted average scheme. Though you can still see the arithmetic average when going in the detailed breakdown of the ratings. I encourage you to visit our guidelines to learn more about this.

Thanks!

@BethannyThis is wrong - IMDb would not attempt to whitewash The Schindler's List - doing this to The Kashmir Files is racist, anti-hindu, bigoted, xenophobic, and discriminatory against India and its people whose suffering is being attempted to be washed away by your racist attempt to weigh the scale. Human suffering should not be whitewashed.

@Bethanny Thanks for a response.

I understand why there has to be an alternate method when you see an unusually large voting on 10. I wish you to consider 2 movies Gandhi and Schindler's list. There will be a reasonably large distributed voting on say 5-10 and also on 1. Now let us talk about The Kashmir Files. It is a genocide related movie, which involved displacement of 500 thousand Hindus, and the movie has involved a research of 4 years, by an individual, famous for similar 2 earlier movies, unbacked by The big houses in movie (Bolly wood), no sponsors. But the movie touched the Indians in millions, in just last 4 days despite targeting by bigwigs to suppress, it touched a nerve, an the result is what happened. The screens are increasing in no.s every day, and whosoever has seen is bringing in many more to watch. Some theatres are showing round the clock. The promo is only through social media and word of mouth.
Also since people are considering it as Oscar material (my bias of course), they are flocking to IMDB and rating it here. The rating by topic will be either 10 (most of them) or 1 (who did not wish this movie to click - like big houses). No spread in between.
The end result is that an alarming no. 250000 have voted it 10 and around 10000 have voted 1.
Now let us analyse.
The algorithm looking at abnormal traffic kicked in. 99% of the 10 raters are first time, so it treated them as motivated mass voters and gave an abnormally low weightage, and there are traditional voters in 1 rating, some of them do not want this movie to click, so instances like, the 3 voters in top 1000 voters etc. have influenced the rating to go down to 8.3 from nearly 10.
Now I have a question.
This is an unusual but probable scenario. Once in a blue moon a movie will touch the heart of a viewer, and feeling that justice should be done, rates the movie 10. But the algo is an algo, and it downgrades that rating.
But remember these are genuine raters and they have used IMDB for first time, and you are disappointing them. So they have started (ban) #IMDB move. Your algo is creating a mistrust in your rating system. So think about what you are planning to do. I feel this voting may continue and may exceed a million, which may prove my point. Then you may have to do something.
But the other scenario is bad. They have lost faith in your system. So they will stop voting. As a business you know the implications.
I know I may be biased in the whole argument. But as an Indian, I feel, I should try to correct, if I feel some thing is wrong, in my opinion. For sure it is not Hollywood. But it is not Bollywood either. It is an individual's mammoth effort, which will be insulted. Since we form one sixth of global population, the success of the movie is foregone conclusion. But we would like global appreciation. The movie is screened world wide, may be near your area also.
If you have read it till here, thanks for your patience. I know you cannot change a rule for just one movie. But I can always put forth my opinion.
P.S:  There are around 7500 reviews, definitely not by mass or bots. Definitely they should weigh in for my argument.

Check #IMDB and #TheKashmirFiles in twitter and tickets for The Kashmir Files in bookmyshow site.

@Bethanny The Kashmiri Files Rating is stuck at 8.3 from 150000 10 raters to 360000 raters.  Pl note I am not going into lengthy comment. As I have explained in my earlier 3 comments, Once in a blue moon, such a movie happens. And if you cannot digest that, May God bless IMDB. We will move forward. I will again visit when raters exceed 0.5 million and your weighted average (sic) if stuck at 8.3

I am following the ratings for The Kashmir Files since last 2 days and it is stuck at 8.3 on 13th March 2022 night and still no change even after the share (%) of the rating of 10, 9 & 8 increased but still it is showing 8.3. Also as per my knowledge almost all users who have rated high ratings - 10, 9 & 8 for this movie are genuine. Even if there is option of 10+ ratings, most of the users will opt for the same.

Request to IMDb to look into the same as per me someone in your system manually manipulating the ratings. As per my last 2 days watch on the ratings, it should be more than 9.5 based on weightage.

How did you change the rating from 9.9 to 8.3 in just couple of hours. Is there any propaganda or agenda you guys are thinking? I use to examine the movies the this rating but now that i realize that you guys are the deciding factor of the rating we come to know that the ratings are decided from your side and not from audience side. Such thing are always solely responsible for the downfall of any platform or anything. Even if it corrected by the algorithm then also 8.3 which is very low is decided by your side not algorithm. It cannot be 8.3 by any means. above 9.5 always. So take care if not then your hypocrisy will reach the peak.

If not, why? If yes, why not 'Kashmir files'? From your description, it seems that no movie can ever score 10 out of 10 because if a movie score that then you will write "Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied." And downgrade it. Is your system reliable?

I had given my review to on imdb for movie "The Kashmir Files". it's 10/10 and even most of people given review to The Kashmir File as 10/10.

and after 2-3 days of release The Kashmir Files Movie IMDB change methodology of average rating count did change for just 1 movie which

is "The Kashmir Files" and it's rating change 8.3/10 instead of 10/10.

it's indicates IMDB Must control or force by Bollywood Mafia which is not interest to release this movie.

Now i have many question and i had many reason to IMDb is untrusted for Movie Rating. and i request to all people Please,

Don't trust on IMDb it's not trust worthy, it's handle by mafia, in Rating of Bollywood Movie it's totally handle by Bollywood Mafia,

and all people know who's Bollywood Mafia.

I had dam sure this issue must be deleted by IMDb also.
