Algorithm which kicks in for alternate calculation of weighted average
The Kashmir Files (2022) - User ratings - IMDb
"Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied."
I can very well understand the need for such correction, as in the case of bogus/biased voting.
The Kashmir Files:
The nearest movie I can think of is the "Schinder's list".
The referred movie is based on real events which happened in the genocide of Kashmir Pundits in 1990, under the eyes of Government. No social media on those days. And no one can explain as to how such a horrific event went unnoticed in other parts of India. Gradually facts came to be known but without details. This movie has been a genuine attempt with years of research on the issue. It was released on 11 Mar 2022, with no advertisement, no promotion and without "blessings" of Bollywood. So the Indians have taken up the cause, through social media and word of mouth. The response has been unbelievable with full houses. The screens have increased. Some theaters show this movie on a 24 hour schedule. Will be showing somewhere near you also. The movie has deeply affected the viewers for two reasons, the real events, secndly, the unawareness of happening of such an event in a country like India, So IMDB ratings have been nearly 10 from each of them.
Whosoever sees this movie will rate this either 10 or 0 (binary) - you can see the ratings. Now Normal will be 10, But those who did not want these facts to be known will rate it 0 (about 5% as it stands now).
Pl assume that I may be biased about this movie. Now my query.
The algorithm will see within a short span 95% voting 10, no spread, 5% 0 - The alternate weightage mechanism kicks in, as it should be. But I have an issue, once in a blue moon, such movies do happen. If over the next few days, the trend continues in this fashion and from the current poll of 100 thou to say 10 million, and ratings continue 95% 10, Then what happens?
Will the system takes it as a genuine trend and revert back to nearly 10, or continue as it is?
Hope someone will read this and answer me.
The IMDB ratings will not affect the viewership, Thank God. But I have an issue. This movie could be Oscar material, and I do not want IMDB ratings to contradict. Of course, one is through a panel and the other is viewership. But still...

I recently watched and rated The Kashmir files, but I noticed even though the user ratings are above 9 IMDb is showing it to be 8.3 with a note which says IMDb noted some unusual voting activity due to which they had to choose an alternate weightage criteria.
I wanted to understand why/what and how does it works, or is it just IMDb trying to monopolies the movie ratings by not considering user ratings?

Indians are gone crazy to watch this masterpiece. I think IMDB never saw this much 10/10 ratings before. Thats why IMDB thought its bot.
IMDB must understand that most of the ratings are given by people of the country of world's second largest population.
13 million = 0.01% of India's population. So, less than 0.001% of population voted till now. It will be higher in future.
IMDB must take some action to prevent problem in rating calculation.

The Indian Movie titled, "The Kashmir Files" is one of the best movies ever to have been made in India. We have waited for years for the release of this movie and almost every Indian has cried after watching this movie. It has got to do with the history of our country. Because every Indian loved it do much, everyone jad rated it a 10/10 on your IMDB rating app. Your team has suddenly lowered the rating of the movie giving a vague reason. This is not fair. This movie is a revolution in Indian Cinema nad you all have just lowered its rating because you all believe the voting is not fair. This is not done by your side. Do you all have any proof of fraudulent voting. Is this being done because you all don't want an Indian movie to land up on the IMDB top 10. Please reconsider this decision of yours to lpwer the rating of the movie. Please don't be biased against Indian Cinema. Watch this movie by yourseld and you will realise why it jas been rated so high. This movie is going to have the highest box office collection in India. Sorry if I was rude but please reconsider this decision of using an alternative method to lower the ratings.

The weighted mechanism applied to " the kashmir file" is not understable. With over 138k reting it's not on the popular list while junk movies with 500 rating are in the list, that shows how much money is channeled to your system, it's not reliable at all. You discriminate against eastern movies and biased toward western movies is unbearable and pathetic.
