Sudden plunge in the rating of The Kashmir Files
The Kashmir Files, a film based on Kashmiri Hindu Genocide in 1990 has been relegatedon IMDb and the rating has curtailed to 8.3/10.
The arithmetic mean is 9.6 while the median is 10 and more than 90% people voted 10 for the movie (as on 14/03/2022). But an abrupt plunge in the rating is preposterous and seems politically motivated. The reason stated "Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied" is unreasonable and implausible. The people who watched the movie are able to connect to it and voted good for it. So what's 'unusual' in it? Why the same system isn't applied to all the movies who are rated above 9? The reliability of your rating system is more contentious after this act.

The Kashmir Files (2022) - User ratings - IMDb
"Our rating mechanism has detected unusual voting activity on this title. To preserve the reliability of our rating system, an alternate weighting calculation has been applied."
I can very well understand the need for such correction, as in the case of bogus/biased voting.
The Kashmir Files:
The nearest movie I can think of is the "Schinder's list".
The referred movie is based on real events which happened in the genocide of Kashmir Pundits in 1990, under the eyes of Government. No social media on those days. And no one can explain as to how such a horrific event went unnoticed in other parts of India. Gradually facts came to be known but without details. This movie has been a genuine attempt with years of research on the issue. It was released on 11 Mar 2022, with no advertisement, no promotion and without "blessings" of Bollywood. So the Indians have taken up the cause, through social media and word of mouth. The response has been unbelievable with full houses. The screens have increased. Some theaters show this movie on a 24 hour schedule. Will be showing somewhere near you also. The movie has deeply affected the viewers for two reasons, the real events, secndly, the unawareness of happening of such an event in a country like India, So IMDB ratings have been nearly 10 from each of them.
Whosoever sees this movie will rate this either 10 or 0 (binary) - you can see the ratings. Now Normal will be 10, But those who did not want these facts to be known will rate it 0 (about 5% as it stands now).
Pl assume that I may be biased about this movie. Now my query.
The algorithm will see within a short span 95% voting 10, no spread, 5% 0 - The alternate weightage mechanism kicks in, as it should be. But I have an issue, once in a blue moon, such movies do happen. If over the next few days, the trend continues in this fashion and from the current poll of 100 thou to say 10 million, and ratings continue 95% 10, Then what happens?
Will the system takes it as a genuine trend and revert back to nearly 10, or continue as it is?
Hope someone will read this and answer me.
The IMDB ratings will not affect the viewership, Thank God. But I have an issue. This movie could be Oscar material, and I do not want IMDB ratings to contradict. Of course, one is through a panel and the other is viewership. But still...

How you can show the avg weightage rating as 8.3 !? Most of the audiences have votes 10/10 we can clearly see that.. So it will get automatically more than 9/10...is that any computer error or you are making the rating less by knowingly!?

The culprit according to me is the excess weightage of just 3 voters (in top 1000 voters category) who have all rated it as 1. Even your US/NonUS users have rated it above 9.3. Time you disabled the alternate weightage algorithm, for this movie. Else you are insulting the genuine raters who have rated it 10. This film will have only 2 choices 10 (normal) or 1 (Haters). Just go and watch this movie in your circle, with some Kashmiri pandit friends (many would have settled near your location), and I will rest my case. My bet is that you wish you had a rating option of 10+.
P.S: Most of these reviewers are first time voters, so your algo is likely to give least weightage or even consider them as BOTs. I cannot think of any other reason for the plunge in rating.
