Inspired by Benu...

In honor of the host nation of the XXI Commonwealth Games 2018, a salute to movies set in Australia.

Which of these movies set with a Australian backdrop for at least a portion of the film is your favorite?

DC,
Favorite Movie With Australia as a Backdrop Are you using Australia as a "setting" or as a "location"?  A location is where a movie is filmed, a setting is where movies says the story takes place (even if it filmed elsewhere).

I am pretty sure a lot of these movies do not use Australia as a setting .ie backdrop. The Great Gatsby is set in Long Island and NYC, Jaws is set on the fictional Island of Amity Island, The Thin Red Line is set on Guadalcanal. Hacksaw Ridge is set in Korea and the USA. Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith is set in a galaxy far, far away. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at Hogwarts and other British locales. There are a lot of others, I think are wrong because they are not even set on Earth, (ie Pitch Black (2000)) I would double check your list.

I was surprised Crocodile Dundee didn't make the cut for Australian backdropped movies??? Here is a list that might help: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_films_set_in_Australia

Benu,

I searched for Australia as a filming location.

Thanks for sharing the Wiki link. I'll surely update my list.

I was wrong about Hacksaw Ridge it was set on Okinawa, Japan. You can either stick with the original idea or you could use the search and do a surprising "Movies That You Didn't Know Were Shot In Australia" theme.

...or 'Favorite Movie That Was Shot in Australia'.

That would work.

Otherwise, I would use a search by popularity and votes using "Australia" as a keyword in the plot box. Then check the list with Wikipedia or read the plots to ensure nothing gets through that just makes reference to Australia, but wasn't set there. (ie. Grease).

Wait a moment here. You have two films in there, that I have caught, that have only one or two scenes or in one of two short shots while all the rest of the film was elsewhere. The majority of “Jaws” was filmed in Martha’s Vinyard, Massachusetts, USA with one or two water scenes filmed on the great reef in Australia. “Independence Day” was even smaller with the filming locations entries say “Establishing shots” which were at the beginning of the film where it shows the aliens landing around the world, and where, after the Americans figure out how to bring down the alien spaceships, a short scene of an Australian saying something about” Damn, it had to be the yanks to figure it out!”, and maybe one more shot of a destroyed spaceship in Australia. The rest of ID was clearly filmed in the USA. Two put these two films on a list with other films that had longer sections that even clearly state that they where in Australia in the film is unfair to these films and your list. As you said in your description”...a salute to movies set in Australia.” “Jaws” and “Independence Day” are not set in Australia as with several others on your list. Urbanmovies is right, you should consider changing the title of this poll if you want to stick with all of these entries on the list you have.
