IMDb User Ratings Page Redesign

IMDb User Ratings Page Redesign

We are excited to announce IMDb’s redesign of User Ratings pages! In the coming days, IMDb will incrementally roll out its redesign for User Rating pages; instead of demographic data details (age and gender) we will now include a top 5 country filter and a ratings by episode heat map.  The redesign follows ongoing site improvements and reflects changes suggested by IMDb customers, as well as our own in-depth research designed to enhance ratings content, discovery, and navigation.

In the coming weeks, we will continue to update IMDb pages throughout the site. We hope you enjoy these latest and upcoming improvements, and thank you for continuing to make IMDb the world’s most trusted source for movie, TV, and entertainment content.

When IMDb was a good site we could see the total number of votes of a movie anywhere: in the movie page, in the search results, etc.
Then when you guys changed the site for worse (always for worse) we only could see it in the advanced title search.

But today it is gone too, and we officially can't see the exact total number of votes of a movie anymore.
For me it is particularly bad, because I maintain for more than ten years a list of classics where a movie have to reach the exact amount of 5000 votes to enter the list.

Why do you do that kind of thing? Why do you not only change but eliminate things that used to make the site so good?
Please, put back the total number of votes, at least in the search results.
Thanks.

Back to the biggest letdown of the redesign ... lack of voter age group statistics.

Most importantly demographics used to let me see whether the picture is appreciated by my own age group or more by another age group (that I don't share similar entertainment values with (eg teens or seniors)). What country the vote comes from is the very least of my considerations ...and to date for myself it has never been a viewing consideration.

Supposedly it is the lack of voters providing the age data.  The age only needs to be a range not a specific date. If voters aren't providing it in their profile ... maybe the age query is buried among too many profile items? Solution ... a quick check box for age range on the actual vote screen ...or... fix the profile settings to use a date range not a specific date. (All of the above comments are equally applicable to gender. Gender lets me distinguish between romances and heavy-action fight movies.)

I know the redesign has been in the works for years .... but it looks like no one wants to revisit the design or admit they missed something. A little bit of thought could fix the issue and not compromise voter privacy (age range and gender of the voter).

A movie with less than 1000 votes will appear with the exact number of ratings.
A movie with more than 1000 votes and less than 1000000 votes will only change the number of ratings ever 1000 votes.
A movie with more than 1000000 votes will only change the number of ratings ever 100000 votes.
It doesn't make any sense: the movies with MORE votes will appear with LESS detailed number of ratings. The movies with LESS votes will appear with MORE detailed number of ratings.
You guys are going completely crazy and illogical.

I am working on a project that requires knowing the exact # of votes a title has. Now you guys are rounding this number to the nearest hundred (e.g. 2103 votes just gets listed as '2.1k'). I do not see any place where the actual # is now being displayed. Why would this be changed?

I see that you are redesigning the "Your Ratings" page.

I was able to see the exact Votes of the title on the old Page for example 16 743, now on the new one I just see 17k, is it possible that we see this 16 743 number on mouse over or somehow?

Once again on the point with the votes, if you do this search the results don't make any sense because they are all 55k

@de_crecy IMDb rounds vote counts over 1,000 and less than 1,000,000 to the nearest 1,000 (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rounding).  If you are seeking titles which round to 55K, the search would be https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?num_votes=54500,55499 and not the one you used above.

If you are need exact vote counts, as we noted earlier in the thread

To your specific point on exact vote counts, one way to still access vote counts is via exporting your ratings or a list containing the titles you wish to analyse in more detail.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the answer Col, I understand that you need space for different devices and responsive design and so on, and I respect that. Export is too much work :) is mouse over not an option?

@Col_Needham could you please comment on my post 3 days ago... essentially

"Is the redesign open to considering changes/adjustments?"

@Dog2011 This was all covered further up the thread when announced a year ago -- please look back through the thread for context.

We are always open to considering changes in the design, but this is not a design consideration as already covered on this thread, sorry.

@Col_Needham thanks for your reply ... I've dug all the way back to the thread start for the demographic change reasons. But I still ask...

Solution ... a quick check box for age range on the actual vote screen ...or... fix the profile settings to use a date range not a specific date.

Could either of these ideas not be implemented?

Thanks for your time and consideration.

I watch the movies that get the most votes. Recently, the "votes" line disappeared from the advanced search. Please bring it back.

Before:

After:

In the IMDb app on iOS, the number of votes is displayed.

Without demographic data, it becomes harder to identify patterns of discrimination or biases within the ratings. Movies featuring women or people of color may receive lower ratings simply because they don't align with the preferences of a dominant demographic group. If certain demographic groups are more active in voting and their preferences dominate the ratings, it could perpetuate unfair evaluations of movies and perpetuate stereotypes. This can lead to a self-reinforcing cycle where movies featuring diverse casts or stories are consistently underrated, discouraging their production and perpetuating the dominance of certain types of content.

Removing demographic data without addressing underlying biases and systemic issues in the film industry and the voting body may inadvertently reinforce the status quo, where movies catering to the preferences of a specific demographic group receive higher ratings and greater visibility, while others are marginalized. Just look at how many people here are saying they choose thier films based on how many votes they have. That just creates a feedback loop with the same movies being pusghed to the front and voted on. There are two movies heavily featuring a woman in the top 20, one is an evil caricature and the other a sexual one (I love Pulp Fiction, but I'm not wrong).

By not acknowledging demographic factors in ratings, IMDb may inadvertently undermine efforts to promote diversity and inclusion in the film industry. Movies with diverse casts or stories may struggle to compete on equal footing if their ratings are disproportionately influenced by a demographic group with different preferences.

As I said in another comment, this is just institutionalising bias hidden behind objectivism.

Is this a space for humans interested in film? If so, why does one demographic groups voice mean more than everyone elses?

When viewing the page of an individual title, in the ratings section it will show the IMDb rating and then a rough number of ratings (something like "8.1K" for example). How do you view the exact number of total ratings? It seems like "8.1K" could mean anything from 8,050 ratings up to 8,199. Is there a way to view the exact number?

Hello guys.

Even if only 1% of users provide gender data, for most popular titles that's statistically significant, many times over.

As far as the sensitivity of the issue goes, it'd be fantastic to include a nonbinary, fluid and other - sections, and at least have any percentage of gendered data. Sure it's a sensitive issue, perhaps the most sensitive ever, but even the most gender-sensitive of people at least have a gender identity (generally speaking), nobody's transcended gender yet - in fact the very weight of the issue points toward the necessity of gender identity as a central part of any self identification.

To erase gender anywhere it is to deface all those to whom it matters, most of all those to whom it matters most.

Right beside that, it's also such a valuable source of data - for several possible uses - personal, social, academic and more. Ratings by (simple) gender for Beauty and the Beast (1991) for example were tremendously illuminating.

Discussion might have died down, but the issue persists. Thanks.

I haven't visited IMDb for about 17 years.

Now I'm back here and I miss the ratings by age as they used to be displayed in the past.

Now I have questions:

  1. Does this information no longer exist or have I missed the link where this information is displayed?
  2. Or is it something else, neither link nor existence, that has been changed?
  3. If it exists: Is there an archive somewhere with the previous age-based ratings?

Thank you very much
