IMDb message boards
Please see the text below from http://www.imdb.com/board/announcement
In addition, we have created a new Get Satisfaction categories for "I Need to Know" to replace the "I Need to Know" message board and "IMDb Poll" to replace the "IMDb Poll" message board. A post on the Contributors Help board explains the migration path from there to the newly renamed Get Satisfaction category "Data Issues & Policy Discussions" (which is an already active community here).
An FAQ on the closure is now available at http://www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?boardsclosurefaq
IMDb Message Boards Announcement
IMDb is the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content. As part of our ongoing effort to continually evaluate and enhance the customer experience on IMDb, we have decided to disable IMDb’s message boards on February 20, 2017. This includes the Private Message system. After in-depth discussion and examination, we have concluded that IMDb’s message boards are no longer providing a positive, useful experience for the vast majority of our more than 250 million monthly users worldwide. The decision to retire a long-standing feature was made only after careful consideration and was based on data and traffic.
Increasingly, IMDb customers have migrated to IMDb’s social media accounts as the primary place they choose to post comments and communicate with IMDb’s editors and one another. IMDb’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/imdb) and official Twitter account (https://twitter.com/imdb) have an audience of more than 10 million engaged fans. IMDb also maintains official accounts on Snapchat (https://www.snapchat.com/add/imdblive), Pinterest (https://www.pinterest.com/imdbofficial/), YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/imdb), and Tumblr (http://imdb.tumblr.com/).
Because IMDb’s message boards continue to be utilized by a small but passionate community of IMDb users, we announced our decision to disable our message boards on February 3, 2017 but will leave them open for two additional weeks so that users will have ample time to archive any message board content they’d like to keep for personal use. During this two-week transition period, which concludes on February 19, 2017, IMDb message board users can exchange contact information with any other board users they would like to remain in communication with (since once we shut down the IMDb message boards, users will no longer be able to send personal messages to one another). We regret any disappointment or frustration IMDb message board users may experience as a result of this decision.
IMDb is passionately committed to providing innovative ways for our hundreds of millions of users to engage and communicate with one another. We will continue to enhance our current offerings and launch new features in 2017 and beyond that will help our customers communicate and express themselves in meaningful ways while leveraging emerging technologies and opportunities.

settling near or above the levels seen in the latter half of 2016.
www.alexa.com/siteinfo/imdb.com
As we were told, the boards accounted for just a small and diminishing fraction
of visitor activity. Those of us who imagined otherwise were mistaken.
The boards closure won't have very much of an impact on overall traffic.

This is to post my displeasure with the elimination of the Message Boards. I read the reasons posted, but this was my biggest reason for coming to IMDB. The rest of the information available in IMDB could be found in Wikipedia and others. In fact, I had very, very little with the User Reviews as they were usually written at a lower intellectual level than Wikipedia, using unprofessional narration.

Ok, now that the message boards are gone i cannot figure out what makes IMDB special? for the past 8 years imdb has been my go to to decide if a movie was worth watching, and it was where i found answers and engaged in conversation about films. If they were removed because they were not popular enough, why cant we be directed to where the conversations ARE??????

Why not bring the comments back but only let IMDbPro users have accounts? If people are paying for an account, they aren't likely to post irresponsibly. There actually were a whole lot of great conversations that happened here.

I understand your feelings, but it's still good to see the bigger picture. IMDb is a database first and message forum second. Its core users are those who keep visiting the site and look for information about films, actors, crew, etc. And those who submit/correct/edit/etc information. The site is as important now as it was before the message forums.
Note: This conversation was created from a reply on: boycotting.

Col Needham only posted on the Contributors Help Board
which is easy to replace with GetSat
but he 'never' visited Title and People Boards
to read and reply to messages there ???
GetSat is not set up for Users to chat about Titles and People
Other many sites that have IMDb Boards now are not easy to find
Users can not find others Users now - No Friends List - No Private Messages
- - -
Many - Most - Posts on GetSat now are for Polls ?
Not for Contributors Help
- - -
So, Many IMDb Users have left the building
protesting the loss of the Boards
WE need Last Active Date on the Profile page
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/
as WE had on
http://www.imdb.com/user/ur1000000/boards/
a few 1,000 Users gone will not bother IMDb much

If IMDb had a Board Administrator

You know... trolls etc.
Someone WE could send PMS with complaints and comments to
this would help with the Boards
and not pester the Boss and Help Desk
IMDb could keep these Boards active
Oh... there IS a Board Administrator

ANNOUNCEMENT: Boards Closure FAQ
by IMDb Staff Member Col Needham
Tue Feb 7 2017 23:34:22
The message board software is based on outdated technology
that is being phased out across all of IMDb,
clearing the way for more innovation for IMDb customers
- - -
So, you now refer to Users as Customers
You started IMDb to provide information about movies
where people can visit to look up this information ... or add more
You did not start this site to Sell movies
That is what Amazon started to do (and other items)
People do not visit IMDb to Buy movies
People visit Amazon for that
People here are not Customers
The fact that the Boards do not offer 10% off on the latest StarWars
is no reason to delete them
As I suggested here before
just hide the Boards for a while and see what happens
You can bring all the messages back when you change your mind
oh and
Did IMDb hire a new accountant ?
One that just wants to make lots of money
and never watches movies or wants to talk about them
Why not hire a new programmer to improve outdated technology ?

The greatest value of the IMDb community is that it is a worldwide community with a shared home and a shared way to communicate .
Perhaps the Message Board software isn't the most updated or nimble. And maybe the manners of the participants are not always impeccable, but the community has been an increasingly active and ever growing one-- in no small part due to the messaging boards.
If you take away the past voices (remove past MBs), you violate the complete historical experience of the site. If you complicate the software too much, you will limit your audience since some countries are behind in computer sophistication.
For IMDb users who want a more "sterile" (some would say "professional") experience, the Message Boards need not be accessed. But for rabid film veterans--and for whole new generations of movie/film enthusiasts, there are many lively discussions to be had via Message Boards--and a vibrant world of information, ideas, cultures, and perspectives to be shared within the interactive IMDb community. How fabulous is that?

You've eliminated one of the key features I, and many others, like about IMDB. The message boards, where viewers could talk about issues, plot lines, actors, reviews, etc in detail. A lot of detail. IF you re doing all the software as your announcement says, you could include the message boards, IMHO. I realize the TROLLS and inappropriate posts are a huge reason you deleted the boards. You left out the good messengers and let the trolls win. Inter active - what is best about IMDB. Well, you just put a huge whole in that part. IF there are reasons were not aware of, ok, but don't leave us in the dark if it was a smaller matter than our satisfaction and discourse. SHame on you

I know there were trolls but I found it useful before deciding to go out to a movie or to get an answer on something I missed. I really have no use it for the site beyond showtimes now.

Looks to me like the polls are getting WAY LESS votes than they used to get before the message boards were shut down.
I wonder if the ads are making way less money for them too...

I loathe change. Especially ill-considered change. The Message Boards enriched my appreciation of two of the best movies of all time: "Barton Fink" and "Angel Heart". I needed help in understanding all the complexity of these movies. Help is needed with almost all of the great Coen brothers' work. Please hoist the developmentally-challenged person who made this decision upon his or her own petard. And bring back the Message Boards immediately.
