Suggestion: Metacritic's Best Films of 2025 (Ready)

'Interested to know the best reviewed movies of the past year? Metacritic makes it easy: it gives movies an aggregate score, from zero to one hundred, based on the weighted average of the most respected critics' reviews. Below are the 2025 movies rated highest by critics, according to their Metacritic scores.  Which of these do you think is the best or would you most like to see?

Link: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls4152326830/

Poll: TBD

NOTE: This list is current as of January 30, 2026. It is based on the two different 2025 lists on Metacritic's website: 1) this list that occasionally updates itself as Metascores change and 2) this list, published January 8, 2026, that does not update itself. (Combining both lists makes it more complete as of January 30.)

I was going to call this finished but since Oscars are being announced in two and a half days, I might as well wait until then (January 22), as I'll be able to update it. Then I really will call it finished. : )

Regarding The Secret Agent: "seeks refuge in a small town"

Recife is not a small town.

@Peter_pbn Oh yikes, that was supposed to be "home town." Thanks for catching that.

FYC:

I'm Still Here has 85, and I'm not sure why it isn't on Metacritic's list

It is on one of their lists for 2025  but it is not on their 2025 list of "30 Best Movies of the Year," even though it has a score of 85, that score hasn't changed in almost a year, and the lowest score on that list is an 83. I think perhaps it's not on that list because they wouldn't normally consider it a 2025 film: using all the criteria that Metacritic usually uses, it is a 2024 film. (Metacritic reports to use the same criteria that IMDb and the Academy use but the date that it gives to 'I'm Still Here' is January 17, 2025, which was the NYC release in the U.S., months after its showings at film festivals.) Despite being a 2024 film if using the calendar that they supposedly use, it is not on either of their 2024 lists. My best guess is that was an oversight and perhaps their remedy was to put it one one of their two lists for 2025. Or they just made another mistake this year.

Anyway, I've gone back and forth a few times with its inclusion on the list I made. The most recent decision I made was not to keep it on this list but to add it to my 2024 list and to request a repush. However, as I was writing this response to your FYC, I remembered that the only reason that I had made that decision was because the list went up to 37 at one point so it seemed to make sense to cut it. However, those other four films have since fallen out of the list because their scores went down. Because I now have space on this list, I think it makes sense to put it back on this list with a brief note because if I add it to the 2024 list with a repush, hardly anyone will see it. Thanks for the suggestion because it jogged my memory. This list has changed several times because the Metascores changed several times, new films appearing on the list as late as January 16 and films falling out even later.
