Live Poll: Favorite Independent Film of the 50s and 60s

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls047719481/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/7xjPAVp7spo/?ref_=po_ho

The most often used definition of an "independent film" is “any film made outside the Hollywood studio system,” with considerations made for such things as budget, source of funds, and distribution. That definition has blurred considerably over the decades, though, and, according to Indie Wire, "you could find any number of films that move fluidly between 'studio' and 'indie' when it comes to one or more of those aspects." Nonetheless, "indies" are an important part of cinema and, even without a perfect definition, most people feel like they "know one when they see one." Although independent films existed as far back 1908, "indie films," as we know them today, had their burgeoning era in the 1950s and 60s. Below are some of the most noteworthy; of these, which is your favorite?

(Although the original ten titles of the list were based on lists of the best and most influential independent movies from magazines such as Rolling Stone, Empire, and Complex, as well as from the American Film Institute, suggestions are welcome. Inclusion criteria will be developed if necessary.)

Where does this list come from???

any film made outside the Hollywood studio system

There were many more films made in 1950s and the 1960s (outside Hollywood). If you put The 400 Blows, you can also put all The French New Wave.

@cinephile With a limit of 35 options, it can't be exhaustive, which is why I say "some of the most notable" but I'm sure I had planned on adding many other films when I first started this list three and a half years ago. I had to stop IMDb rather abruptly, haven't been on in over eight months, and I'm guessing I had forgotten all about it long before. I'd be more than happy to add others if you have any specific suggestions, especially that fit "the most notable" descriptive.

Where the list originated, however, is explained in the introduction on the original post of this thread:

(Although the original ten titles of the list were based on lists of the best and most influential independent movies from magazines such as Rolling StoneEmpire, and Complex, as well as from the American Film Institute, suggestions are welcome. Inclusion criteria will be developed if necessary.)

The eleventh and twelfth movies were suggestions and certainly seem to be among "the most notable."

'Glad to see you haven't lost your sunny disposition. : )

The Endless Summer (1965) would fit bill as a true indepedent film made and distributed outside of the major studios. It created the surf tourism industry, furthered the surf lifestyle and culture and was a significant film in its own right, whose legacy extends to the current day.

@urbanemovies Thanks for the suggestion, Urb. This is the first time I've been on the poll board in about eight months so I have some glitches to work out but as soon as I can post a repush request, I'll aadd this and ask for a repush.

Does anyone have any other suggestions that you'd like me to add before requesting a repush? Indie films that could be considered to be among "the most notable" are welcome. Thank you!
