LIVE POLL: Spirit Awards 2023 — Gender-Neutral Supporting Acting

In August 2022, award host Film Independent made a notable change to its annual Indie Spirit award ceremony format starting with the March 4th, 2023 event. It replaced its four gender-specific lead and supporting film acting categories with more inclusive gender-neutral acting categories. The retooled acting awards will now feature three gender-neutral acting categories focusing on lead, supporting and breakthrough movie performances. A non-binary approach favors recognizing the best acting performances, instead of limiting them to groups based on gender. This should reduce the more egregious nomination snubs by doubling the nominations in the combined categories.

The Spirit Awards joins a growing list of award ceremonies that are embracing non-gendered categories including The Grammys, The Gotham Awards, The British Independent Film Awards, and the MTV Movie & TV Awards. The Spirit awards, which celebrate and promote American-linked independent film productions sought to showcase a broader and better quality assortment of movie performances.
