On 22 January 1917, the first movie to depict tank battles, The Battle of the Ancre and the Advance of the Tanks (1917) was released in theaters in England, just two months after the actual battle occurred. This World War I documentary was the real deal with actual footage of the British Army's new "secret weapon" in battle during the later stages of the Somme campaign. The film served as the follow-up to Kitchener's Great Army in the Battle of the Somme (1916), aka 'The Battle of the Somme' and was commercially and critically successful in its own right. The sequel was even more realistic, giving viewers a powerful sense of being present on the battlefield with its moving images effectively conveying the power of the new weapon. In honor of the 110th anniversary of the first tank battle movie and its subject, The Battle of the Ancre (13–18 November 1916), a poll highlighting the great tank movies that have followed over the past 110 years.
