Poll Suggestion: The Most Inconspicuous Director

Antonio Vivaldi (1678 –1741) was an Italian composer and virtuoso violinist.

Born in Venice, Vivaldi is regarded as one of the greatest composers in the History of Music.

His best-known work is a series of violin concertos known as the Four Seasons (listen here).

After almost two centuries of decline, Vivaldi's music underwent a revival in the early 20th century. Many of Vivaldi's compositions, once thought lost, have been rediscovered — in one case as recently as 2006. His music remains widely popular in the present day.

Surprisingly, his most famous work, The Four Seasons, was unknown during the Classical and Romantic periods of music and Vivaldi himself died in poverty. (Wikipedia)

Which of these "not so hyped", relatively unknown, even famous for not being famous, contemporary directors — still alive or deceased — would you eventually care to know a little bit more of his life's work?

Are these examples of people whose work we've seen yet their names tend not to ring any bells?

I'll give you my real example. I am just the normal guy that like to watch movies /series. I have never heard of Alejandro Jodorowsky. This year, 2021, I watched 3 movies - that I found by chance - that he directed and I said "Wow, amazing". I asked some "supposed" movie-savvy friends and nobody knows of him.

One more thing: the movies are almost 50 years old

I think, I've only seen one of Alejandro Jodorowsky's works, which I saw for the first time only a few years ago, despite it being made decades ago. I only really became familiar with his work by browsing IMDb.

Again, I am no expert, but I think sometimes the guy is good but remains unknown. I wonder the reasons why: too ahead of his time, does not have money or knowledge for marketing, is too controversial, is politically inconvenient, I don't know...

Well, mass media do have a way to keeping some people away from the spotlights.

Recently I watched Milius (2013)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2370224/

one moment that I remember in a nutshell: Milius, George Lucas and Spielberg were classmates. One day, the "the powers that be" asked them what kind of films they wanted to make. Milius answered "movies to make people think"; Lucas/Spielberg answered "movies to make people enjoy". Who became ultra famous?

(something like that)
