Joaquin Phoenix is a very skilled actor so I'll just wait for Joker

Yeah I can't wait either. Hopefully it turns out to be as great as i believe it'll be or better.

cinephile, I'd say at this point cliche morphed into a genre title and elements of said genre will be featured in the movie. Obviously, superhero is more of a character archetype, but in a wider aspect it's also a genre of sorts.

cinephile, I am more than respecting the filmmakers (in fact I'm considering seeing the movie a few times in theatre which is a rare feat for me; that is if the first time will deliver), however I also consider that subgenres such as superhero genre (of which supervillain movie is a subsubgenre) and slasher (which usually has a lot in common with supervillain movies due to virtually indestructible ten-steps-ahead antagonists) undeservedly became ghettos and people still feel the need to distance themselves from both of those, despite formulas are used strongly in many mainstream movies. I respect that their intention was to bring in a multi-genre experience but I don't believe I'm doing any harm pointing out they do use components of certain subgenres I love, such as neo-noir and superhero genre. ;)

A big problem with subgenres is that they often get stuck with less-then-descriptive names. Slashers turn people off despite genre has a lot more to offer than shoddy productions b-to-z grade productions with unimaginative serial murder of teenagers. PsychoAlien, The Terminator, Candyman, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal all share the same basic rhytmical ping-pong-like POV structure which is the core of slasher genre and could be done without a single murder (there are quite a few movies which managed to do that). In case of Superhero genre we're dealing with idea of people rising above the usual with unconventional and impressive feats, which Joker, I'm pretty sure, will fit to a "t" if what we will see for most of the movie will be a villainous side of the formula with a slight hint at possible future offering superhero as a solution.

cinephile, cool! That's the main benefit of discussing anything - it eventually inspires and jumpstarts thinking and creativity!

(I know I'm 8 days left to this comment. Sorry, a whole bunch of notifications were stuck between answered ones and so I missed a few dozens)

Justice League Dark.

And I agree that The Joker can't be considered a Superhero film.

I guess you could call it "Upcoming Comic Book Films"? But you'd have to remove Star Wars.

Several of these films will remain in development hell. Several will just be dropped from the studio schedule on or at preproduction altogether.
