Poll Suggestion: Top 10 Most Voted Documentaries by IMDb Users

A documentary is intended to document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record and be told in various forms of media. Documentarians have a responsibility to be truthful to their vision of the world without intentionally misrepresenting a topic.

Among the top ten most voted documentaries that are IMDb-rated are some of the most popular documentaries, most well-known and most well-regarded documentaries made in the past quarter century.

Which among these movie and television documentaries with the highest number of IMDb votes is your favorite one?

Your question is partly in English and partly in French.

Which documentarie is your favorite? (documentarie is French for documentary)

Your introduction speaks to motion pictures and filmmakers as the scope, but the answer pool only has four movies out of ten total listed options. The others are docu-series, documentary mini-series, or documentary TV series.

A documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to document reality, primarily for the purposes of instruction, education or maintaining a historical record. Documentary filmmakers have a responsibility to be truthful to their vision of the world without intentionally misrepresenting a topic.

The top 10 most voted documentaries are usually, if not some of the best documentaries of all time, at the very least they are the most popular documentaries and are likely to be recognized by most viewers.

Which documentarie is your favorite?

There were fifteen documentaries with a minimum of 73,000 IMDb votes (on the cusp 75k in votes and likely to hit that minimum soon) that I would describe as well-seen. The extra five allows you to list a couple reality entertainment docs, music docs and sports docs and have more variety.

The question was corrected.
For your info, the documentary definition in the intro is a definition made by Bill Nichols, an American film critic and theoretician best known for his pioneering work as founder of the contemporary study of documentary film.
These 10 titles in this poll are defined as documentary genre by IMDb, and are the 10 most voted documentaries by IMDb users.

@GabrielFox

I understand that those two scopes are correct for what you claim they are speaking too. I still doesn't changes the fact you use a narrow definition of the word in the first paragraph, and the broadly define it for the answer pool. Which is odd since you say in the same breath that they "have a responsibility to be truthful to their vision of the world without intentionally misrepresenting a topic." They aren't misspeaking, you're not applying what they are saying within the context that they are saying it. Why does your first paragraph say "A documentary is a non-fictional motion-picture intended to document reality..." , then you use a more broad interpetation of the word to define the scope of your answer pool.

Your first paragraph statement is limited to and true only for documentary films only. The topic of television documentaries is covered separated and although very alike, it is distinguished by the channel it shown in. If you were listing just feature-length movies that are being shown on TV instead of cinemas it would be one thing and just a matter of semantics. I agree documentaries can be in cinemas, on television or on the radio.

But, the options you list in the answer pool are almost all docuseries, which differ in being episodic and having a much longer total running time, and are although technically documentaries too. I think most people commonly use the term "docuseries" or "television documentary" or "documentary series" when referring to them and make a distinction between documentaries, which is commonly used for movies.

I think your introduction needs to be cleaned up, so it is entirely on topic and less confusing, rather than cut-n-pasting from Wikipedia and trying to make a square block fit into a round hole.

To avoid further controversy I eliminated the first paragraph of the introduction.

@GabrielFox I am not saying you should remove it, just adapt it so it applies to the scope you are encompassing (remove the film scope references) and it is  clear and accurate.

Also, you might consider Jackass: The Movie from your answer pool. It is in the documentary genre, does document reality and fits the definition and has over 100,000 IMDb votes. Although, the compilation of stunts, pranks and skits by being staged might not document reality "in spirit" and should be disqualified. Jackass Two is also classified as a documentary on IMDb and has over 81,000 votes too.

I am surprised the popular docuseries that it is based on didn't have a higher vote total, as I would have thought it was more popular than the movie.
