Live Poll: Rule Britannia – The British Empire

Hello, poll forum, another idea for your consideration, feedback welcome, thank you.

The British Empire was composed of the colonies and other territories ruled or administered by the United Kingdom.

At its height, it was the largest empire in history.

By 1913 the British Empire ruled over 412 million people, 23% of the world population at the time, and by 1925 it covered 35,000,000 km2 (13,500,000 sq mi), 24% of the Earth's total land area.

At the peak of its power, it was described as "the empire on which the sun never sets", as the sun was always shining on at least one of its territories.

Mario, you need to either add the countries in the last titles of the list, or delete them for the first so your list looks consistent.

@themoviesmith@Pencho15 @Peter_pbn curiously, the British Empire was not efficient in South America, just one small Guyana...

@mariojacobs They probably arrived too late after Spain and Portugal had taken most of it when they were the great powers.

They later took Belize, but that was problematic as it was supposed to be a part of the New Spain, and my country, Mexico, actually reclaimed part of that land (recognizing other part in favour of Guatemala) after our independence, and for a long while until they became an independent country.

@Pencho15 I'm not good at history, but I can't understand how Spain lost the United States to England.

They - the Spanish lead by Columbus a Italian 1492 - arrived first after all.

Thinking about it, who was the first British in America and in which year? The Mayflower in 1620?

128 years after the Spanish???

@mariojacobs

Actually Spain had most of the territory that form the United States today. The British only had 13 colonies that later formed 13 states in the East coast.

Spain had Florida, and pretty much all the south and west of the United States, they even settled Alaska for a while, but eventually left that zone.

Mexico inherited all that territories after our independence (except Florida that was sold to the US), and it was a terrible XIX century goverment from my country, alongside the wish of the United States to expand taking land either from Mexico or the natives that changed the political geography.

All California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Nevada, Colorado and Utah and big chunks of Oregon, Nebraska and Wyoming were once Spanish and later Mexican.

As for the first English in America, I didn't learned about it but I just looked and it seems it was a 1497 expedition that landed in Canada and claimed that land fro the British crown, altought there was no settlement.

@Pencho15 I checked on Google and the first British in America was William Weston in 1497, so 5 years after the Spanish. This is also the first British expedition to America and it was lead by an Italian, John Cabot.

So, the Spanish also lost Canada to the British and French. Do no ask me how...

I also voted for Gandhi.

@mariojacobs, Hold onto your hat, it gets even wilder than that with the Dutch, French and Irish making historical American (present day USA) settlements long before the ships, Mayflower (Plymouth) or the Lion (Roanoke) arrived to found British North America.

Spanish Canada (West Coast)

French Florida

Dutch North America

The Irish were the first Europeans to discover and settle the Americas, centuries before the Vikings, when they got here in the 6th century.

@mariojacobs, you forgot to add the Falklands to Guyana as being part of British South America. Plus, maybe Trinidad & Tobago too, depending on your classification of what comprises of South America.

British South America

British Central America

Well done, an interesting concept or spin. I was torn between the top three choices, but went with Gandhi (1982) feeling it was the film most about the British Empire.
