1. Your list is not public. And not visible to others.

2. The maximum number of options allowed for a poll is a hard 35. No exceptions. It's a coding issue. And no. They're not going to reconfigure their coding for this one.

3. "Oscars" is a registered trademarked term. Make of it that what you will, considering Amazon owned IMDb is a for-profit entity. And something like this if published might get an unwelcomed cease-and-desist letter from AMPAS's own attorneys.

@Tsarstepan Thankyou. I thought my list was public. I will change the number to 35 and do you think it will still be a problem if I change the wording? Like it's not an actual awards show it's just a silly name.

@Tsarstepan I've changed it to Public Awards. Thankyou.

@thomasmoore5,

Please cut and paste the text below the line into your poll list header. It will make a few corrections and will set-up a back link to the discussion thread when you save your list. I took the liberty of changing the second round cut-off to ten, rather than fifteen. You can change it back if you want, but I think it is better, since it culls the field significantly by 70%, while still advancing any title that has a real chance. Also, on IMDb we use American English over the King's English for publishing as a matter of style, so "favourite" becomes "favorite" here.

I like your thirty-five picks.

@urbanemovies What do you think, now? Hopefully it should be right now.

@urbanemovies I have to say, I didn't actually pick them myself really. I made a spreadsheet and inputted the imdb user rating, rotten tomatoes critics and audience and letterboxd scores of as many films as I could. I did 257 in total. This is the top 35. Moonage daydream does also tie with Hallelujah: Leonard Cohen, A Journey, A Song. These are the highest received films of last year. I hadn't seen anyone do it and I wanted to see what the public would vote for. I already know what my spreadsheet says is number 1.

@thomasmoore5 Whatever you did it worked, I watch a lot a movies and it is a pretty solid list. Also, I like that the list has a bit of an eclectic feel, as some lower voted and non-American titles found their way onto the shortlist too.

@thomasmoore5 It would be great if you could add this explanation on your list, so voters know where did this titles came from.

@Pencho15 I think it would make the description too long. Do you think I can add it in the description here in the discussion without changing the description in the list or will it not work then as a poll?

@thomasmoore5 The problem is that most people won't visit this discussion thread and may think that your list is based on personal taste, which should be avoided.

You could add something quite simple like:

"Films selected based on  IMDb user rating, Rotten Tomatoes critics and audience and Letterboxd scores".

If you want to elaborate further, then you can add it here.

Assuming there is second and final round, I don't think fifteen is the right cut-off based on the results, so far.

I suggested this earlier, now I am of the opinion, it should limited to the top 4-5 voted or a face-off, based on the actual voting distribution. I am not even sure a second round is necessary with a clear number one that has 50% more votes than the second most voted option.

I took the liberty of changing the second round cut-off to ten, rather than fifteen. You can change it back if you want, but I think it is better, since it culls the field significantly by 70%, while still advancing any title that has a real chance.

I understand what you're saying but if you think about it this way, there are still 10 best picture nominees at the oscars, regardless of how few votes the 10th place film gets. We never know but it could be really obvious who the front runners are. My point is, although it's not a prestigious award, I would like to appreciate 15 of the best films with at least a nomination. And, maybe, these awards will become even more popular next year. Also, the poll has only just gone live so, give it some time to see more responses.

@thomasmoore5

I agree there are different types of honor or bragging rights a filmmaker can claim at the Oscars, as not everyone can win (Shortlist, Nominee, Winner). I would disagree with the need for additional rounds, but that is just one person's opinion, but my reasons are as follows:

  • First, the Oscars now use a preferential voting system, which has some unique benefits and should prevent gross injustices.
  • Second, the Oscars having ten, five or three nominees isn't going to change the eventual final outcome.
  • Third, there are so many distinct award ceremonies, other than the Oscars. I think worthy titles each get an opportunity to shine to some degree.
  • Fourth, I think these IMDb voting ratios will stay the same +/- 5% at 100 votes, 500 votes, and 1000 votes. (unless there is ballot-stuffing or bot-involvement, which would invalidate the results)  Statistical sampling has long been proven and allows pollsters to predict U.S. Presidential with insight from less than 1% of the voters.
  • Fifth, the only "X" factor is they are snapshots in time and opinions change over time, so the results can change as result. If there is need for a second poll, it would be better to see how they age or are viewed in retrospective, 10 or 25 years from now, not next week.
  • Sixth, I think it would be better to focus on three distinct poll suggestions, than to have three variations of the same.

You are certainly entitled to disagree and choose how to use your time and what you want to spend it on.

@urbanemovies I agree there are plenty of awards that do appreciate smaller movies, but I haven't really seen a publicly decided awards show give lots of options. It would almost be helpful if the exact results of the shortlisting weren't revealed. I know that isn't and won't be an option. If I chose to use a different platform, apart from not knowing where to start, I wouldn't get many participants. I will keep the rounds as they are, and just so you know, there will only be a second round, which are the nominees. Then, after the nominees rounds have been available for a while, I will announce the list of winners on here as a praise, I think.

Thankyou for your suggestions and your help.

@thomasmoore5,

It look good to me. I agree a better name for your award would help, 1st Public Awards — Best Picture Shortlist.

I think it works better with em dash too. I always liked the word "vox populi", Latin for voice of the people. It's catchy and it says what you mean, I think. I am just spit-balling ideas, if you have a better name use it or if you prefer an alternate formatting. Don't forget to change the name in the question when you settle on an award name.

@thomasmoore5 Anything that has an X, a V, and couple P is going to sound cool.

I like that you explained the award, poll takers will benefit from it, but change "for" to "from" in (awards from the public). The awards are for the filmmakers and their movies, but from the moviegoing public.

@thomasmoore5 I still see a couple minor errors from above. Also, another variation instead of the 1st could be the year, Vox Populi 2023 Awards — Best Picture Shortlist.

@thomasmoore5,

For Your Consideration, the poll suggestion still needs corrections that need to be addressed. I highlighted them in the bold below to make it easier for you to make the edits.
