Poll Suggestion: Oscar Face-Off: Alfred Newman vs John Williams

Alfred Newman has won the most Academy Awards in the Best Original Score category, John Williams has been nominated the most number of times in the same category.

Who do you prefer?

List: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls076197409/

Alfred Newman: 9 awards from 43 nominations.

John Williams: 45 nominations, won 5 of them.

Hi Dibby. I'm so much more familiar with John Williams' work than Newman's and 'Jaws' has to be one of the greatest examples of the importance of the score, not to mention the exquisite scores of Schindler's List and Star Wars, so I'd have to say Williams. It's too bad that today probably few people can recall much of Newman's work.

May I suggest one small edit? (a semi-colon instead of a comma, as is in bold below)
Alfred Newman has won the most Academy Awards in the Best Original Score category; John Williams has been nominated the most number of times in the same category.

John Williams' five Oscar-winning scores would probably make a good face-off. I'm thinking 'Star Wars' would take it but 'Schindler's List' might give it a run for it's money. Or I wonder if there would be a way to quantify the most popular Oscar-winning scores. Hmmm... This suggestion is making me want to listen to a bunch of film scores. :)

Thanks Suzy, I have made the edit.

Also, Newman's 'Best Oscar Winning Score' can be a nice throwback poll. Unfortunately, I haven't heard any of those.

Indeed - and I miss throwback polls.

This'll be tilted in Williams' favor pretty heavily since most people probably haven't listened to very much Alfred Newman. As much as I'd like to go against the grain, there's so much gold in Williams' oeuvre it's hard not to vote for him. So that'd be my vote.

You know John Williams will win, when it comes to popularity, the only possible competitor is Ennio Morricone.

Dibby, have you given any thought to a face-off between Willaims' five winning scores?

Hi Suzy!

That was your idea. I would like to see you make that PS.

John Williams all the way. Larger body of work over a longer period of time.
