Regarding option 2, Male of the Species (1969) is really just an edit of episodes of ITV Saturday Night Theatre (1969), so I don't think it should qualify as two movies or a saga.
FYI, It probably does not apply, but he was in the original and remake movies for 'Get Carter' and 'Sleuth', but in both cases, played a different character the second time around.

I have already seen this situation in other remake movies and TV series in which the actors of the original movies and TV series are invited to play some minor character in the remake.
