Poll Suggestion: Hail Satan

The Exorcist (1973) still tops charts as the scariest movie of all time about soul was possessed by the forces of darkness. But, the Devil himself didn't actually appear in that movie. Since than many movies try to capture demonically but actual physical portrayals of Satan himself are something of a rarity.

None ever with the Devil. Every writers, directors and producers may have different side of view to bring the Lord of Darkness into live. There is horrifying, a child, womanizer and even a gay! Here is list of movies that captured the Devil himself in flesh and bones. Which one do you think the best movie depictions of the Devil?

Like hell he didn’t! What do you think this was supposed to mean? https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070047/... Besides, the devil’s name was Legend in that film — the most common name shouted out by possessed people in exorcisms. The devil trying to make you think it is many entities when it is only one.

I read about it, it was actually a cameo of the Devil. His lieutenant Pazazu did appear in the movie.

No, I have read the book. I still have a copy of it and read several times. I also have a copy of the movie. It is the devil.
Here are quotes from the movie itself:

Demon: I'm not Regan.
Father Karras: Well, then let's introduce ourselves. I'm Damien Karras.
Demon: And I'm the Devil. Now kindly undo these straps.
Father Karras: If you're the Devil, why not make the straps disappear?
Demon: That's much too vulgar a display of power, Karras.

And
Father Karras: There are no experts. You probably know as much about possession than most priests. Look, your daughter doesn't say she's a demon. She says she's the devil himself. And if you've seen as many psychotics as I have, you'd know it's like saying you're Napoleon Bonaparte.

I read more about the demon in The Exorcist, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070047/mediaviewer/rm3191838720, its actually called Pazuzu (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pazuzu_(The_Exorcist))

...was considered the king of the demons of the wind, and the son of the god Hanbi.
He's the son of more evil being, Hanbi, so this could be a reason its not qualify for the list. But, if there is more to this, could be qualify.

The girl angel in The Last Temptation Of Christ.
In that film, the devil appears first as a snake, then as a pillar of fire, https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095497/... , and then as the girl angel https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095497/... .

I have a feeling that the choice of a name for the poll is a bit controversial.

I have been "critical" so many times these days that I hesitated before making the same comment, yep, I think the title doesn't quite work.

But it is catchy. Still it does make you look like your praising the devil. How about “Satan Makes an Appearance” or “Can Satan Act?” ?

There are countless idioms with the word "Devil" or "Satan" or you can make play on words with "demon"... I agree the term is catchy but it all depends on the proper context of its use.

Here are some possibilities

Speaking of the Devil
The Greatest Act the Devil Ever Pulled
They're the Devil in Disguise
One Hell of a Performance
Screen Satans
When Cinema Gives You Demons
...

I personally have no problems with "hail" or "satan", but I like short title for polls, few words that can represent the poll whole. That's why I picked it, its simple and catchy and already been use before.

"Ave Satani", Latinized  version of "Hail Satan" was The Omen original soundtrack that won Oscar for Original Score and the song nominated for Original Song.

But, if its too much, "Speaking of the Devil" is good or how about "Ave Satani"?

Lol, Ave Satani is even worse than Hail Satan in my opinion, sounds eerier and more ominous in Latin. Short titles are good but it can be catchy with 4 or 5 words, Hail Satan is just too serious, it needs a little something to tone it down. Since your poll features many incarnations of the devil and since you want to keep it short and catchy, then how about Hail Satans (in the plural form).

I think I see it like Nikolay. It's - framed diplomatically - strongly controversial. My own p.o.v. is: It could be problematic to offer a poll with such a title on IMDb. It's not that there is "hail" in the title or "satan". But in combination it elevates the feeling, that IMDb could be a hive of satanists. That could be problematic, even if I for myself can cope with the title as ironic. Religious partys could cause trouble. Maybe 'Satan - the man' would be more acceptable. Or ... 'The Impersonated Satan'

Darn it, what I’m thinking! The devil has been played in many films if you just look outside the horror genre!

Crossroads. Named “Scratch” Played by Robert Judd. He is the man with the goatee beard and wearing a black flat broad rimmed hat and who is laughing his ass off in this clip of the guitar dual between the devil’s representative Jack Butler (played by Steve Vai), and Eugene Martone (Played by Ralph Macchio but guitar played by Ry Cooder). Eugene is playing to save his soul and the soul of his friend, Willie Brown (Played by Joe Seneca), from the devil. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=CqdL36V...
Here is his picture: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090888/...

- In “Damn Yankees” the devil is named “Mr. Applegate” and was played by Ray Winston.

- in “Bedazzled” (1967) Peter Cook played the devil then named “George Spiggott” and in the

2000 remake, Elizabeth Hurley played the role as simply as “The Devil”.

- Bill Cosby played “Barney Satan”, AKA, the devil, in “ The Devil And Devlin”.

- “Oh, God, You Devil” George Burns played both roles.

- Heaven Can Wait (1943) (there is more than one film with this title), “His Excellency” (AKA, Satan) is played by Laird Cregar. I love his lines “Sometimes it looks as if the whole world is coming to Hell.” and
“I hope you will not consider me inhospitable if I say, "Sorry, Mr. Van Cleve, but we don't cater to your class of people here. Please make your reservations somewhere else.””

I haven’t seen ether one of the two movies titled “Blood River” but they both look good. Yours looks like it has the devil in it. This one Blood River (1997) has a John Carpenter script that was written for John Wayne to play U.S. Marshal Winston Patrick Culler. But, sadly, John Wayne got sick and passed away. Over a decade latter, Wilford Brimley played the part and Ricky Schroder played the other lead role, Jimmy 'The Kid' Pearls. Oh man, a John Wayne/John Carpenter collaboration? Oh what could have been if John Wayne had lived longer!

The 'Blood River' (2009, Andrew Howard) I suggested is a low budget but intelligent production with an impersonated devil. The devil is impersonated by an actor, so my suggestion may fit to this poll suggestion. Same with 'Ghost Ship' (2002,Gabriel Byrne, Julianna Margulies, etc.).

Actual they all are. The devil has many names. And in “Crossroads” he is called by one his most common names, “Scratch” ,and in the film you can see he is the head devil as when Brown demands to talk to him and not to one of his middlemen. I suggest you learn some of his other names:
http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/devil
http://dare.wisc.edu/survey-results/1... (Am I reading that right?!? “St. Nick”? I have heard of Old Nick as a name for the devil But St. Nick? Santa Claus is Evil? No way. It must mean “Old Nick”,) but it does list Scratch as a name for the devil
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_i...
http://www.markbeast.com/satan/names-...
https://www.powerthesaurus.org/satan That list “Scratch “ as a name for the devil.

Great sugesstions but I keep wondering why people keep considering Mephisto the Devil himself, while he is actually just a high-ranking demon at one's dispposal?.. I have a feeling that some kind of pop-cultural osmosis is at play here, because nowhere in the more popular interpretations of Faust legends is that stated clearly.
