Thanks for all the suggestions, not sure about "Misery" though, it's a house thriller that's for sure but not sure Paul Sheldon felt 'at home' with Annie :)

I actually had the film in mind... I haven't seen it since '95 but I do recall some supernatural elements about it, no?

I added the 'FYC' but are you sure they're set in a house?

Another really good one: Gaslight (1944)

I avoided the 'horror' tag because The Shining would kill this poll... "Wait Until Dark" isn't exactly what I'm looking for because it's about strangers who intrude in an innocent woman's house, I'd rather focus on movies where the villain is either part of the family or the private circle.

Got it, forget almost all my previous suggestions since they deal with home invasions.

But Gaslight remains a good choice. It was an Oscar nominaed film, and without revealing too much, there is a very important husband/wife conflict in it.

I added the Indian film but I'm not sure about the previous, is it really a thriller? IMDb says 'crime / drama' (I expected it to be a comedy)

Hi, ElMo.

Relying on the German definition of the word "thriller" it sure is a thriller. It's not a comedy, it's about a murder that happens in a families house and a father who does everything to cover his wife and kids from law. Great movie! But there are two movies called Drishyam. Be sure to take the right one. I linked it.

In Germany the word thriller means a book, stageplay or movie that causes suspense while watching. Specially the end of the movie is on high suspense. I'm sorry, if that doesn't fit. But until now no one could give me a better explanation. It seems to be an an artificial word.

P.S.: I don't know why the movie is tagged "Mystery". There is no mystery-factor in it.

@RaviNathan:

The Intro of ElMo's list clearly states:

"Which of these domestic thrillers from the last 40 years is your favorite?"

Family Business is 31 years from now, not earlier. But the suspense happens outside domestic, so the movie doesn't qualify, ok.

In Drishyam half of the thrilling suspense moments happen in domestic, but yes - the movie has very much plot outside the families home. If that is not wanted, then the movie does not qualify, right.

Ok, better ones:

The Glass House

Haus des Zorns

Eyes Wide Shut:

"... set at home and dealing with families or couples."

95% does not happen domestically, according to the main characters of cruise & Kidman.

The ballroom-scene is not about a couple or a family. It's just a wild sex party of rich people.

There are different places one could call home, like the flat of the costume trader, or the doctor with the pool table, but these are all locations which are "not at home" for cruise's character.

A different Hush from the one I suggested above is this one from 1998 with Gwyneth Paltrow.

A Mother-in-law/daughter-in-law conflict is at its heart.

I understand better what you intended now, I think Gaslight and the original Rebecca are still good options.
