Well, disowned adaptations of Alan Moore's work are some of the darkest I've seen among superhero flicks. I do think maybe RoboCop, Fant4stic and the fates of Jötunheimr and Asgard in Marvel Cinematic Universe deserve honorable mentions.

@gabriel_gomez_v1f5ssvze4xd,

I like the poll suggestion and like this subgenre in general. I think this be a popular list on IMDb. I general like the selected answer pool, although you might have to explain the Incredibles to me.

MHO, you should consider tweaking the question a bit though.

Which superhero movie is the darkest one?

FYC,

Darkman (1990)

Daredevil (2003)

Super (2010)

I might be a good idea to have consolidated movie option per specific film series, like Batman Returns (1992), The Dark Knight (2008), Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021), and Batman (2022) to represent four of the darker Batman series movies. You can like the other films in the series in the notes, and if polltakers prefer one of those they can vote for the consolidated option instead.

I was also thinking about Darkman, but I wasn't sure about that one, since the protagonist is kind of antiheroic. As for consolidating the darkest of Batman movies, many a time I see the merit of consolidating, but in this case, it doesn't feel right, because some of these pictures are very dark, mean or even bleak in somewhat unique ways. Notably, Batman Returns has multiple disturbing themes and at something of an unusual level.

@jeorj_euler I agree with you. But, the alternatives are either not listing the others at all or having a poll with thirty-five options and ten to fifteen Batman or Batman-related answers on it. None of the choices are perfect, but I prefer the consolidated option with standard bearers for each film series the best option.

We don't need ten to fifteen Batman or Batman-related answers on it. Four is just fine, unless we're accounting for animated material.

@jeorj_euler I agree. I think Gabriel made the right call to list Batman Returns, as the darkest example of the 1989–1997 Batman series.

Batman Returns is most certainly the darkest among Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever and Batman & Robin, all mini-starring Michael Gough and Pat Hingle. The fact of which is part of what I had in mind when expressing my earlier remarks. However, when it comes to the DCEU of DC film adaptations, more than one constituent part of the thing is considerably darker than the majority of the constituent parts, so we might want to consider which ones are in the top quartile, quintile, sextile, septile, octile, nonile or decile of frustrating, grim bleakness. Maybe having the three movies MoS, BvS DoJ and JL at once is pushing the limit, though. The darkest thing in Justice League was only really the vision of an apocalyptic future, and to a lesser extent, the problem of resurrecting somebody who wouldn't've wanted such, so maybe that one can be dropped.

Watchmen probably.

Yeah, that's one of the disowned adaptations of one of Alan Moore's graphic novels. The way that Watchmen presents itself feels a bit more grim and bleak than V for Vendetta, but in a way, it is more upbeat since it has all that awesome music from the 1960s, '70s' and '80s, dispersed throughout.

Give me a Mel Brooks comedy over a stuporhero movie anyday. I'm so bored with all the darkness of modern entertainment. I'm in no way what could be considered a nostalgic person, but all this darkness really makes me yearn for the 60's-80's when things were bright & happy, TV shows were about having a good time, and people could speak without having to pause for effect, after, every, single, word. You are what you eat, and I think everybody consuming this doom and gloom at every outlet is just bringing people down. Sadly though, there is very little choice, when they try and do happy today it comes off as moronic, or worse, when they try and reboot something that was once popular, but the modern writing doesn't have what it takes to reproduce what made it good in the first place.

Lighten up. Life's meant to be enjoyed, not feared.
