Live Poll: Bob Fosse — Choreographer and Director

Bob Fosse (1927 – 1987) was an American actor, choreographer, dancer, and film and stage director.

He directed and choreographed musical works on stage and screen, including the stage musicals How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (1961), Pippin (1972) and Chicago (1975).

He is the only person ever to have won Oscar, Emmy, and Tony awards in the same year (1973).

He was nominated for 4 Oscars, winning Best Director for Cabaret.

Which is your favorite Bob Fosse title?

Mario, I like your poll idea and have a few suggestions.

Visually, I think it looks better as one paragraph. Plus, its going to look even weirder, if it goes live as poll, because after the first break, the spacing increases on the second paragraph on. I also would drop the list of titles in the intro since 1) they are going to be in answer pool and 2) other than Chicago they are not the ones he is most known for. I think the question could be strengthened by defining the scope and by being clear in what you are asking (what qualifies as a Bob Roses title?). Which movie or TV title that features contributions from the multi-faceted Bob Fosse is your favorite?

Lastly, I think you are missing some notable titles that feature his work. If it were my poll, I would include every movie or TV special (excluding TV episodes) that he choreographed (11), that he acted in (8), directed (7), wrote (4), produced (1) and danced in (6). A lot of these titles he did several of these things, so I would rank your list after by votes and delete any duplicate listed titles. You can even justify the inclusion of even posthumous titles, if it features his work (ie choreography or writings) and he was credited. https://www.imdb.com/filmosearch/?sort=num_votes&explore=title_type&role=nm0002080&ref_=nm_flmg_shw_pop_ql

FYC,

Robert 'Bob' Fosse (1927 – 1987) was an American actor, choreographer, dancer, director, writer, and producer. He is best known for his directing and choreography of musical works for the stage and the big screen. Fosse is a four-time Oscar nominee and Oscar-winning director for Cabaret in 1973. Currently, he still holds the distinction of being the only person ever to have won an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony award in the same year.

@urbanemovies thank you again for your feedbacks. They are very useful and insightful. Due to lack of time, I now keep the concept/text the simpler I can, but always providing a little bit of compact and interesting information which I get from Wikipedia mostly, after a quick research. By the way, the most voted polls, those that got thousands of interactions, are always one-liners. Some examples from Poll Watch:

Poll: Best Movie to Have Been the IMDb Top 250 #1

Only five movies have ever topped the IMDb Top 250. Which of them is the best? e

@mariojacobs

@mariojacobs I think we both like finding out the backstory and then want to share it, because we find it interesting. While some people may appreciate that detail and value it, I think they are the minority. I believe that I don't want to make the choice for them. Those who were not interested in those details, could just opt not to read the introduction and jump down to the question (the reason why my questions are bolded). On the other hand, you can't read an interesting introduction if it is not there.

But, you are 100% right. The most successful polls are the ones without an introduction. Also, the simpler themes and the ones that don't require a lot of thought are more fun for most people. I think you might learn from that and limit the number of polls with introductions. I would focus on asking a little longer, more detailed question that is stronger. You can always hide a factoid or interesting list in a hyperlink (as sort of an easter egg), like they do online.

I think better titles are part of a successful poll too. They are what gets people to click on your poll. So, just like in movies, it is okay to start with a temporary or working title to start. But, they always take a crack at coming up with something better that will put butts in the seats before they release the movie. You don't have to settle for the first idea that popped into your head.

Bottomline: I think you can make it easier for yourself as your poll suggestions will require fewer edits and they will be more appealing to most people. If you follow three simple rules: No introductions, Stronger Questions, Better Titles. There are exceptions, but these guidelines have value. I think they are worth a try, to see if they simplify the process for you, and produce stronger and more successful polls.
