Poll Suggestion: Black and White in Post-70s Films

Even after color in films became the norm, some outstanding movies still choose to employ the black and white technique.

Which of the following films are most successful due to their application of B&W cinematography?

I'm with you on that one but Schindler's List and Manhattan are also a tie

Hi Jared and welcome to the poll board. : )

'Good list of some very good films but did you have any inclusion criteria? It's not absolutely necessary but it usually helps, especially with a short list. For example, I noticed that, except for the last two on. the list, each film has a Metacritic score above 60 and an IMDb rating of at least 7.0.
If you want to add more movies that fit those guidelines, here's a data-search that might help:
https://www.imdb.com/search/title?title_type=feature&release_date=1980-01-01,2018-12-31&user...
Most of the films don't qualify because they're mostly in color but there are some that do fit, like 'Persepolis' and 'Raging Bull.'

You certainly do not have to do it this way, of course: it's your poll. That's just an example of a way to choose guidelines and find more movies, if you want more.

'Well done poll! : )

Hi rubyfruit76,

Thanks for your voicing your thoughts on my poll, I will admit it is somewhat an incomplete/inconclusive list and I am open to suggestions. Some movies are only partially black-and-white, but this still fits my criteria for the poll. I tried to think of all movies that employed black-and-white, even if it were for just for the smallest amount of time, and not just the ones that were made entirely in this style.

Thank you!

There's also a few other noteworthy ones such as The Elephant Man (1980), Stranger Than Paradise (1984), Down by Law (1986), Rumble Fish (1983), Wings of Desire (1987) and She's Gotta Have It (1986).

I was also wondering whether Manhattan (1979) should be on the list since it's just on the tail end of the 70s.

I found a similar poll with B&W films from the 80s which you might want to give a look- https://www.imdb.com/poll/pCvucZm_pAg/?ref_=tt_po_q4

The fact that "American History X" in BW makes it in a strange way even bloodier!

Sorry, but I think making a movie black and white when it doesn't have to be is just silly.  :)  It give the film a depressing feeling; even if that's what they're going for it just makes it worse.
