Live Poll: Best Satanic Movie

A Satanic film is a subgenre of horror film and at times other film genres, that involves the Devil as a concept or a character. Common themes/characters in Satanic films include the Antichrist, demonic possession, exorcism, and witchcraft.

Movies that have at least 10,000 votes and an IMDb rating of at least 6.0 are considered.

Which among these satanic movies is your favorite?

Please consider the 1941 classic "All That Money Can Buy."  It is a version of the old "Devil and Daniel Webster" short story.

No, it doesn't have your minimum number of votes, BUT CLASSICS RARELY DO!!!!!!!

Once again a great suggestion but can't add it, as I said in the previous poll post it would be unfair to other movies which didn't make the cut.

@CyrilMartin Please tell me how it is unfair to the latest fanboy film.

I was a regular contributer here for years.  I was one of the first five with 100 live polls.  I was one of the first whose polls got 100,000 votes.  I contributed the 1000th and 2000th polls (and 2001, which was about the film 2001).  IN THE OLD DAYS, WE ALL RECOGNIZED THAT EXCEPTIONS HAD TO BE MADE FOR OLDER FILMS AND OLDER SERIES.  Ask any of the other old timers.

I was the old timer on here who specialized in classic films and tv series.  The others turned to me specifically when they wanted their list to cover a broader range of time and to include the older stuff.

If I allow the exception of your suggestion then in the future there will be questions about why I didn't include films that they consider classics. I had 47 options in the list before trimming it down to 27(35 max. rule) set the criteria such that the list won't be seen as pushing favoritism or just including a particular film.

Guess I gotta watch it.  As for the suggestion, the list comprises only feature films.

This is a good list with a lot of great films already included.

Here is one additional suggestion:

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)

I would have had a bunch of other suggestions of movies involving satanic cults. However, I interpret the parameters of your list description to only include movies where Satan himself (and not another devil or demon) actually affects the plot (whether or not he appears on screen). So, a movie about a satanic cult that doesn't imply as a plot element that Satan actually exists would not qualify for your list.

Thank you. Added The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021), thanks for the suggestion.

I think the movies about satanic cults come under Satanism, found this in wiki https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Films_about_Satanism

@CyrilMartin Well in that case, please consider adding some of the titles from this keyword:

https://www.imdb.com/search/keyword/?keywords=satanic-cult&ref_=fn_kw_kw_1

In particular these titles:

Hereditary (2018)

Suspiria (I) (2018)

Suspiria (1977)

The Babysitter (I) (2017)

The House of the Devil (2009)

The Babysitter is about Satanic cults (comes under Satanism) and added the rest. Thanks for the suggestions.

I'm planning to make a poll on Satanism films. Will be considering titles from the keyword.

@CyrilMartin Wait, I think I may have misunderstood. I now realize you were distinguishing between what you refer to as "Satanic" movies (films focusing on Satan) and "Satanism" movies (films focusing on Satanic cults). That is what I thought was your intention in the first place, but when you first mentioned "Satanism" I didn't realize you were actually agreeing with me that "Satanism" is not within the scope of your poll.

If I now have it correct, then you probably will want to remove the following films that I suggested. Each of these is about a Satanic cult (or a similar cult), but the devil himself does not make an appearance in any of these films from what I recall. You should save these for your future poll on Satanism:

Hereditary (2018)

Suspiria (1977)

The House of the Devil (2009)

Curse of the Demon (1957)

My bad, I thought you were suggesting movies that include both satan and satanic cults. Well, all these misunderstandings gave us a clearer idea of Satanic movies and many suggestions on the future list of Satanism movies.

I have not seen either of these movies so I can't vouch for them, but they meet your criteria and would likely balance out the diversity of the list in terms of older movies.

Curse of the Demon (1957)

Heaven Can Wait (1943)

Edit: your list currently includes this title twice:

Burnt Offerings (1976)

'Army of the dead'. If not then 'The Evil Dead'. Also 'Demons 2' would fit.

@Breumaster From memory, I think most of the movies you mentioned are about demons and spirits generally, rather than focused on Satan.

That would also count for The Exorcist, Sleepy Hollow, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Conjuring 3, which are already on the list. And maybe also for some other movies on the list. I didn't see that Dracula movies.

@Breumaster I think you're probably right about all those movies. It's interesting to consider just how many movies that we assume are about the devil (even with "devil" in the title) are actually about peripheral demons rather than Lucifer himself.

If you check my earlier comments, I am partly to blame here for misunderstanding the conversation--at one point I thought satanic cult movies are acceptable for this list/poll even if they don't include Satan.

@Breumaster Regarding The Exorcist specifically, here is what the novelist said:

Blatty also corrected the misapprehension, common at the time, that the spirit possessing Regan was Satan, noting that it was explicitly named as Pazuzu in the novel, and implied strongly in the film to be him. "True, Regan tells Fr. Karras, 'And I'm the devil.'" he conceded. "But what constrains us to believe her? Believe that and you perforce must believe everything the demon has to say, including the accusation that Fr. Merrin is a homosexual."

To clear all confusion (me included) as stated in the wiki, Satanic movies involve the Devil as a concept or a character. Common themes/characters in Satanic films include the Antichrist, demonic possession, exorcism, and witchcraft.

Here the Devil is Satan(Lucifer, Beelzebub, Mephistopheles, Iblis). So as @keyword_expert rightly concluded the list is about the movies where Satan is involved and affects the plot.

The list will be comprised of films that include Antichrist, demonic possession of Satan, exorcism of Satan, and witchcraft.

The Exorcism of Emily Rose includes Lucifer as one of the demons so it qualifies on the list.

Removed Sleepy Hollow and Conjuring 3, thanks for the corrections.

The novelist, but not the movie. In the movie it was a demon. But I would like to agree with CyrilMartin's former list, because The Devil, Satan, Beelzebub, Lucifer or the demons are the (in-)equal (?) strong counterpart to God, Jesus, The Holy Spirit and the non-fallen angels in the Bible. So Both sites are consisting of divided power, based on the powers of single superior powers that created all of them, they are subordinated parts of God and the Snake. All of them are deputies for the one or the other site. Angels and demons. So demons are the deputies of Satan, Lucifer, who ever. They lead to the same site. I think the demonic movies are dealing with Satan as well, because they stand for him. They are from the same source of (negative) power.

@Breumaster Well in that case, movies like Conjuring 3 should go back on the list as well, because like The Exorcist, they also involve demons.

There are a whole bunch of movies involving demonic possession, but I understood this list to only include possession by Satan himself.

That's totally ok for me. The subject is so deeply and widely considered in the whole humankind, in many religions and philosophical aspects, that - inevitably - different views are coming up. And the title forces the direction of the mind to the bad overlord, the supreme evil.

This article might give you some additional ideas for films that include the Devil as a character.

https://www.pastemagazine.com/movies/satan/giving-the-devil-his-due-satans-25-best-appearance/

In particular, these two films appear to qualify:

Legend (1985)

Needful Things (1993)

FYC:

it's a comedy, but since the devil is the main character you might want to consider Bedazzled

Also:

The Dark and the Wicked

In the plot of The Dark and the Wicked, I don't think it is ever definitively established whether the possessions are by the Devil or just a demon.
