[Poll] Nominations for the Worst Movie of All Time (Round 1)

I am currently attempting to compile a list of some of the worst movies of all time. So now's your chance to help me out and get in on the action :)

The current list is here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls042839302/
(It starts empty)

Please provide what you believe to be the worst movie you have ever seen, and I will add it to the list, subject to the following submission guidelines:

1. The title must be a film
2. The title must not be a short (requires 45+ minutes runtime)
3. Please provide a reason for why you believe it deserves a nomination
4. Nominations can be independent of overall IMDB ratings - just because a movie is rated low or high overall does not mean you cannot nominate it.
5. Please limit your nominations to a maximum of 3 titles.

Once I've allowed sufficient time for people to make their suggestions I'll create a further poll (i.e. Round 2) whereby you'll be asked to vote from the list to narrow it down. After that, depending on the amount of titles, additional rounds (and corresponding lists) may be added until we can pinpoint the ultimate worst movie ever made.

Have fun :D

Wow, this is one of the best, perhaps even the best, debut poll suggestion I've seen. Great job! You can make the link back to this thread clickable like this:

[Link=https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/-poll-nominations-for-the-worst-movie-of-all-time-round-1]

And if in the future you'd like a word to link to something (as in, "you can click here"), you can do it like this:

[Link=https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/-poll-nominations-for-the-worst-movie-of-all-time-round-1]here[/link]

I'll have to think more about the question before answering.

Thanks for the information and your kind words, I'll format the links in the list now.

And yeah, don't rush, I'll make sure there's plenty of time for suggestions before moving onto the next round (I will probably post warnings here as we get nearer the closing time) - but for now its a work in progress and the finals date is TBA. So take your time :)

List links have been updated, thanks - I had to include " to make it work, but otherwise it should be fine now. :)

Okay I'll re-word it if you think that's a better idea. Cheers.

If you (ACT_1) and Albstein can provide me with your IMDB profile links I'll put them in the thanks section - at the moment those just link to your get-satisfaction profiles, because I don't know where to find your IMDB profiles.

Note: If someone has already nominated your movie there is no need to nominate it again. You will be able to vote for it in a subsequent round, but feel free to discuss any reasons you have for agreeing or disagreeing with any nomination in this current thread.

Richard Shepherd,

Thank for your poll suggestion and thank you for having a properly functioning discussion link in your list.

My IMDb User Name is dan_dassow
My user ID is https://www.imdb.com/user/ur0127678/

I would like to nominate two films:

Leonard Part 6
(1987)
The commercial for this film were truly annoying. When I watch the film on TV, the commercials provided welcome relief to an unfunny and cloying film.

C.H.U.D. (1984)
A nauseating take on incoherence.

It's a custom tracking link to the discussion, normally bit.ly formats MDB links as imdb.to/whatever but it didn't work for this one so I formatted the second part of the link. It just directs to the original page but allows me to access some analytic information, such as what country the viewers of the page are from etc... that way if I advertise the poll on Twitter etc I can tell where the traffic is coming from and what source is working best.  If this is bad practice I'll remove it and replace it with a direct link.

Richard Shepherd,

It's probably not a good idea to use compressed links. Unfortunately, they are frequently abused by spammers and people distributing malware. These kind of links are also likely to trigger Get Satisfaction's spam filter.

With your permission, I will remove these links from the posts in this thread.

141 Messages

 •

3.4K Points

Yeah you can go ahead and remove them, it's not a big deal to me, they link directly to this thread so you could replace them with the direct link if you like (where appropriate). I originally only used them for readability purposes mainly, but now I know about the whole [link] syntax it's not needed.

Cheers.

Yes, the first time I saw it was during a late night program on public television where they would screen b-grade movies. I've seen lots of bad movies but Manos is by far the absolute worst I've seen!

4.4K Messages

I guess I hate it because it's new; the Manos makers were trying (although terribly) and at least there weren't any scenes of hearing mountain lions or giving 50 percent discounts.  :)

I still have to say Birdemic is in my top 5 of the worst movies I've ever seen. It's absolutely painful to watch and doesn't even get hilariously bad until the last 30 minutes where they end up fending the birds off with coat hangers.

Oh, I beg to differ... Rod's insufferable-ness, Natalie's Victoria's Secret job... Rod's awful friend... round numbers... Birdemic is the standard for all B movies to live by.  Manos is the close second, with Torgo legs, bad dubbing, and annoying soundtrack.  :)

NarniaisAwesome not as well-versed with MST3K, unfortunately: it was never a thing where I am and catching up with it requires abundance of free time. I'll get to it, eventually. :) I think I caught "nightmare fuel" on TV Tropes, which had some role in popularizing the term.

Richard Shepherd narrowing that list down to three... Well, I guess Skazka. Est (2012), Violent Shit (1989) (because good grief, even for an intended low-key effort that is inexcusable level, one of the few movies I can't finish watching properly. I guess I should try to do that this Halloween season as a part of a marathon as I'm interested in 1989 and 1990 in particular) and After Last Season (2009). I keep wondering how that last one remains under the radar for so long.

Richard Shepherd, if by profile link you mean my user page, then here it is. Glad to be of any help!

Not so fun fact: I also have an IMDb name page, apart from user one. It's a bit of a mess and some of the titles in my filmography are not far off from this poll's subject. :)

141 Messages

By profile link I did mean your user page yes - thank you. I'll update the list now so you are credited properly. This is the default approach I am taking to nomination credits. If you would prefer a different link, such as your name page or GS page, then just let me know and I'll adjust it accordingly.

141 Messages

 •

3.4K Points

ACT_1: As far as I can tell the link for where you are credited in the list (in the special thanks at the top) currently points to your GS page. i.e. https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/people/act_1

It has been like this for sometime now, If this is not what you wanted, please let me know and I'll adjust it as requested.

If you decide to nominate some films for the list itself I'm happy to credit your nominations to whatever profile page you like (which I assume is your GS page from your above post).

141 Messages

 •

3.4K Points

Okay cool, as long as I know you are satisfied with the way you are credited on the list. :)

If someone requests a GS link I'll be happy to do it that way, otherwise I'll generally default to their IMDB profile link, unless I cannot find it and they do not provide it. In which case I'll be leaving it unlinked for a while to allow them time to give me their link, if still no answer I'll link to their GS profile (because I can find that easily).

Hope that clears some things up for you, and anybody else wondering the same thing.

It has always hurt me to see Santa Claus (1959) in a list of bad movies, and I have always tried to defend this misunderstood Mexican movie. I grew with it and while its far from great, it doesn't deserve all the bad reviews as most of them are based on missunderstanding our christmas traditions, and also on a terrible dubbed version to english that change things. https://www.imdb.com/review/rw2537885/?ref_=tt_urv

There are many much worst Mexican films that should be trashed much more than this film.

Mangunsong Song - I don't understand your post, sorry.

Pencho - It's interesting to see how cultural values reflect on a person's critique of a film, thanks for taking the time to voice your opinion. Even if Santa Claus (1959) does end up on this list (it hasn't so far) in subsequent rounds I'll be asking people to vote to narrow things down, so never fear - many movies that are on this initial list will not make the finals :)

NarniaisAwesome, I strongly disagree with like half of those movies being contenders for worst: many of them were misunderstood for years and there are a lot of respected efforts here, like Carnival of Souls (1962). I respect your opinion, but it's genuinely hard to see it on the same list as Eegah or The Beast of Yucca Flats. I have a feeling that despite you're into b-movies you've yet to reach the bottom of no return I did already, or it might just be me being way more forgiving with movies that try, because I've seen a lot that don't bother with that. Mediocrity is arguably far worse then being cheesy.

4.4K Messages

Well, partly I was giving a list to Richard; I wasn't sure what kind of list he had in mind!  But for my top ones I chose some that were like, 'Did the director not even look at this!?!'  With films like Carnival of Souls and even Plan 9, you could at least tell someone was trying.  But Guy From Harlem?  I know the bar has been lowered, but... that's no reason for what goes on there.  :D

Also, I think maybe part of our difference is that I don't watch 'slasher' movies and you have, and probably the cheap ones of those are waaaay worse than say Birdemic, because it's just non-stop pointless gore with no plot.  Is that true?

Champion

NarniaisAwesome I've seen a lot of slashers and I adore that genre, yes. I must admit, reputation for them being pointless gorefests is not entirely undeserved, but the core of a slasher is what I call "ping-pong structure", where POV shifts from killer to victim. It amuses me how genre successfully makes audience playing chess with themselves. That structure can be used to a great success in any genre, but slashers just mastered it somehow so it's what I'm looking for when I watch them. I must admit, it's interesting to find slashers which use little to no gore or even no kills and yet somehow achieve the needed effect.

In order to illustrate my point in 5 minutes: here's E-Type's music video (which I also added to IMDb, btw) for "Angels Crying". Cheesy eurodance song and dance moves aside it still impresses me with how it managed to replicate the tension from Friday the 13th (1980) (it is practically a remake of it) with no gore whatsoever. In fact most murders are implied and yet, effect is pretty much the same and is surprisingly unsettling. My favorite shot from that music video is when you see killer's disembodied pair of legs when he (she?) appears in front of victim. It's a classic slasher touch which messes your perception a bit and can make killer appear as an unstoppable machine, while in fact anyone can look as menacing if you only see the shoes and pants.

In my opinion, 'horror without gore' is very admirable, and somehow an even truer sign of talent.

I have 2 options that you could consider; Jack and Jill (2011) with Adam Sandler, is an ode to incoherence and stupidity with the worst performances I could have seen and Adam makes them doubles (Lamentably appears Al pacino, which is my favorite actors) Fantastic Four (2015) I can only say that it is terrible.
I really do not come across many movies that I dislike to the point of considering them as such, because I am very cautious when choosing haha.

Oh, good. My third option is Armageddon by Michael Bay, It's too ridiculous, this is a movie where logic was not used and they did not even try to give coherence to the story, it seems more like a movie Made by children who have no idea what they are talking about

NarniaisAwesome Nah, I've seen so much worse then Fan4stic. Movie was ridiculously botched by last-minute decisions, but it's clear in some scenes that if Josh Trank's vision was preserved better it would have been a fresh take, at least. I really loved some Cronenberg-like scenes in the movie and while it might seem out of place when adapting these characters, I've never seen that touch applied to their predicament before. It has a lot in common with Scanners (1981) which, while better received, still was never a critical darling. The problem is that visuals of the botched attempt at Fantastic Four were dated at the time of the release, while 1981 full-on practical effort still holds up well and never had the same kind of limitation.

Head full of Honey (2014). This movie exploits Alzheimer's as a resource of whacky "comedy". Between hysteria and lowest attempts at tear-jerking, there is no space for nuance. Dieter Hallervorden, a great versatile actor, is humiliated in the lead role. Til Schweiger acts and directs, and it is hard to say which job he's worse at (even basic aspects like editing look amateurish). In a delusion of grandeur, he likes to consider himself the most important living German filmmaker and an international star. At least the second illusion was thrashed when the American remake with Nick Nolte failed spectacularly, both at the box office and with the critics.

Fifty Shades Darker (2017). This movie is disgusting. I wish it was for the sex scenes, but they are rather prudish. There is neither any daring display of sexuality nor a hint of eroticism. No, what I find despicable about the movie is exemplified in the scene where the main characters go to a fancy restaurant and giggle at a nervous waiter - and except for one brief moment from afar we only ever see his torso, as in a Warner Bros. cartoon. The Fifty Shades movies fetishize a world of money, luxury and power in the hollowest way and bear a contempt for anything and anyone that does not fit into it.

I think there are two kinds of "worst" movies:
- the so-bad-they're-good
- the so-bad-they're-bad

And we can say that the latter films are worse than the former... a film like Plan 9 From Outer Space doesn't have any pretension to be a masterpiece and it's a B-movie providing what people accept  from B-movies and it is still more forgivable than a film that takes itself seriously and still does something as despicable as manipulating an audience or insulting its intelligence.

I guess the poll is about the movies we can truly say "I hate its guts", so maybe you should be careful not to mix them with the same old movies who are always nominated among the worst but that we, movie lovers, enjoy a little for their campy value and because they're entertaining in a laughable way.

Thank you for bringing this up EIM. Indeed, the flavour of this poll is more about the latter option as you so rightly point out. I don't mind if people want to nominate films that are 'so bad you love love them' but ideally, as you suggest, the main idea here is to find a movie so appalling that every moment it takes of your time feels like a little bit of your soul being ripped away :)

5.2K Messages

No problem, it's your poll of course, but I think there's more than a subtle nuance between the two categories, it's basically the same fine line between the lovable loser or the poor schmuck and the truly despicable person (as far as our perceptions go)

My nominee is The Weird World of LSD (1967)

Not only is a film with the lowest imaginable production values, with no one that has the right to be called an actor or even something remotely similar to a plot. It is also an offensive film that tries to keep people away from LSD, but does this with lies, missinformation and fear which is pretty much the worst way to tackle a problem.

I haven't seen The Weird World of LSD in its entirety but I have seen bits and pieces of it - to me its nothing more than a propaganda film - and that is usually an umbrella term for categorically bad films - not just because of the quality but because of the content.

As you suggest misinformation and fear are devices of control but are not rational solutions to real world problems.

I've amended the list to match your above replacement request.

It's not a problem to switch things around/change your mind at this stage - that's part of the idea of having multiple rounds to the nominations. Nothing is locked in at the moment, but later, in future rounds things will be more tight - but don't worry, there'll be ample time and notifications before that happens - so feel free to keep revising your suggestions as often as you like until then. :)

Sounds good to me.

FYI: Exactly when Round 2 opens (following this rounds closure) will be entirely dependent on the level of activity of this round. In other words, when people seem to have stopped nominating/discussing for a few days I'll post a notice saying this round will end in a few days after that - allowing for those sitting on the fence to still have a chance.

I realize some people might only check in to GS once a week (or less) so I want the majority of the community to be exposed to the opportunity to nominate - but at some point the time will come where we must move on. :)

I appreciate your suggestion and will take it into consideration.

At this point in time, as of Round 1 of the nominations - the element of overall rating on IMDB is independent of this list - that's part of the theme behind it - because of this, currently, the list order will just be in the order I receive the nominations.

Ratings may come into play in later rounds, such as in tie-breaker scenarios, more will become clear in the future when I announce Round 2.

For readability purposes however, I think your suggestion may be warranted, and I may reorder the list in the near future. For the immediate time however things will not be changed.

Your feedback is still greatly appreciated and I look forward to hearing more from you, and anyone else :)

I'm still weighing up my options on my own nominations here. There are a lot of bad movies out there, so many come to mind. I have a few I'm tossing around in my head and when I've decided on the three I'll add them to the list and announce it here. In the meantime - keep those suggestions rolling in! :)

Richard,
I forgot to let you know that you can watch RiffTraxes for free on Shout! Factory: http://www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/rifftrax
And there's some on Amazon Prime (you can sign for a 30 day free trial of that if you don't have it already)

Oh tyvm! I'll check that out :)

I'm a prime member but I'm in Australia so some of the content available is different for me, for example I can't watch IMDB's Freedive - but I'll check, thanks for the link :D

I'll be back with my nominations. This is my wheelhouse. Terrible movies that make you eyes weep clotted blood and your soul begs you to self-extinguish into sweet sweet oblivion so you will never again experience such horrid filmmaking.

Tsar knows bad movies because he knows RiffTrax (or vice versa!)!  :D  Not claiming to be an expert, but I know, too!  Who can answer the following questions: (excluding Tsar, because he probably knows)

The film Monster Dog is from what year?

Who is the famous star in it?

Also in it is actor Emilio Linder, who was also in what classic MST3K film?

Bonus: The MST3K film is known best the title credited in the movie, but what is the film's "other" title?
