I have already warned Metacritic that John Ford's profile is empty.

Some people that almost made the list:

Bélar Tarr (Only 2 films rated on Metacritic)

Masaki Kobayashi (Only 2 films rated on Metacritic)

Jean-Luc Godard

Hirokazu Koreeda

Alfonso Cuarón

Martin Scorsese

Céline Sciamma

Yeah, except Federico Fellini is on the list.

Speaking of Fellini (and related to my post below), his score is artificially low. Four of his films are listed with Metascores above 80 but because of two other films listed, his average dropped considerably:

I didn't do the arithmetic for all of Scorsese's movies but I suspect he could be a similar case: he simply appears in or is a producer of so many movies with scores but his average Metascore for his "Unscorsese Scorseses" is 80.3.)

Fellini is still eligible for the list, I only counted the average of the films he directed:

87 I Vitelloni [re-release]

83 Juliet of the Spirits (re-release)

91

95 La Dolce Vita

On Excel, for Scorsese's average, I get 79.93

The average for Fellini seems to be 89, but you put 91.50.

Great idea and I love Metacritic but when I was doing a poll on filmmakers and Metascores (different than yours), I noticed something: the director's assigned score wasn't always just for the films that he, she, or they made. For example, if a director had a small acting part in a poorly reviewed movie, it was factored into their average score. Occasionally, and surprisingly, the information wasn't even correct: For example, director and writer Sean Baker has his four films listed but also two movies that he had nothing to do with, one of which was released when he was ten years old. His Metascore should be a 77.25 but because two other movies are listed, his score drops to a 73. He wouldn't qualify anyway but it's an example I remember from what I found: some directors had artificially low scores and presumably some had artificially high scores, although I'd say the former is a bigger concern here. I don't think that ruins the poll, which is good, but maybe it justifies a brief note.

'Have only looked at a few but similar or other problems apply to:

Marielle Heller qualifies

Yorgos Lanthimos probably does (his page is empty; I didn't look up each of  his movies)

Fellini qualifies (note above)

Scorsese I'm guessing may very well (note above)

(Wow, Céline Sciamma is a hair below at 79.75)

I added Marielle Geller

Yorgos Lanthimos' average is 75.33

Fellini was already on the list, I just made a mistake in my, "Some people that almost made the list" post.

As I said above, Scorsese's average is 79.93

@Peter_pbn

I'm gonna split the poll into two polls. It is unfair old vs. young on Metacritic.

1) Older films have considerably fewer reviews.

2) There are fewer pre-1999 films on Metacritic.

Consequently, in the first list, I'm only gonna list directors that directed most of their films before 1999. If they have directed films during or after 1999 (like Kubrick) I'm still gonna count those films in their average because otherwise, the average wouldn't remain accurate.
