Live Poll: Why on Earth Did I Make This Movie?

Even the most brilliant director always makes (at least) one bad movie in his/her career.

Which movie with an IMDb rating less than 6 is most embarrassing for its otherwise famous director?

List: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls064010284/

i would have to say oliver stone with 'alexander', simply because it seemed like a 'trendy' waste of time for him...

and he usually never follows trends except his own...

A famous director does not = a good or celebrated director. I recommend revising this: "Which movie with an IMDb rating less than 6 is most embarrassing for its otherwise famous director?"

Many of these directors have more than one film that qualifies for this list - Spy Kids 4, and the majority of Shyamalan's movies.

I also don't think it's fair to include films that are the first or second film the director ever made. Often they don't have any choice about what their first film will be (in terms of picking script, actors, etc.) and no one can be expected to make a great film on their first few times out...

Thanks, Jen. I changed famous director to celebrated director in the description.

The list is composed of directors that already made one or more highly acclaimed/awarded movie(s) before making the bad movie:

Shyamalan: already made The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable
Ridley Scott: already made Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise
John Carpenter: already made The Thing and Assault on Precinct 13
Francis Ford Coppola: already made The Godfather & Apocalypse Now
Oliver Stone: already made Platoon, Wall Street, JFK, Nixon
Steven Spielberg: already made Jaws and Close Encounters
...

Maybe I could add this information in the comment box for each option?

Only in the case of Michael Mann and James Cameron I took a movie from their earlier work. Should I take them out?

Suggestions for adding another director that would qualify for this poll?

Thank you for being so responsive to my suggestions.

I would remove Mann and Cameron.

I agree with Urbane that the star requirement should be lower. Maybe 5.0 or lower? But then, I think that would keep a lot of directors off the list. I think the worst films of A-list directors will inherently be rated above about 5.5 by virtue of their high visibility and large fan bases.  For example, here are some films I think could/should be on this list and their ratings on IMDB:

Deadly Friend (Wes Craven) - 5.5
The Ladykillers (Coen Bros) - 6.2 or Intolerable Cruelty - 6.3
Mimic (del Toro) - 5.9
Random Hearts (Sydney Pollack) - 5.1
Girl 6 (Spike Lee) - 5.0 - rated even lower than She Hate Me...and that he has two such bad films kind of throws a monkey wrench into the works...
Ready to War (Robert Altman) - 5.0
Pirates (Polanski) - 6.1
The Wiz (Sidney Lumet) - 5.3

Here's one uber-low one (I guess it takes Madonna to rate only 3.6 stars):
Swept Away (Guy Ritchie) - 3.6

And also:
North (Rob Reiner) - 4.4

I was thinking the same that 5.5 would be a fair number too., Sort of like the straight A student who gets a  single C, it is like their version of an F. You may not get every director, but there would be enough brand name directors to have a misfire. You could have an interesting poll at that threshold and get a "I can't believe it" response from poll takers that X director was responsible. Plus, it would be interesting to see which director made the biggest flop of the bunch.

I actually like a lot of these films. But, I would not call a 6.0 a sub-par effort or even a 5.0. They are just average movies and as good as most of the movies being released today. I personally liked and rated G.I. Jane, Alexander,1941, Planet of the Apes, The Fan, Survival of the Dead, The Keep all sixes and would be proud to call them my own.

The only two obvious choices seem to be The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D and Piranha Part Two: The Spawning. Both choices I think fit the spirit of the poll, rather than being a little bit below the quality of their normal high quality work. I would think both would solicit the response,"Why on Earth Did I Make This Movie? " and the directors would personally call the films embarrassment. In my humble opinion, I would lower the standard and search harder for titles that truly, fit the bill.

I would add Stanley Kubrick's Fear and Desire. It is far below the masterwork level of everything Kubrick has done. He was so embarrassed by it, once he found a little success, he tried to wipe its existence from the face of the planet, calling it "like a child's drawing on a fridge". He spent decades trying to locate and destroy every copy of it, nearly achieving the result; http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045758/trivia.

Thanks a lot for the very useful inputs. I reshuffled the list based on the contributions received.

The threshold for "bad movie" has been lowered to 5.5 (previously 6).

Changes to the list:

- Removed: Michael Mann, James Cameron, Stanley Kubrick, Tim Burton, Steven Spielberg, Tony Scott
- Added: Wes Craven, Sydney Pollack, Robert Altman, Roland Emmerich, James Wong, John Landis

Any other suggestions?

Good idea Leavey, and a nice continuation from your previous "Why Did I Take This Role" poll:

Fyc:
Hook (1991) directed by Steven Spielberg

Thanks, Kyle. I agree with you that 'Hook' is not exactly Spielberg's best movie, but its IMDb rating (6.7) is higher than the cut-off rating of 5.5 for this list.

i hate to see robert altman on the list, even though i do admit 'pret-a-porter' wasn't exactly his best effort...

however...having said that, a 'not exactly best effort' from altman is still better than 90% of the movies out there...

Well, Robert Altman doesn't have to be ashamed to be in this list, quite on the contrary. As I wrote in the description, these are all brilliant directors who made one bad (or less brilliant) movie in their career.

'Good poll and I really like that it has a related poll, as well. The titles are great, too.

I would change just one tiny little thing: You have two movies on the list that have ratings of 5.5 but the intro says "less than 5.5," so I'd change it to what I put in bold below:

Which movie with an IMDb rating of 5.5 or lower is most embarrassing for its otherwise celebrated director?

Thanks for the feedback. I will do a re-push to incorporate the modified wording.

Someone finally removed Francis Ford Coppolla's name from Supernova (2000) from the list of directors.  They're now saying he had an uncredited part of the editing team.   That's kind of cute.  I wonder how much of that is historical revisionism and how much is actual clarification of his actual role.
