Live Poll: Which Is the Most Interesting Depiction of AI Behavior Over Time?

Intro:

Over the past 100 years, visions of thinking machines have become increasingly sophisticated. From eerie, clumsy robots to ultra-intelligent AIs in more recent films, filmmakers have imagined futures that once seemed far-fetched but may eventually become reality. The same is true of the communicators in Star Trek, which are the predecessors of today's mobile phones.

Which film offered the most fascinating depiction of AI for its time (1927–2026)? Slideshow
(Please note: The movies are sorted in order of the time-line)

Please report your personal candidate .

Suggestions:

Heading for 35 options per list. Please try to pick the most interesting. My most important concern is that people pick strong characters, which are connoted to AI by the majority of the audience. It's about the portrayal of AI behavior. That's an urgent point. There shouldn't be characters, just because they are AI based. The characters should be interesting bescause of how they are programmed as an AI

Thank you for suggesting mario.I've put him on the list, even though his AI seems to be very rudimentary.

I'm not sure I understand your time parameters.

You said "AI-characters from begin of last decade until now" but you have characters from the 1980's, 1990's and even 1970's and the 1960's

FYC (All from 2010 to date):

Gary from Superman

H.E.R.B.I.E. from The Fantastic Four: First Steps

Vision from Avengers: Age of Ultron

Joi from Blade Runner 2049

The Entity from Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning

Roz from The Wild Robot

Judge Maddox from Mercy

K-2SO from Rogue One

I wonder about myself. I could have told you last year, I guess. The criterion is rubish!
I guess I altered the idea while developing it. My most important concern is that people pick strong characters, which are connoted to AI by the majority of the audience. I've changed the criterion here in the forum. I've put your picks on the list. Their pretty cool. My fav of your pick is Judge Maddox. She was cool! I have to rework the list a little. I'll post here, when I've done. Thank you, Pencho! Nice you pointed it out. It's a pitty, when such lists are burried under a pile and no one thinks about them. Great you did! :D

What's the Most Interesting Portrayal of Artificial Intelligence Behavior in Movies?

My top choice would be "Thermostellar Bomb #20" (one of Dark Star's Artificial Intelligence Exponential Thermostellar Devices, bombs which can talk and think) in John Carpenter's feature directorial debut, Dark Star (1974) by a wide margin. If you haven't seen it and don't mind the spoiler, check out the plot summary on en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Star_(film)

In my book, the far most interesting AI characters and AI-driven plots are from older movies, when screenwriters really let their imaginations run wild or when the possibilities seemed more endless. I could see an objective top three that could include a combination of these five new suggestions (posted below), plus those older movies already listed: HAL-9000 in '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968) and Gunslinger, a model 404/406 android in 'Westworld' (1973) for the most interesting portrayal of an artificial intelligence behavior in movies.

All of these occurred when artificial intelligence was in its infancy, as "The term 'artificial intelligence' was coined in 1956 during a workshop at Dartmouth College organized by John McCarthy and others. This event is widely considered the birth of AI as a field of research."

"The Maschinenmensch" (Machine-Human) in Fritz Lang's film, Metropolis (1927)

rm3042766850 or https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0017136/mediaviewer/rm2381160449/

"Colossus & Guardian" in Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) [originally released as Colossus] These two artificial intelligences become linked and act in concert with each other, essentially acting as one.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0064177/mediaviewer/rm3310494977/

"Thermostellar Bomb #20" (one of Dark Star's Artificial Intelligence Exponential Thermostellar Devices, bombs which can talk and think) in Dark Star (1974)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0069945/mediaviewer/rm536614656/

"W.O.P.R.," aka War Operation Plan Response supercomputer in War Games (1983), an artificial intelligence which simulates nuclear war scenarios and ultimately confuses them with reality, nearly triggering World War III

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0086567/mediaviewer/rm847182082/

"Robby the Robot", a mechanical servant that Morbius has designed, built, and programmed in Forbidden Planet (1956)

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049223/mediaviewer/rm3660290305/

Robby exhibits artificial intelligence, but has a distinct personality that at times exhibits a dry wit.

FYC, other notable and well-seen AI robots that you might consider for your Top 35 AI's:

  1. Kelly LeBrock as Lisa in 'Weird Science' (1985)
  2. Rutger Hauer as Roy, a Nexus-6 combat model Replicant in 'Blade Runner' (1982)
  3. Russell Crowe as Sid 6.7 in 'Virtuosity' (1995)
  4. Vin Diesel as The Iron Giant in 'The Iron Giant' (1999)
  5. Alan Tudyk as Sonny, an Nestor class 5 robot in 'I, Robot' (2004) [alternative choice] * The Robotic company USR also built a Artificial Intelligence supercomputer, which was named VIKI. This highly advanced and efficient supercomputer, Virtual Interactive Kinetic Intelligence — or simply VIKI for short.
  6. Warwick Davis as Marvin in 'The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' (2005)
  7. Sophie Thatcher as Iris in 'Companion' (2025)

@Breumaster

FYC, I would argue against the two choices made for the Alien franchise, I think there are far more interesting AI characters and AI driven plotlines in the 'Alien' franchise.

https://www.imdb.com/poll/_6WRhhjVF8w/

My top three Alien franchise AIs would all be synethics with Ash placing fifth.

  1. Bishop played by Lance Henriksen in Aliens (1986) and Alien³ (1992)
  2. David played by Michael Fassbender in Prometheus (2012) and Alien: Covenant (2017)
  3. Andy played by David Jonsson in Alien: Romulus (2024)

I've put most of your suggestions on the list. Just Dark Star not. I first have to take a look, if there are is a better image for it.

I've extended the franchise-rule to three per franchise and took  Call from Alien: Resurrection on board for the other Alien AIs, I#ll start a new list. Mayb it get's stuffed as well as thist list. :D

Maybe, I'll also transfere some of these from this list to the other. So won't be angry when the disappear. They don't disappear, but move to Part II ;D

@Breumaster just an idea, how about dividing the pools by genre, century or some other divisible factor, so it seems less random?

I usually split them into Classic 20th century (1901- 2000) and Contemporary 21st century (2001- ?) depictions when I get too many for a single poll suggestion. It usually balances out, even though you are comparing 100 years of movies with 25 years, because most of the highly voted options are more recent.

It allows you compare movies from similar eras with like production values. Plus, it expands the answer pool by allowing you to feature more characters from the same franchise across both polls (without it seeming like overload) or even the same character from the original and the reboot in both pools.

That makes sense. I've splitted into 2 lists (<2000 and >2000)). But since I did, I think I could also return to one big list. I guess I'll do.

I've cut the second list and re-edited the intro. I think it looks good now. What do you think?

@Breumaster I think the poll looks great and has a lot strong answer options, although maybe a little too Alien franchise heavy with five choices. I like the picture you choose of a space-walking Lt. Doolittle having an extenstential debate with Bomb #20 trying to convince the bomb to return to the ship's bomb bay.

Although, I would be remiss in not saying that I thought the depth of the number interesting answers and AI plotlines does justify multiple polls. I posted the potential answer pools below based on popularity, release date and IMDb vote totals. There is a one or two line plot summary for each movie that usually mention s the AI twist.
