Live Poll: Viva Las Vegas!

Here's a sad timely tribute to a little (well, not so little) light in the middle of the desert, a pulse beating at the rhythm of slot machines, kitschy designs and catchy music, a spirit that crystallizes whatever fascinates us in America... some narrow-minded people call it Sin City, but we'd rather call it Fun City and most definitely, the Capital of Entertainment.

Yet this is a rather melancholic time, and today, in homage to the Las Vegas victims, here's a simple question: which of these movies primarily set in Las Vegas is your favorite?

(if not mainly set in Vegas, the most memorable part of the film must take place there)

Using the name of the city as a "key word" is misleading, on that basis, you get movies like "The Godfather" and I can't add it just because it has one scene in the city.

(By the way, this is not an opportunistic suggestion, it's been a long time since I wanted to suggest a Vegas-related poll, with that title, but I've always thought it's been done before, I was surprised not to find a poll... then I figured it would be a good idea to pay a tribute to one of the most cinematically appealing cities in the world)

Still, what sad news, this world is really twisted, similar events occurred in France and Canada in the same span of time, you gotta wonder in which world we live...

"Still, what sad news, this world is really twisted, similar events occurred in France and Canada in the same span of time, you gotta wonder in which world we live..."

It has always been a world filled with tragedies and heartbreak. There is always someone who goes out of his/her way to kill and destroy, for reasons of ideology, greed, or malicious amusement.

When I hear of Las Vegas, I am always reminded of Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel. Siegel was the one who invested organized crime's funding into Las Vegas and its casinos. He was the driving force in the development of the Las Vegas Strip. In many ways Vegas was his dream project. And he was murdered in 1947, long before his investments started returning a profit.

Siegel's own casino, Flamingo Las Vegas, is still around 70 years following his death. I am not certain who owns it now.

I don't particularly care for the fictional character "Moe Green" from The Godfather. Mario Puzo created Green as a fictionalized version of Siegel, but the character seems so watered down that I find him rather forgettable.

Whenever I hear the name Vegas, I have that music in mind, I often find myself singing that tune (though I only know the "Viva Las Vegas" part) no wonder it was used in the ending of both Vegas-themed Friends and Simpsons episode.

Horrific indeed, but the most horrific aspect is to get used to these horrific news... it's like there's no part of the world that is spared, wherever you might find fun, people having a good time or even kids, any ******** can make a carnage.

I never really liked the "Viva Las Vegas" song. It was a hit song from a 1964 film musical, but the lyrics sound like a hymn to gambling addiction.

"How I wish that there were more
Than the twenty-four hours in the day
'Cause even if there were forty more
I wouldn't sleep a minute away
Oh, there's black jack and poker and the roulette wheel
A fortune won and lost on every deal
All you need's a strong heart and a nerve of steel"

...
"If it costs me my very last dime
If I wind up broke up well
I'll always remember that I had a swingin' time
I'm gonna give it everything I've got
Lady luck please let the dice stay hot
Let me shoot a seven with every shot"

As for killers targeting entertainment events, well their purpose is to find large crowds and to spread fear. Entertainment events are ideal for this goal. Remember the Istanbul nightclub shooting (January 1, 2017)?  There were about 600 people gathered in the nightclub to celebrate the New Year. Then a terrorist entered with an AK-47 rifle and started firing. Result: 39 people killed, 70 injured, and a city with a population of 15 million people suddenly living in fear of the next attack. Mission accomplished for the terrorist.

Perhaps Last Vegas deserves a spot, or 3000 Miles to Graceland.
