Billy Mitchell and Chuck Yeager, both received medals for achievements on par with those four Medal of Honor recipients. They have been included due to their medal award by an act of Congress and stated medal's equivalent status and ambiguity of award. During the Vietnam War, Colonel Hambleton's aircraft is shot down over enemy territory and a frantic rescue operation ensues. For their heroic actions in rescuing Hambleton behind front lines, Lt. Thomas R. Norris was recommended for and received the Medal of Honor, Norris readily supported the nomination of Petty Officer Third Class Nguyen Van Kiet for the Navy Cross, the highest award that the navy can give to a foreign national.Nguyen was the only South Vietnamese Naval member awarded the Navy Cross during the Vietnam War

John Van Etten (Nail32) received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his part in this rescue. Hambleton received the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (United States) and a Purple Heart for his actions during this mission. Hundreds of individuals from dozens of units from the Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guardassisted in Hambleton's rescue,and participants in the operation received a total of 234 individual medals.

The four chaplains were lieutenants in the United States Army: Rev. George L. Fox (Methodist), Rabbi Alexander D. Goode (Jewish), Rev. Clark V. Poling (Reformed Church in America) and Fr. John P. Washington (Roman Catholic). In late 1942, the chaplains were transferred to Camp Myles Standish in Taunton, Massachusetts, and attended Chaplains School at Harvard University. In January 1943, the chaplains embarked on board the SS Dorchester, which was transporting over 900 soldiers to the United Kingdom via Greenland.

On February 2, 1943, the German submarine U-223 spotted the convoy on the move and closed with the ships, firing a torpedo which struck the Dorchester shortly after midnight. Hundreds of men packed the decks of the rapidly sinking ship and scrambled for the lifeboats. Several of the lifeboats had been damaged and the four chaplains began to organize frightened soldiers. They distributed life jackets from a locker; when the supply of life jackets ran out, each of the chaplains gave theirs to other soldiers. When the last lifeboats were away, the chaplains prayed with those unable to escape the sinking ship. Twenty-seven minutes after the torpedo struck, the Dorchester disappeared below the waves with 672 men still aboard.

In 1957, The American Legion, at their 39th National Convention in Atlantic City, passed a resolution asking Congress to award the Medal of Honor to the Four Chaplains however, criteria for the Medal of Honor included "combat with the enemy." The special medal — intended to have the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor was approved by the Senate in 1958,and by the House in 1960.

Gold Lifesaving Medal

The rescue of the survivors of the shipwrecked Pendleton is considered one of the most daring rescues of the United States Coast Guard. All four crew of CG-36500 were awarded the Coast Guard's Gold Lifesaving Medal (rather than just the captain, the typical treatment). Coxswain Bernard C. Webber, EN3 Andrew Fitzgerald; SN Richard Livesey; and SN Irving Maske, U.S. Coast Guard, stationed at Coast Guard life boat station Chatham, Massachusetts, for the rescue of 32 crewmen of the T2 tanker SS Pendleton on February 18, 1952. This rescue is depicted in the 2016 movie The Finest Hours.

Disastrous final mission of the Space Shuttle Challenger mission to carry out several lessons from space and observe Halley's Comet. A structural failure during its ascent phase 73 seconds after launch on January 28 from Kennedy Space Center Launch Complex 39 killed all seven crew members – Commander Dick Scobee, Pilot Michael J. Smith, Mission Specialists Ellison S. Onizuka, Judith A. Resnik and Ronald E. McNair, and Payload Specialists Gregory Jarvis and Christa McAuliffe—and destroyed the orbiter. The Rogers Commission determined that the cause of the destruction was due to the failure of an O-ring seal on the starboard Solid Rocket Booster (SRB).The entire crew was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

He received the Medal for actions on Oct. 8, 1918, in which he attacked a German machine gun nest by himself. He and his small squad were credited with taking 32 machine guns, killing 28 German soldiers and capturing 132 others during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in France.

They received the Medal for unhesitatingly volunteering to be inserted into a Somalian battlefield hot-spot to protect a critically wounded downed crew of four. The sniper team fought their way to the crash site of the helicopter. Once there, they pulled the crew members from the aircraft and maintained a protective perimeter. Both snipers placed themselves in exposed positions to protect the crew, killing upwards of 50 Somalian combatants. Eventually, they were fatally wounded when they ran out of ammunition and couldn't keep the enemy at bay.

He received the Medal for voluntarily flying 22 missions under intense enemy fire. He retired from the battlefield only after all possible service had been rendered to the Infantry during the Battle of Ia Drang. His actions provided much needed ammunition and evacuation of the wounded during a critical period in the battle.

Lone Survivor (2013) Real-Life MoH recipient: Michael Murphy as played by Taylor Kitsch in Lone Survivor (2013)
He received the Medal for leadership of a Navy SEAL team assigned to locate a high-level anti-coalition militia leader in Afghanistan. Murphy placed himself in mortal danger to successfully achieve radio contact with headquarters and get assistance for his team. As a result, he sacrificed himself to save his men by placing himself in an exposed position to make radio contact.

He received the Medal for leadership and bravery. Murphy remained alone at his post, after ordering his men to retreat to positions in the woods. He stood atop a flaming tank destroyer during the Battle of Holtzwihr for over an hour. Murphy manned a .50 caliber machine gun, killing or wounding fifty Germans from an advancing tank column and foot soldiers. While under a barrage of enemy fire aimed directly at his position, he directed artillery fire via field radio. Despite being wounded several times, Murphy beat back the enemy advance and turned the tide of the battle.

The Pacific (2010) Real-Life MoH recipient: Sgt. John Basilone as played by Jon Seda in The Pacific (2010)
He received the Medal for heroism and conspicuous gallantry on 24 and 25 October 1942 in the Solomon Islands. Basilone fought valiantly and repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire. He replaced, repaired, re-supplied and personally manned the machine guns positions he commanded. Thereby, resulting in the virtual annihilation of a Japanese regiment in the Guadalcanal Campaign.

He received the Medal for acts of bravery on 1 July, 1898 at Santiago, Cuba. Lieutenant Colonel Roosevelt, in total disregard for his personal safety led a desperate and gallant charge up San Juan Hill with only five other men in the forefront. His leadership and valor rallied his forces and quickly turned the tide in the Battle for San Juan Hill.

The Lost Battalion (2001 TV Movie) Real-Life MoH recipient: Maj. Charles White Whittlesey as played by Ricky Schroder in The Lost Battalion (2001)He received the Medal for his leadership of the "Lost Battalion" during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Major Whittlesey, outright refused a written proposition to surrender in the face of superior numbers of the enemy. His battalion at the time was out of rations, suffered battalion losses of 50 percent of his men (killed or wounded) and was completely surrounded by the enemy.

He received the Medal for daring heroism and great tenacity in holding his position on the Little Round Top. He repulsed repeated assaults and carried the advance position on the Great Round Top during the Battle of Gettysburg.

He received the Medal for leadership at the risk of his life in landing with the first wave of the forces assaulting Utah beach. His presence at the very front of the attack, coupled with his complete unconcern for being under heavy fire, both inspired the troops to heights of enthusiasm and self-sacrifice. Gen. Roosevelt contributed substantially to the successful establishment of a beachhead in enemy-held France on D-Day.

Glory (1989) Real-Life MoH recipient: William Carney as played by loosely-based, composite characters in Glory (1989)
He received the Medal for his courage in saving the 54th Massachusetts American flag from falling and planting it on the fort's parapet during the Second Battle of Fort Wagner. When the troops fell back, Carney retrieved the flag under fierce fire, despite being severely wounded. *Carney's Medal of Honor act is depicted in film's final scene by two actors and some artistic license is taken with the facts.

He received the Medal for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty in action against the enemy. Lt. Rickenbacker, while on voluntary patrol, spotted seven enemy planes, five Fokkers and two Halberstadts. Disregarding the odds against him, he dived on them and shot down two enemy planes.

He received the Medal for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. Stockdale was singled out by his captors as the leader responsible for the P.O.W.'s resistance to interrogation and refusal to participate in propaganda exploitation. Sensing a coming renewed effort of the part of his captors, Stockdale resolved to make himself a symbol of resistance. He deliberately self-inflicted a near-mortal wound to demonstrate to his captors of his willingness to give up his life, rather than capitulate. The North Vietnamese were left convinced of his indomitable spirit and the futility of their efforts. As a result, the captors use of excessive harassment and torture toward all of the P.O.W.s abated.

He received the Medal for "gallantry in action" while serving as a civilian scout for the 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Platte River, Nebraska. Cody's medal was later rescinded, due to his status as a civilian scout in the employ of the U.S. Army, but restored at a later date.

He received the Medal for heroic courage and skill as a navigator, at the risk of his life, during his nonstop flight in his airplane, the "Spirit of St. Louis," from New York City to Paris, France, 20-21 May 1927. Congress awarded Lindbergh the Medal of Honor on December 14, 1927, despite the fact that it was almost always awarded for heroism in combat.

He received the Medal for leadership and defense of the Philippine Islands against a tremendously superior enemy force in men and arms. MacArthur was noted for his utter disregard of personal danger under heavy fire and aerial bombardment and his calm judgment in each crisis. MacArthur's leadership inspired his troops, galvanized the spirit of resistance of the Filipino people and confirmed the faith of the American people in the ability to win the war.

He received the Medal for outstanding pioneer service and foresight in the field of American military aviation. Although, his medal was conferred by an act of Congress, there is some debate as to which medal he was awarded: the Medal of Honor or a Congressional Gold Medal. However, the Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs Medal of Honor Recipients: 1863-1978 report lists him as a Medal of Honor recipient.

Webber, coxswain of Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat CG 36500 from Station Chatham, and his crew, consisting of Engineman Third Class Andrew Fitzgerald, Seaman Richard Livesey, and Seaman Ervin Maske, rescued the crew from Pendleton's stern section, with Pendleton broken in half. Webber maneuvered the 36-footer under Pendleton's stern with expert skill as the tanker's crew, trapped in the stern section, abandoned the remains of their ship on a Jacob's ladder. One by one, the men jumped into the water and then were pulled into the lifeboat. Webber and his crew saved 32 of the 41 Pendleton crewmen. Webber, Fitzgerald, Livesey, and Maske were awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for their heroic actions.
