Live Poll: The Oscar for Best Female Director

In 2023, the Oscar nominees for Best Director were men.

If there was an award for the best female director, which of these Oscar eligible films directed by women do you think should win?

Solid List. Great Poll Idea

FYC if you aren't already doing it, I would keep tabs on Alice Diop's Saint Omer to make the list's 2K threshold soon. It just had a limited North American release about a month ago and needs only 50 votes a day over the next ten days to exceed that threshold. The film was Oscar shortlisted for Best International film in 2023 and is an Oscar-eligible film. It will have the second highest Metacritic score (91) and ninth highest IMDb user rating (7.0) on your list once its meets your threshold requirement.

Further, the film has accumulated 17 wins, 40 nominations and climbing awards. Diop has received these other notable nominations, wins and yet to be decided potential wins:

  • César [Winner] Best First Film (Meilleur premier film), Alice Diop
  • Directors Guild of America, USA (2023), DGA Award [Nominee], Outstanding Directorial Achievement in First-Time Feature Film, Alice Diop
  • European Film Awards (2022), European Film Award [Nominee]European Director, Alice Diop
  • Film Independent Spirit Awards (2023z), Independent Spirit Award [Nominee], Best International Film, Alice Diop
  • National Board of Review, USA (2022), NBR Award [Winner], Top Five International Film
  • Palm Springs International Film Festival (2023), Directors to Watch [Winner], Alice Diop and FIPRESCI Prize [Winner], Best Foreign Language Film, Alice Diop
  • Toronto Film Critics Association Awards (2023), TFCA Award [Winner], Best International Feature
  • Venice Film Festival (2022), Edipo Re Award (Università degli Studi di Padova e ResInt Rete dell'Economia,  Sociale Internazionale) [Winner], Alice Diop
  • Luigi De Laurentiis Award [Winner], Best Debut Film,, Alice Diop
  • Silver Lion [Winner], Grand Jury Prize, Alice Diop
  • Golden Lion [Nominee] Best Film, Alice Diop

I edited the list to set the minimum to 3,000 votes before I saw your post, but I will keep an eye out.

Here is a list of contenders:

@Peter_pbn I don't disagee with your approach. The tricky part is the influx of Oscars worthy titles that get an LA and NYC runs in late December to be Oscar-eligible and  therefore are classified as 2022 movies on IMDb. Subsequently, they don't get wider distributions until into January/February/March or later to take advantage of the buzz they get during award season. As a result, they may not get the votes to qualify for the pool. I would expected more than a few to fall into that situation, despite their Oscar discussion worthiness.

FYI, Goldderby.com handicapped the Oscar Best Director race back in mid-2022 with its top 70 directors (incl. women) most likely to get a Best Director Oscar nomination. I am not sure all these films were declared Oscars eligible. But, it might be worth a look. They declared Nikyatu Jusu for Nanny and Alice Diop for St. Omer the 3rd and 4th most likely females to secure Best Director noms, after Sarah Polley for Women Talking  and Gina Prince-Bythewood for The Woman King. There quite a few females directors who made the list.

Not eligible, but Jacquelyn Mills should win for Geographies of Solitude.

I'm actually quite mad that the genius of this film has not yet been recognized. It deserved to be in Sight and Sound's Top 100. According to me, it is only the second post 2010 film that would have been worthy of that honor, the first being The Tree of Life.
