Live Poll: The Best '60s Western Movie

The 1960s was a time of cowboys and gunfighters as audiences were given some of the best stories ever to take place amidst the American Old West. Simply put, the 1960s was THE decade for the Western. Can you really argue that given the all-star list below?

Which of these '60s Western movies will you most likely remember?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls024335463/

I recommend this alignment for the Top 5:

Once Upon a Time in the West
The Magnificent Seven (if only for the score and the cast, it's got to be in the first images)
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
The Wild Bunch (a cinematic staple)
or
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (John Ford's last masterpiece, and well, a John Ford movie)

And colors-wise, it'll look pretty.... I like the contrasting blue of Peckinpah's film and the bright yellow of "Seven".

I wouldn't include Yojinbo though although I get your point. I'm a purist on these matters and I like AFI's definition of Western: a genre of films set in the American West that embodies the spirit, the struggle, and the demise of the new frontier.

Hey ElM,

You're right about not including Yojimbo - it contradicts the 'American West' point made in the introduction (and AFI definition), so I won't include it.

As for the ordering of the top 5, I may not change it just yet as I think it would be important to include all 3 of Leone's Dollars films in there, so I may keep the current ordering in tact. I'll deliberate on this one...

Okay, as they say in French, I'll defend my steak here.

First of all, Leone's movies are classics among the classics but the two highest spots belong to Once Upon a Time in the West and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, the other movies from the 'Dollars' trilogy are far from being minor but they're overshadowed by the other two.

I'm not saying that it's the current alignment that will create a Leone bias but just that it seems overloaded with Leone's movie while the 60's saw the rise of the Revisionist Western sub-genre, movies that demystified the West, showing the limits of the frontier spirit and its sacrifice at the altar of modernity, politics and "progress".Two standout examples are Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Wild Bunch.

Liberty Valance is perhaps Ford's closest movie to revisionism and certainly his last masterpiece, but The Magnificent Seven is just the last hurrah of classic Western cinema and one of the most iconic Western scores.

My argument was also on a stylish level because Leone's posters are great but look quite all the same when you align them, the movies I just listed look terrific and I'm picturing a great line-up for the homepage.

Sorry to insist, I just wanted to amplified my argument at the risk of sounding like a broken record. If you keep the same Top 5, maybe just have a few words about the revisionist wave in the Western genre.

Shoot, it was published before these changes (That was quick!)

I do like your reasoning and agree the color-scheme would have been nice. I hate to give this rationale, but the current top 5 actually maximize the total votes on per-film basis.

Hate to be "that" guy but from a HP standpoint, it would probably catch more people's attention with the most popular films in the Top 5 (God... hate giving that rationale... :P)

And the films you mentioned like Wild Bunch and Liberty Valance are still in Top 10, so it's not like they won't get a ton of the votes.

I had a hunch about this poll, and I'm glad I was right. That's how I stayed in the argument.
To be fair, it was 65% for pure stylish value, if I had made this, without hesitation, I would have put the bright and yellow of Magnificent and the bright blue of Bunch just to counterbalance the "crowded" effect of Leone's posters.
30% was for the iconic value of these movies.
5% because, well, as much as I admire Leone, I thought other directors deserved a little spot.
Congrats and now in a few days, we'll see if my Top 5 was well-thought

What did I say Kyle?  Look at the Top 5 right now. You have exactly the Top 5 I predicted, I'm as much a fan of Leone as you are but 4 movies out of 5 was a bit too much.

Yep, you called it. Too bad, should have listened! The color scheme would have been beautiful as well...

Great picks Stephen.. many of these I'm yet to see. Other than Leone's films, I lack in my Western viewings but these are all supposed to be excellent. Thanks for the vote.

Wow! You're uncle is John Russell? Makes sense given the last name. Does acting run in your family?

Unfortunately, Yellowstone Kelly (1959) was made just before the '60s. However, IMDb poll author Hoekkie made the poll below:

Western Movies of the '50s

You can ask him to re-push this poll and include 'Yellowstone'.
