Live Poll: The Best 2010s Western Movie

As we saddled up for a new decade, we were pleasantly surprised to find ourselves in a time of resurrection of the Western genre. Between Quentin Tarantino cementing his legacy in the genre or other directors remaking classic films, we were given ample opportunities to see what the genre looks like today on the big screen.

Which of these 2010s Western movies will you most likely remember?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls029011542/

Hateful Eight and True Gift are good but I think I will go with Django.

Gotta go with Django as well I think. Great Original Story too.

Funny, violent and interesting as I like.
Tarantino makes violence worth watching

What was so original with Django, Kyle? Tarantino, revenge story, climactic shootout, not saying it was bad but I'll never get through that 'failed hand shake' moment, too contrived to be worthy of QT's talent as a screenwriter. Even True Grit in my opinion was overblown to crazy proportions, for me, it was the Coen brothers killing all the fun from the original and trying to channel Terrence Malick. The film looked terrific but that it is more remembered than Inside Llewyn Davis or A Serious Man is beyond me.

I'd go with The Hateful Eight.

By the way, i'm not sure about The Revenant, if you include neo-Western, having pre-Civil War westerns makes sense (Django is one, too) but the film felt more like a period adventure drama than a real Western, in the "yee-haw" meaning of the term.

I thought it was a fresh take on the Western, revenge story. And The Revenant is a tough one but I'm bending the definition of the genre to include it.

Lone Ranger & True Grit, TG was OK vs John Wayne version.

Great picks, thanks Stephen.

I know the remake was actually really praised but I'm sure it'd be tough to top Wayne and co.

I wonder in which region of the world do Westerns take place. Do they necessarily take place in North America and, if so, at what longitude or vertically running landmark therein does the former "wild west" begin? The Mississippi river? I'm not so sure The Revenant takes place far enough west to be considered a Western. It does take place in what it technically part of the frontier of the time, though. The movie is in a similar boat as Quigley Down Under, it seems.

It's not technically a Western by definition by I've stated how I want to bend the definition a bit based on the lack of true modern Western films being churned out in today's age.

How about "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" so there are two QT and two Coen brothers movies.

You're welcome, it's an anthology Western, maybe you can use it as an introduction...
