Live Poll: Stars!

Intro:

Last time, the focus was on the planets — worlds where size and mass scale in a fairly intuitive way. Now, we turn to the stars, the siblings of our Sun. Stars follow different rules: size does not directly determine mass or density, and even small differences in mass can lead to huge differences in brightness, temperature, and lifespan. For comparison, masses are given in solar masses (the mass of our Sun). The Sun itself is not standing still — it orbits the center of the Milky Way at about 220 km/s (around 137 miles per second). We begin with our own star before looking at others.

Suggestions:

I'm not really over-all happy with the images. If you got better ones, please show them here. Thank you, guys. :D

@rubyfruit76

Thank you very much. Even though I used ChatGPT, it wasn't easy to get this done! It's not only the correct formulation and trivia to search - you got to have a concrete idea of how the poll should look like. That still is a lot of work. Sometimes it's more work than only do it in the pattern: "I make a theme and then look for my favorite characters, Titles, Images." With the help of chatGPT  you begin to overlay and figure out your idea. Is there something missing? Are the facts correct? (Meanwhile I learned For AIs you always have to order correct and unimpeachable facts at first, to prevent it from phantazisingly halucinating.) With the image it's the same as always - you have to search yourself for them.

I think it would be best, if IMDb would install its own AI for image search. That would be very innovative, But even without the image search it still was 3 hours of work to figure out the concept and some points that would make it interesting. The today's AIs are tools, not more. If you use them right and save, nothing will happen. It just boosts creativity and you can learn something with it. Since I use it, my Englisch improved again. This text is written without any AI - and I think it's understandable. Sure not noble English - far from perfect - but suitable for everyday use.

Still at the start there is the idea - a thought that is like a spine. You collect bones of your idea, slowly fill it with flesh and at the top you put a skin texture over it. That texture is the make-up chatGPT does for my raw texts. But without the idea, it still would be nothing.

@Breumaster ,

My vote:

Sirius A

I'm tempted to vote for Polaris. I'm originally from Minnesota.

Polaris:

Distance: About 433 ly.

Zone: Intermediate region (100-1,000 ly).

Type: Yellow Supergiant (F-type).

Mass: About 4.5-5 solar masses.

Radius: About 21,500,000 mi (34,600,000 km).

Surface Temperature: About 10,340 F (5,725 C).

Trivia: Polaris is a triple star system and the closest Cepheid variable star to Earth. It appears stationary because it is aligned with Earth's northern axis, making it a vital tool for navigation. While it is currently the North Star, axial precession will eventually cause another star to take its place.

Via Google Gemini:

The official state star of Minnesota is Polaris, commonly known as the North Star.

Its role as a symbol for the state is quite prominent and is reflected in several official ways:

  • State Motto: The motto L'Étoile du Nord (French for "The Star of the North") was adopted in 1861.

  • State Flag: The newest version of the Minnesota state flag, which became official in May 2024, features an eight-pointed North Star.

  • State Constellation: As of 2025, Ursa Minor (the Little Dipper) is the official state constellation, specifically chosen because it houses Polaris.

While many states have official birds or flowers, Minnesota is unique in how heavily it emphasizes its celestial identity as the "North Star State."

@dan_dassow

Polaris is on the list now. It's #7

The Eurovision Song Contest is happening this weekend. If you want to want to release one or some of the suggestions the time would be now or Saturday. I got a Face-Off, a best winner over all contests and one finalist poll. The finals are on Saturday. So the third list can't be released only after the second semi-final.

Some of the text is a little hard to understand. How many people know what "main sequence" is?

You could spell out light years instead of ly.

@Peter_pbn

That's true. I explained it a little better.

Hopefully it's better now. I've spelled out light-years.
